I recently added information from several Wikipedia articles, such as Porsche Type 12, and cross-referenced them in the article itself. Type 12 is specifically called out in the text of the article and I don't see any harm in cross-referencing a Wikipedia article on it. This edit and several others were reverted by User:Arcrev1 for a lack of reliable sources. This isn't really applicable, as the Type 12 and other cross-references to existing Wikipedia articles are properly sourced. How can we improve this article and make it more readable without running into this kind of problem? 76.91.30.100 (talk) 07:00, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@76.91.30.100: Adding cross-references such as links to Porsche Type 12 is certainly helpful for navigation, but it is important to note that Wikipedia articles themselves cannot serve as sources. Per WP:CIRCULAR, information from one article cannot be cited in another, even if the topic is closely related. Each article must be based on reliable, published sources as outlined in WP:V and WP:RS. Also, there is no separate guideline called "cross-referencing" on Wikipedia. Could you clarify what you mean by that term? Do you mean linking to another article for navigation, or using another article as a source for content? - Arcrev1 (talk) 07:13, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for responding. I understand the issue with circular references. The Porsche Type 12 is based on four external sources that have been deemed to be reliable. We can include those if that supports the addition of some text and an image from that article to Ferdinand Porsche. That said, it looks like in addition to removing the text that I've added from Porsche Type 12 you also removed the link to the Porsche Type 12 article itself. The only possible factual dispute here is that Ferdinand Porsche mentioned "Type 12" whereas the article name is Porsche Type 12. They both clearly address the same vehicle. 76.91.30.100 (talk) 07:22, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
@76.91.30.100: Thank you for clarifying. I will restore your edits, as it appears that several constructive changes were included in the reversion. That said, please note that any information copied from other Wikipedia articles without an inline citation in this article cannot be retained. Per policy, all content must be directly supported by reliable sources cited here, rather than relying on another Wikipedia article. - Arcrev1 (talk) 07:30, 6 September 2025 (UTC)Reply
