When will the United Kingdom hand the Chagos Archipelago back to Mauritius?

edit

When will the United Kingdom hand the Chagos Archipelago back to Mauritius? I can't find any definite answers on the Internet. 2001:8003:9078:2401:1B5:FC5D:DB31:242E (talk) 06:22, 2 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

At the end of May the House of Commons Library published a briefing saying "The government expects the treaty to come into effect in around six months, after Mauritius has completed its internal processes." https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/cbp-10273/ (under the section "What parliamentary scrutiny will there be?") — LittleDwangs (talk) 16:44, 2 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Area numbers confusion

edit

The info box says that the total area is 54 km2, and 99.89% of that is water, leaving mere 60km2 of land. Either I don't understand how to read these numbers, or then one or two of the numbers is wrong or missing some trailing zeroes maybe? 2001:14BB:C6:AB2A:5901:36A1:B119:73C0 (talk) 19:03, 14 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Total area is wrong, the water area likely includes the entire EEZ. CMD (talk) 23:52, 14 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

HoC ratified the agreement

edit

9th september 2025 the House of Commons ratified the agreement. Does it mean that the agreement went into effect? 176.104.177.72 (talk) 07:48, 13 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

Mauritius also needs to complete its own internal processes to ratify the treaty. A Foreign Office director from the UK is expected in Mauritius from 29 September to 1 October to finalise technical aspects of the process. Dasomm (talk) 09:54, 14 September 2025 (UTC)Reply

“Permanent Residents”

edit

The infobox calls the four Chagossians who recently returned to the islands “permanent residents,” although they are technically not lawful residents as they are without permits and only government personnel are legally allowed. According to law, no one has the right of abode. GN22 (talk) 02:52, 21 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Right of abode has now been granted as of 30th March by the BIOT Supreme Court, for all intents and purposes the now six Chagossians living on Ile Du Coin are legally permanent civilian residents. Aec1383 (talk) 23:10, 1 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
And the BIOT administration has appealed it. It is legally challenged. GN22 (talk) 23:13, 1 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
