Olympics substituting for world championships.

edit

The sentence in the introductory paragraph that reads, "By default, the Games generally substitute for any world championships during the year in which they take place (however, each class usually maintains its own records)" is not clear. While I understand the first part of the sentence, the parenthetical phrase seems disconnected. If someone knows the full intent of this sentence, especially the parenthetical phrase, please clarify. Thank you. OvertAnalyzer (talk) 14:19, 25 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

This source might help to explain it. A world record set at the Olympics is not necessarily comparable with a world record set at the world championships, hence each sports federation records its WRs separately from those set at the Olympics. Maybe the sentence could be changed to: "By default, the Games generally substitute for any world championships during the year in which they take place (however, each sports federation normally maintains its own world records, separate from those set at the Olympics)." The Britannica source (ref.2) doesn't seem to mention this, so should probably be removed. Rodney Baggins .talk. 11:13, 26 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

There reads: "Paavo Nurmi, a Finnish middle-distance and long-distance runner, nicknamed the "Flying Finn" or the "Phantom Finn", set 22 official world records at distances between 1500 m and 20 km, winning nine golds and three silvers in his 12 events at the 1924 Summer Olympics."
'winning nine golds and three silvers in his 12 events at the 1924 Summer Olympics.'? That is not true. He won 9 golds 3 silvers, but at 1924 Olympics 'only' five gold medals (in 5 events). Other 4 gold medals and all silver medals were from 1920 and 1928 Games. ~2025-31851-27 (talk) 14:02, 21 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
