National Designer Award

National Designer Awards (NDA) is an annual fashion awards ceremony held in India. Organized by the World Designing Forum (WDF), the program is an event for fashion designers representing different states and regional areas. The event follows a format that includes state-level selections and regional exhibitions, leading to a national grand finale.[1][2] Media coverage has documented the inclusion of traditional Indian fabrics, such as Kashmiri Pashmina and Kanjeevaram silk, within the exhibition entries.[3]

History and Objectives

edit

Established in 2018, the National Designer Awards functions as an event where participants exhibit fashion collections that incorporate traditional Indian textiles. The stated objectives of the organizers include the development of Indian handlooms and coordination with state-level design competitions alongside the "Vocal for Local" campaign.[4][5][6]

Season 6 was held in New Delhi in 2023, followed by the 2024 edition in Goa. These iterations involved designers from over 20 Indian states and featured regional materials, including Banarasi silk, Pashmina, and Kanchipuram silk.[7][8] Media reports from the 2024 session outlined discussions regarding the structural expansion of the handloom sector.[9]

Format

edit

The program utilizes a multi-tier structure where designers are selected via initial screenings conducted at the state level. Following selection, participants coordinate with regional textile clusters to manufacture the clothing lines presented during the national finale stage.

The 2024 finale was organized in Goa and hosted by presenter Ankit Batla. The event presented work from approximately 300 designers and included panels on integrating local textile artisans into international supply chains.[10] Fashion designers Neeta Lulla and Anamika Khanna have been associated with the event as mentors or recipients.[11]
