Structure

edit

@Fausto2006, Mat Seli, Cipher77, Alumifacts, and GEMA1Aanya:

  • while too soon to add to the draft page, consider openning a Talk page section identifying the relevant categories to add to the page. See Help:Category and use on similar pages
  • while too soon to add to a draft page, you may wish to open a talk page section to identify and discuss potential links in to this page from existing pages ('reciprocal linking'. Note all links out will be suitable for a return link in to this page, but some will be. See Help:Link. This includes considering additions to existing list pages. See Lists_of_dystopian_works
  • needs correctly formatted and relevant External links section. See Wikipedia:External links
  • needs correctly formatted and relevant See Also section . See Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Layout#"See_also"_section
  • Examples of dystopian films section needs breadth and balance. There is an overly long section on Blade Runner, then the briefest of text on just 2 other films, without even the relevant internal links for them
  • consider a higher-level synthesis from multiple sources rather than deep and lengthy content from a single source
  • the Examples section needs to avoid simply duplicating List of dystopian films. Consider structuring this section with examples by sub-genre
  • you may wish to include a brief section on notable directors of this genre

- I've taken up your suggestion on notable director and created the table for significant directors
- We've discussed issue on this page being too dense, I will be cutting and editing to fit the usual wikipedia style Fausto2006 (talk) 14:33, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

References

edit

@Fausto2006, Mat Seli, Cipher77, Alumifacts, and GEMA1Aanya:

  • ref. 2 needs a date accessed
  • always add references for all content e.g. 3 subsections with no sources. All content needs objective content and clear, authoratative sources
  • avoid large sections of text from a. single source e.g.Characteristics of Dystopian Films

@Fausto2006, Mat Seli, Cipher77, Alumifacts, and GEMA1Aanya:

  • incoreect grammar in refs. 3, 6, 7, 8. Ref. 8 alone has 5 grammar errors

Limelightangel (talk) 07:18, 20 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

I have made the corrections for the section of the "Characteristics of Dystopian films". However, I believe that one of my references has an error I will look into that in the following days and correct it. GEMA1Aanya (talk) 13:31, 25 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Fausto2006, Mat Seli, Cipher77, Alumifacts, and GEMA1Aanya:

  • some sections have no or only one source e.g. Corporate contol; Inequitable Social Order; etc.
  • avoid large sections of text from a single source

Images & Content development

edit

@Fausto2006, Mat Seli, Cipher77, Alumifacts, and GEMA1Aanya:

  • the flat text needs developing in to an engaging digital format. Elements to consider include: an effective infobox, images, tables, lists, maps, quotations, 4 types of linking (external links, internal links, references & see also's), etc.
  • there may be existing relevant images already on WikiMedia

Content relevance

edit

@Fausto2006, Mat Seli, Cipher77, Alumifacts, and GEMA1Aanya:

  • much of the content in Characteristics seems to relate to dystopian settings rather that specifically to film, and comes from a single, low-quality source
  • look at similar pages on other types of film genres

Limelightangel (talk) 13:59, 14 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

I have related the characteristics with examples so that the content is related to the topic GEMA1Aanya (talk) 13:32, 25 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

@Fausto2006, Mat Seli, Cipher77, Alumifacts, and GEMA1Aanya:

  • some of the long section on Blade Runner is not relevant to this page topic. There is already a page on this film.
  • this page needs to include examples of dystopian films, and content related to what makes them this genre - but not duplicate other information included on other pages
  • internal linking needs to connect content here with relevant pages

Limelightangel (talk) 07:23, 20 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

  • Black Mirror is a TV series. It could be clearer what the definition of the page topic is, and whether it will include TV series. If so, this may be a useful sub-section or theme.

Grammar & style

edit

@Fausto2006, Mat Seli, Cipher77, Alumifacts, and GEMA1Aanya:

  • note and apply guidelines on text format, particularly related to bold, italic, etc. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Text formatting and other pages
  • incorrect use of bold, missing internal links, missing italics, etc.

@Fausto2006, Mat Seli, Cipher77, Alumifacts, and GEMA1Aanya:

  • See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Words to watch - avoid redundant, biased, repetitive and/or subjective vocabulary. Some examples: tend to, mainly (c. 4 times), usually (twice), for instance (c.4 times), firmly positions itself, In this way, not just as, but as sharp, firmly positions itself, frequently pushes the limits, a sophisticated take on, since it both,On top of that, overall, isn’t just a , urgent concerns , we’d like to think, profoundly influence , its imagery and narrative encouraging resistance; etc.
  • be consistent in text formatting. If the standard is for film names in italic, use this consistently across the page, including in internal links e.g. Brazil vs. The Matrix. You can use a Help:Piped link for links to film pages not in italics e.g. to create Brazil in italic on the draft page
  • use italic and bold consistently and correctly e.g. not Lord & Miller, 2014; not ridged social hierarchy; Blade Runner vs. Blade Runner; etc.
  • incorrect director name format: (Scott,1982)
  • grammar: 'For instance The movies'; 'rather than biology-serves '; etc.

Addition of a new section

edit

Good evening all @Fausto2006@GEMA1Aanya@Mat Seli@Cipher77@Limelightangel

I just wanted to share that I’ll be adding a new section to Wikipedia titled “Dystopian Fiction vs. Films.” This section will explore how dystopian narratives differ in literature and their film adaptations, highlighting key themes, tones, and interpretations. I look forward to any feedback or insights you may have once it’s published. Alumifacts (talk) 22:41, 1 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Yes perfect, similarly I will be working on the Effects of Dystopian films and Utopia Vs Dystopia in the upcoming week. GEMA1Aanya (talk) 15:08, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Great! will be looking forward to it. Alumifacts (talk) 15:40, 2 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hey @Alumifacts, I’ve been looking over your section, and I noticed that it could benefit from a few more academic sources to strengthen the points and make it more reliable, especially for a Wikipedia-style entry. I’d be happy to help you find some peer-reviewed articles and references to support your sentences so it aligns with what we’re aiming for. We can work together to make it both accurate and well-sourced. Mat Seli (talk) 03:43, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thank you so much @Alumifacts GEMA1Aanya (talk) 15:04, 9 November 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi @GEMA1Aanya, thanks for adding the new Effects of Dystopian Film section and the accompanying image. The structure is clear and the topics you cover which are the psychological effects, political attitudes, and economic critique fit well with the overall page. I think the section will integrate nicely once the full article is finalised.
One suggestion for improvement would be to add a few more academic sources in areas where the claims are broad or theoretical, just so the section aligns with Wikipedia’s verifiability standards. I will help you to find citations to support some of the stronger claims, especially in the “Economic Attitude and Critique” part.
Overall, great work. Let me know if you’d like help locating more references or refining any parts of the section! Mat Seli (talk) 04:45, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

New Section and Sub Topic Added

edit

Hello everyone, @Alumifacts, @Fausto2006, @Cipher77, @Mat Seli and @Limelightangel. I have added a new topic "Dystopia Vs Utopia" and a Sub Section or topic under the main topic "Effects of Dystopian Film" called "Economic Attitude and Critique". Please feel free to give me some feedback on it. GEMA1Aanya (talk) 15:13, 9 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi @GEMA1Aanya, thanks for adding the new section. It's clear you put a lot of work into outlining the relationship between utopia and dystopia. I think the content is well-structured, but I do have a few suggestions to help it better fit Wikipedia’s style and the scope of our article.
Right now the section reads more like a general theoretical overview of utopian and dystopian concepts, whereas our page focuses specifically on dystopian film. It might help to narrow the content so that it connects more directly to cinematic contexts or film scholarship. Some sentences also take on an explanatory or essay-like tone, so adjusting the wording to a more neutral, descriptive style would improve alignment with Wikipedia guidelines.
Additionally, several claims would benefit from citations to reliable academic sources. If you’d like, I’m happy to help locate suitable references from film studies, speculative fiction scholarship, or cultural theory so the section meets verifiability standards.
Let me know if you’d like assistance with sourcing or with refining the wording. Happy to collaborate further! Mat Seli (talk) 03:52, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Draft Review 14/11/25

edit

@Fausto2006, Mat Seli, Cipher77, Alumifacts, and GEMA1Aanya:

Lots of content and good sources. Some repetitive issues, documented in the Talk above:

  • style: the article is written like an essay rather than an encylopaedic article. This includes issues with vocabulary and sections. See NPOV
  • text format - see above: be consistent and correct in text formatting, including use of bold and italics and consistent grammar e.g. Blade Runner vs. Blade runner, etc. Consistently use italics for film names.
  • vocabulary - repetitive and extensive issues which compound the essay-like and subjective tone (see above). Avoid subjective, redundant or unnecessary vocabulary - See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Words to watch e.g. the perfect setting, While less directly studied than, can potentially raise awareness, firmly positions itself, frequently pushes the limits , Overall, Blade Runner isn’t just a sci-fi spectacle, it raises urgent concerns, a future that might be closer than we’d like to think, a deeply dystopian, Ultimately, uses its high concept premise not just for spectacle but to probe, raises the haunting question: “if the ‘world’ you experience is crafted for you, how do you know it’s truly real?” , Moreover, most startling revelation, In short (twice) , Overall,, Furthermore, vividly articulates, What remains hidden at first glance, functions as a concealed text:, On one hand, On the other hand, Thus, So there is the question of what is lost and what is gained , profoundly influence, South Korean entries, deeply shaped, is inseparable from , serve as powerful, etc. As an indicative edit, I have changed 'would define the genre' to 'which were subsequently incorporated in the film genre'.
  • Talk guidelines: don't use Talk pages to simply document edits, which are recorded in the page history
  • images: consider sourcing more acceptable and relevant images e.g. for V for Vendetta protesters for the final section, etc.
  • image captions:
    • Develop consistency, clarity and topic relevance. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Captions
    • 'A dystopian world where technology takes control' better as 'The dystopian 'cyber-punk' city portrayed in Ridley Scott's 1982 film Blade Runner '; Publicity poster for Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis';
    • correct grammar e.g. 'bullet-dodging scene',
  • structure: list examples chronologically.
  • references:
    • remove inconsistent formatting e.g. UPPER CASE ref. 34, 39, 83, 59
    • ref. 19 & 55 may be available online - add the link and date accessed
    • books missing ISBN e.g. ref. 19, 15, 26, 28etc.
    • check link ref. 52
    • ref. 48 missing issue number
    • missing website name ref. 86 (The Prolongation of Work)
    • you do not reference Wikipedia e.g. ref. 37
  • lead section: see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section and similar pages e.g. Horror_film
  • consistency/relevance: unlike preceding sub-sections, there are no sourced examples for the sub-section Rebellion and Resistance. These could also be developed with sources in the earlier sub-sections and. Similary, large, subjective and essay-like sections could include sourced, relevant examples of dyspoian fils e.g. Dystopian fiction vs film mentions no explici examples;Dystopia Vs Utopia doesn't mention the genre at all. For an example, see Horror film, etc.
  • note and consider the use of the Speculative fiction sidebar - see use on Horror Film. See template:Speculative_fiction_sidebar
    • internal linking:
  • duplicate links e.g. Brazil, Matrix, Blade Runner, etc. You link out once, where the linked text is first used.
  • missing intenal links e.g. Jean Baudrillard, hyperreality, etc.
  • needs an Wikipedia:External links section. Understand the purpose and conventions for this section and look at similar pages
  • needs a See Also's section. Understand the purpose and conventions for this section and look at similar pages. See Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Layout#"See_also"_section
  • note earlier feedback and help links on using Talk page to prepare Categories and potential relevant links in to add if the page is accepted. Don't add them until after the review process
  • remove all ';' from subsection headers
  • note guidelines on use of quotations. See Help:quotations
  • the section Dystopia Vs Utopia lacks explicit relevance to the page topic, belongs on other existing pages and does not mention film once

Regional Dystopian Films Section Added

edit

Hi everyone, @Fausto2006, @Cipher77, @Alumifacts, and @GEMA1Aanya, I’ve now completed the full draft for the Regional Dystopian Films section, including Asia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and North America. All subsections have been sourced with academic references and formatted to fit the style of the main page. Please feel free to review and let me know if there’s anything you think should be adjusted or expanded. I’m happy to make any revisions if needed. Mat Seli (talk) 04:37, 17 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Proposed edit: “Hidden features of dystopian in Metropolis” subsection

edit

Hi everyone, @Fausto2006, @Cipher77, @Alumifacts, and @GEMA1Aanya I’d like to propose removing or trimming the subsection titled “Hidden features of dystopian in Metropolis.” While the points raised are interesting and well-intentioned, the subsection currently reads as interpretive analysis rather than an encyclopedic summary. Several phrases (e.g., “hidden features,” “quietly critique,” “powerful metaphor,” “most startling revelation”) present original synthesis and unattributed interpretation, which may conflict with Wikipedia’s policies on No Original Research (WP:NOR) and Neutral Point of View (WP:NPOV). To address this, I suggest either: removing the subsection entirely, or merging one or two clearly sourced statements into the main Metropolis paragraph, rewritten with explicit attribution (e.g., “scholars have interpreted…”). I’m happy to help with a neutral, policy-compliant rewrite if others agree. Feedback is welcome. Mat Seli (talk) 17:55, 15 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

I have also removed the Inequitable Social Order subsection under the Characteristics of Dystopian Films section because there is no source to make it verifiable, but you can add it back later if you can find reliable sources to verify it. Mat Seli (talk) 23:51, 16 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Comments left by AfC reviewers

edit
  • Comment: While it is clear you have put tremendous effort into this draft and the subject is clearly notable enough for a Wikipedia article, it still reads like an essay. Wikipedia articles do not compare two different topics, such as you have done in the "Dystopian fiction vs film" and "Dystopia Vs Utopia" sections. Additionally, you seem to be drawing conclusions not explicitly stated in the sources, such as you did in the lead sentence in the "Effects of Dystopian Films" section: Dystopian films have been associated with influencing a range of social conditions..
    What I've pointed out need to be removed or significantly changed so the draft no longer reads like an essay. 🌀Hurricane Wind and Fire (talk) (contribs)🔥 05:14, 26 December 2025 (UTC)Reply
