As far as I can tell, england still operates one prison boat, HMP The Weare, off the coast of Portland in Dorset. Any information on this?

Fair use rationale for Image:HMPS logo.gif

edit

Image:HMPS logo.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 06:32, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Her Majesty vs. HM

edit

Like a similiar debate on the HMRC, shouldn't the Prison Service article be titled HM Prison Service rather than Her Majesty's? Even their logo states HM rather than the full title. It makes sense to do this and maybe define HM in the article itself. It would put it in line with Royal Naval vessels, as they are entered in Wikipedia (quite correctly) as HMS only. shouldn't all these be Her/His majesty's it only makes sense and will future proof the documents --212.69.56.91 (talk) 07:14, 30 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I agree with Xtrememachineuk - it should be referred to as HM Prison Service. This title could be extended to Her Majesty's Prison Service but as with HMRC and HM Treasury, this is not how it is usually referred to. It should certainly not be "His/Her Majesty's" as it is not His Majesty's Prison Service and will not be until the UK has a reigning King. 92.235.145.96 (talk) 13:53, 5 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

The organisation is legally known as Her Majesty's Prison Service (see among others). I have changed the text in the main article to reflect this. It is not Wikipedia's role to rename organisations simply for our own convenience. Thom2002 (talk) 07:04, 8 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Article is dominated by relentless criticism

edit

By my own calculation, the "Criticism" section makes up 58% of the words in the article. Even if the criticism section was actually balanced, this would still be unacceptable. This article needs to provide a broad overview on how English and Welsh prisons are run and it can include as part of that the issues facing them. I'm well aware that riots, overcrowding and underfunding have been an issue in the past year. Any thoughts on how these issues can be better presented? If there's no reply, I will get to work editing. Anywikiuser (talk) 15:04, 31 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

Minister Responsible needs to be updated

edit

The minister responsible is no longer the person specific in the article, as of the recent government reshuffle. 5.151.133.169 (talk) 07:18, 22 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

His Majesty's Prison ServiceHM Prison Service – The name does not meet WP:COMMONNAME or WP:ACRONYMTITLE. The organisation as per their own website states and the logo is HM Prison Service. News organisations call it HN Prison Service . We already have HM Revenue and Customs using the initials, and HM Coastguard has just been moved based on the same argument.
