Veneration
editCould we get a citation on the supposed veneration of Symmachus by the Oriental Orthodox? This sounds like an astounding claim to me, as I would have thought them to probably think of Symmachus as a heretic. Deusveritasest (talk) 01:51, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
Symmachi?
editIs there any relation to the gens Symmachi? I notice that one of its members, the consul Quintus Aurelius Memmius Symmachus, supported the Pope in the controversy. Portrait of Symmachus Church of St. Paul's
editI'm not certain the bit about Laurentius having a portrait instead of Symmachus in the church is true, at least any more. In regards to the source cited on page 115, the author refers to having found the information in "The Laurentian Schism" by Moorhead, with Moorhead citing himself a 1920 article by H. K. Mann. As can be seen here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:51-St.Symmachus.jpg) there appears to be a portrait of Pope Symmachus in the church. For the life of me I can't find a source for when this occurred, but I would imagine that sometime in the intervening 100 years since Mann recorded his observations, the Church has updated its papal portraits.
