Unbelievably biased lede section

First of all, "while this type of marriage is despised as a kind of prostitution among the public and the new generation, the clergy gather together to encourage and even bless it by using concepts related to marriage" has nothing to do with the actual topic in question. There are no offered statistics or any other methodic measurements of this supposed "despise". And the original source is not saying what the paragraph is saying. Second of all, Khomeini's fatwa is irrelevant. In imami fiqh, any mujtahid can give his opinion on a matter of law. There are hundreds of scholars who disagree with Khomeini on this, so why is he quoted and they are not? You cannot emulate a dead mujtahid, so his view on the matter is completely irrelevant to modern practice. These two sections should be removed from the lede. The Khomeini fatwa can be included elsewhere in the article, but definitely not stated like this in the beginning. It's laughably biased, and the extended protection locks it in without any legitimate consensus. شاه عباس (talk) 18:35, 24 September 2024 (UTC)

All of the problematic sections come from a user named NGC 628 who has been adding biased and borderline Islamophobic contributions endlessly and exclusively since October 2023. The admins are urged to revert those edits immediately, or allow the page to be edited by other members. The section that claims that this sort of marriage is "despised" by modern Iranians, which is an entire paragraph citing only one article, refers to a section within that article which reads "contemptuously dismissed as legalized prostitution ``by the more secular and modernized Iranian middle classes``". It should already be obvious that this sentence within this section in reality has no source. It certainly does not deserve to be in the article, let alone in the lede section.

Regarding Khomeini's fatwa, it has nothing to do with Nikah Mut'a, it has to do with his views on the age of consent and Nikah in general. Unless you want to turn every article regarding Islam into a polemicist debate about age of consent laws, I see no reason whatsoever that this should be included in this page in particular, and not in the lede of every single page about Islamic law and marriage. Questions about source reliability

" Julie Parshall writes that mut'ah is legalised prostitution which has been sanctioned by the Twelver Shia authorities. She quotes the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern Islamic World to differentiate between marriage nikah and mut'ah, and states that while nikah is for procreation, mut'ah is just for sexual gratification. According to Zeyno Baran, this kind of temporary marriage provides Shi'ite men with a religiously sanctioned equivalent to prostitution. According to Elena Andreeva's observation published in 2007, Russian travelers to Iran consider mut'ah to be "legalized profligacy", which is indistinguishable from prostitution"

I would question to relevance of the sources cited in this section, as I would not consider these authors to be authorities on Shiite religious law, or be knowledgable on its effects on the lives of Shia muslims. Philip and Julie Parshall are Christian Missionaries, and this book is a polemical text written explicitly for a Christian audience. Zeyno Baran is a political scientist and books seems to be focused on Islamism as a security treat to Western democracies. Mutah marriages are mentioned in an offhanded manner as an example of the backwardness of fundemantalists. Also whoever cited this book forgot to include the authors qualifier of "often" before the statement. Elena Andreeva's text was in published 2007, however that quote is a citation from two accounts by Russian travels to Persian Empire published in 1901, and 1894 respectively, in a section of the book criticising these crude orientalist portrays of the Iran. Im not sure why the opinions of two Christian living 100 years ago is included in a section titled Religious views - Twelver Shia. It seems somebody is really trying to link mutah marriages to prostitution, as this is mentioned in almost every section of this wikipedia article. Lesanol (talk) 02:37, 17 February 2025 (UTC)

Semi-protected edit request

In the religious views section, under Sunni, please remove the sentence “According to Sunni Arab jurisdiction of Jordan; if the nikah mut'ah meets all other requirements, it is treated as if it were a permanent marriage (i.e. the temporary conditions are invalid and void).” 1. Jordan is not a theocracy, it is a constitutional monarchy and 2. Checked the source and this is not mentioned. 2600:382:2B23:2EFC:D98A:9984:3AD7:4B90 (talk) 05:24, 3 September 2025 (UTC)

Not done for now: It's mentioned briefly on page 52 of the cited source. I have no prejudice against removing it if other editors agree, but I don't see it as overwhelmingly necessary. Seercat3160 (talk) 08:32, 3 September 2025 (UTC)
