Elon Perry
editFollowing the Jewish Chronicle's statement and removal of Elon Perry's articles from its website I've deleted the citation to "The full inside story of how Israel assassinated Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran – minute by minute" under the Elon Perry byline. I'm including the citation's archive URL https://web.archive.org/web/20240806164802/https://www.thejc.com/news/israel/the-full-inside-story-of-how-israel-assassinated-ismail-haniyeh-in-tehran-minute-by-minute-o5isxkcq here since it includes details, eg. the explosive device being placed the day of the assassination, which may turn out to be true. Error in Linking to James Jeffrey
editThe link for 'James Jeffrey' near reference [160] appears to be broken. It goes to the disambiuation for 'James Franklin' and instead should go to the page for James Franklin Jeffrey: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Franklin_Jeffrey 198.232.211.130 (talk) 19:39, 30 September 2024 (UTC)

Assassination of Ismail Haniyeh → Killing of Ismail Haniyeh – "Assassination" implies that the killing was unlawful. We're talking about the killing of a leader of a terrorist band during a military conflict, so whether this was legal or not is quite a complex question. "Killing", on the other hand, has no implications. Compare with the article Killing of Osama bin Laden and the discussions on Fuad Shukr and 2024 Hezbollah headquarters strike. Cambalachero (talk) 18:29, 20 February 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose. The word assassination may imply that the killing was extralegal, but that doesn't mean it was illegitimate. Other examples: Most people would probably agree that Reinhard Heydrich and Adolf Hitler were in many ways more deserving of death than Haniyeh, and yet we have articles called Assassination of Reinhard Heydrich and Assassination attempts on Adolf Hitler. We also have Category:Assassinated Nazis. Regarding bin Laden: It's likely that the objective of the operation was to kill him, but we can't be sure, and several officials denied it. That's probably another reason why the article isn't named Assassination of Osama bin Laden (there's a redirect though). P.S.: Very similar discussion, result was "Assassination": Talk:Assassination of Qasem Soleimani#Change article name to "Killing of Qasem Soleimani". — Chrisahn (talk) 20:19, 20 February 2025 (UTC)
- At no point I said anything about legitimacy, as in practice that will be based on the acceptance or rejection of the public figure rather than the way he died, and so useless as a metric. Neither the killing of Heydrich or the attempted ones at Hitler were proper military operations, so they are in execution more similar to the Assassination of John F. Kennedy. As for Soleimani, that was a malformed move request that was open for almost a year, and was closed because of that. Cambalachero (talk) 14:43, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
- You're grasping at straws. 1. You said "unlawful", I used the words "extralegal" and "illegitimate". Closely related terms. 2. "proper military operations" – The killing of Heydrich was planned and executed by intelligence service and military officers. Similar to the Haniyeh operation in many ways. 3. "malformed move request ... was closed because of that" – That was one of the reasons given, but not the only one. Many people treated it like an RM, and the arguments also apply to your request. — Chrisahn (talk) 17:14, 21 February 2025 (UTC)

- Oppose: "Assassination" commonly refers to the deliberate killing of a prominent person, especially a political leader, by a sudden or secret attack for political reasons. This is exactly what happened with Haniyeh — Chairman of Hamas's Political Bureau, killed by a smuggled explosive device attack orchestrated by Israel to weaken Hamas. Furthermore, the vast majority of RS describe the event as an assassination, including The New York Times, CNN, ABC, and Al Jazeera, as well as Israeli media outlets such as The Times of Israel and The Jerusalem Post. Skitash (talk) 20:48, 21 February 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose per above. Jeffrey34555 (talk) 06:34, 22 February 2025 (UTC)
- Oppose: Per our article,
Assassination is the willful killing, by a sudden, secret, or planned attack, of a person—especially if prominent or important.
This applies here, and RS have been describing it as an assassination. MT(710) 15:16, 23 February 2025 (UTC)
