He holds dual Finnish and Spanish nationality. His mother is Finnish and his father is Spanish, with roots in Granada, Spain — where Abaijón was raised after his birth in Finland. He is best known as the keyboard player and co-founding member of the Finnish ska and rocksteady band The Valkyrians, and as the creator of the solo project MOONHEAD. He is also a licensed competitive table tennis player.

Early life

edit

Abaijón was born on 31 October 1972 in Hämeenlinna, Finland. Shortly after his birth, his family relocated to Granada, Spain, where he grew up and developed his formative musical interests. His influences include psychedelic rock, new wave, krautrock, noise rock, post-punk, ska, reggae, and 1960s Jamaican music. He later returned to Finland and settled in Helsinki, where he became active in the city's independent music scene.

Career

edit

Jack Meatbeat & The Underground Society (1996–1999)

edit

Abaijón's first documented recording work was with Jack Meatbeat & The Underground Society, a psychedelic rock project whose debut album, Back From World War III, was released in 1999 on Munster Records, the prestigious Spanish independent label based in Madrid. Basic tracks were recorded at IM Eimer in Berlin, with overdubs recorded in Helsinki, Buenos Aires, and at Granada Sound Studios in Helsinki between 1996 and 1999. Abaijón served as editor of the album and co-wrote the closing track, Granada Smokin' Gipsy. The album was released as a standard black vinyl edition, a limited red vinyl pressing, and on CD (Munster Records, MRCD 173/200).

The Valkyrians (2002–present)

edit

In 2002, Abaijón co-founded The Valkyrians in Helsinki, a ska and rocksteady band in which he performs as keyboardist and backing vocalist under the stage name Mr. Moonhead. In a 2023 interview with Soundi magazine, vocalist Jussi "Angster" Eronen recalled that early rehearsals without Abaijón felt incomplete: the band only truly found its direction once he joined.

The band released their debut EP, Miracle, in 2004 on Semi Sounds/Fat Belt Records. Their debut album, High and Mighty (2006), reached number 24 on the Finnish national album chart, and the single "Rankin' Fullstop" peaked at number 6 on the Finnish singles chart. Soundi magazine named their 2022 album Monsterpiece one of the best albums of that year. As of 2023, Abaijón and vocalist Jussi "Angster" Eronen are the only two remaining original founding members of the band. The Valkyrians have toured in more than twenty countries, with particularly strong followings in Germany and Spain, and have received recognition from US ska acts including The Aggrolites and The Slackers.

He is credited on recordings under the alias El Selenita and also co-engineered the band's debut album. In 2010 the band was included in Bear Family Records' 35th Anniversary Box Set. Their debut album, Hypnosis — blending surf, garage rock, lounge, and instrumental styles — was released in 2012 on Gas Records (an instrumental subsidiary of Goofin' Records), produced by Pekka Laine and mixed by Janne Haavisto of Laika & The Cosmonauts.

Both The Mike Bell Cartel and The Atomic Blast dissolved following the sudden death of Miikka Siira on 23 September 2024, at the age of 45. His passing was reported by Helsingin Sanomat and widely mourned across the Finnish music community.
