editDarian Duan[3],’s practice is rooted in traditional Chinese ink painting, calligraphy, and porcelain painting. He is known for developing a multi-stage ceramic painting process that integrates chance-based material effects with deliberate painterly and carving interventions.
His working method typically begins with splashing and pouring pigment onto porcelain surfaces, allowing natural flows and material reactions to form an initial image. He then paints directly onto this surface, responding to the emergent forms. In the final stage, Duan employs knife drawing and carving into the painted surface. After firing, these layered actions—pouring, painting, and incision—are permanently fused into the porcelain body.
His work explores the interaction between material process, gesture, and transformation, combining elements of traditional Chinese visual language with contemporary ceramic practices.
Artistic Style
editDarian’s early artistic practice focused primarily on porcelain painting and ink painting, later gradually shifting toward oil painting.
