Former good article nomineeKathmandu was a Geography and places good articles nominee, but did not meet the good article criteria at the time. There may be suggestions below for improving the article. Once these issues have been addressed, the article can be renominated. Did You Know
A fact from this article appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the "Did you know?" column on January 1, 2010.
The text of the entry was: Did you know ... that Nepal's capital Kathmandu only had one restaurant in 1955?

Should the spelling "Katmandu" be mentioned anywhere?

edit

Although "Kathmandu" seems to be the more common spelling these days (on Google, it outnumbers "Katmandu" about 10-1), "Katmandu" is still seen quite often. I notice that it appears a lot in the references, and seemed to be the more common spelling for the city back in the 1960s-1970s (e.g., when Cat Stevens named his song). Was the English spelling of the city officially changed to "Kathmandu" at some point, or was "Katmandu" always considered incorrect? In any case, I think the spelling "Katmandu" should be noted somewhere in the article (rather than just being a redirect). Ross Finlayson (talk) 21:00, 23 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yes, "Katmandu" was always incorrect. The word "Kathmandu" more correctly represents the way it is pronounced in Nepali, since it correctly has 4 syllables Ka.th.man.du while "Katmandu" has just 3 syllables Kat.man.du. The middle "th" is missing. Manoguru (talk) 16:39, 24 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the clarification. However, given that this misspelling is still fairly common, and is actually used 6 times in the article (3 times in the article body; 3 times in the references), I think it should be noted (as a misspelling) in the "Etymology" section of the article. (With a reference, of course.) Ross Finlayson (talk) 10:58, 25 April 2019 (UTC)Reply
FYI, I just added a note about this. Ross Finlayson (talk) 07:23, 16 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
It's not a misspelling at all, simply a separate (and more correct) transcription (given what th actually means in English). Yes, it should still be mentioned.  LlywelynII 13:01, 22 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Wrong article to ask. Katmandu doesn't have a separate currency anymore.  LlywelynII 13:03, 22 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Regarding Melamchi

edit

Is it neutral to call the Melamchi project 'much plagued'? I don't think it is relevant when talking about potential alleviation of the water resources Poudelp (talk) 23:01, 13 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Religion section

edit

I see that in the this section is only talking about the presence while there should be a pie chart or bar graph of the latest census which can give a some breakdown of the religious demography of Kathmandu 獅眠洞 (talk) 05:35, 23 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
