Manor House

edit

The author has used this term x3; I'm uncomfortable about this.

It sits awkwardly with me as I don't think I've ever known this building being referred to historically as a manor: "The term is today loosely (though erroneously) applied to various English country houses, mostly at the smaller end of the spectrum".

It was known - perhaps briefly - as Mansfield Manor Hotel, as a trading name until around 2022. Prior it was known as Portland Hall Hotel for a time.

I shall not be able to get back to this quickly, so I'll leave it for now.-- 82.13.47.210 (talk) 03:32, 3 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

After being used as council offices (with the replacement being opened in 1986), the main building has been used as a hotel and restaurant with various successive names. Following is a rough time-line with reasonably reliable sources. Other search results are unacceptable, being listings in trade directories and third-party reviews.
  • 31 December 1989 - opened as Carr Bank Manor Hotel[1]
  • January 1992 - sold and renamed Manor Hotel[2]
  • Operated as Portland Hall Hotel 2004(?) to August 2010[3][4]
  • 2011 renamed as Mansfield Manor Hotel[5][6][7][8]
A commons category was created in 2017 (Category:Carr Bank Manor).
As there is no consistent or historic rationale for using the word Manor, I have changed the descriptions to read as Carr Bank mansion; it is described at Listed buildings in Mansfield (outer areas) and by Historic England as a country house. I have also included an external link to an Ordnance Survey map showing the building name as Carrbank.--82.13.47.210 (talk) 00:59, 7 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
