The Surrey Portal
Surrey (/ˈsʌri/ SUH-ree) is a ceremonial county in South East England. It is bordered by Greater London to the northeast, Kent to the east, East and West Sussex to the south, and Hampshire and Berkshire to the west. The largest settlement is Woking.
The county has an area of 1,663 km2 (642 square miles) and had an estimated population of 1,248,649 in 2024. The north of the county, which includes the towns of Staines-upon-Thames and Epsom, is densely populated and forms part of the Greater London conurbation. A second conurbation along the western border of the county includes Camberley and Farnham and extends into Hampshire and Berkshire. Woking is located in the north-west, and Guildford in the centre-west. The south of the county is rural, and its largest settlements are Horley in the south-east and Godalming in the south-west. For local government purposes Surrey is a non-metropolitan county with eleven districts. The county historically included much of south-west Greater London but did not include what is now the borough of Spelthorne, which was part of Middlesex. It is one of the home counties.
The defining geographical feature of the county is the North Downs, a chalk escarpment which runs from the south-west to north-east and divides the densely populated north from the more rural south; it is pierced by the rivers Wey and Mole, both tributaries of the Thames. The north of the county is a lowland, part of the Thames basin. The south-east is part of the Weald, and the south-west contains the Surrey Hills and Thursley, Hankley and Frensham Commons, an extensive area of heath. Stane Street is the modern name of the 91 km-long (57 mi) Roman road in southern England that linked Londinium (London) to Noviomagus Reginorum (Chichester). The exact date of construction is uncertain; however, on the basis of archaeological artefacts discovered along the route, it was in use by 70 AD and may have been built in the first decade of the Roman occupation of Britain (as early as 43–53 AD).
Stane Street shows clearly the engineering principles that the Romans used when building roads. A straight-line alignment from London Bridge to Chichester would have required steep crossings of the North Downs, Greensand Ridge and South Downs. The road was therefore designed to exploit a natural gap in the North Downs cut by the River Mole and to pass to the east of the high ground of Leith Hill, before following flatter land in the River Arun valley to Pulborough. The direct survey line was followed only for the northernmost 20 km (12 mi) from London to Ewell. At no point does the road lie more than 10 km (6 mi) from the direct line from London Bridge to Chichester.
Today the Roman road is easily traceable on modern maps. Much of the route is followed by the A3, A24, A29 and A285, although most of the course through the modern county of Surrey has either been completely abandoned or is followed only by bridlepaths. Earthworks associated with the road are visible in many places where the course is not overlain by modern roads. Andrew Russell Garfield (born 20 August 1983) is an English and American actor. He is known for his work in a variety of genres, from superhero to musicals in independent films. His accolades include a Tony Award, a British Academy Television Award, and a Golden Globe Award, in addition to nominations for two Academy Awards, three British Academy Film Awards, a Laurence Olivier Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award. Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2022.
Garfield began his acting career on West End stage and British television. His breakout roles came as a juvenile convict in the television film Boy A (2007) and later as Eduardo Saverin in David Fincher's The Social Network (2010). Garfield achieved wider recognition for starring as the title character in Marc Webb's Spider-Man films (2012–2014) and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
Garfield received Academy Award nominations for Best Actor his performances as Desmond Doss in the war film Hacksaw Ridge (2016) and Jonathan Larson in the musical drama Tick, Tick... Boom! (2021). His other film credits include Never Let Me Go (2010), Silence (2016), Under the Silver Lake (2018), The Eyes of Tammy Faye (2021) and We Live in Time (2024). On television, he starred in the crime drama miniseries Under the Banner of Heaven (2022), which earned him a nomination for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series.
On stage, Garfield made his Broadway debut as Biff Loman in the revival of Death of a Salesman (2012), which earned him a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play. For his performance as Prior Walter in the West End and Broadway revivals of Angels in America, he received a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor and later won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play.
