– I propose that these pages be moved to Jashore and Jashore District respectively. It has been 8 years since the Government of Bangladesh officially changed the English spelling from "Jessore" to "Jashore" (April 2018) to more closely match the Bengali pronunciation. While Wikipedia often waits for "common usage" to catch up with official changes, the 8-year mark represents a significant period where "Jashore" has now become the standard in both local and international contexts. - oppose Although it is good to revisit official names periodically, it was only a couple of months ago that we examined the similar situation of Bogra, and nothing has changed since then. There is nothing magical about the 8 year mark. Guideline Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names) explains in depth how to choose among names, including an entire section on establishing a widely accepted name. Adoption of the official name may have become more uniform within government. Possibly more Bangladeshi newspapers have adopted the new spelling. But:
- Both Banglapedia: The National Encyclopedia of Bangladesh and Encyclopædia Britannica still use Jessore..
- No widely used atlas, gazetteer, or geographical dictionary uses Jashore.
- Some national newspapers use Jessore, some use Jashore.
- Google ngram viewer shows that Jessore is four times more common.
