Draft:Ron and Aussie Productions

Ron and Aussie Productions is a Canadian independent film and television production company based in Toronto, Ontario. Founded by filmmakers Ron Dias (filmmaker) and Joanne Jansen, the company is known for producing character-driven films that focus on underrepresented communities, particularly stories rooted in Toronto neighbourhoods such as Scarborough.

The company gained national and international attention for its feature films Bite of a Mango (2023) and Morningside (2024), both of which premiered at major film festivals and secured distribution through U.S. and Canadian broadcasters.[1][2]

History

edit

Ron and Aussie Productions was founded by Ron Dias and Joanne Jansen as a creative partnership focused on developing independent films outside of the traditional Canadian studio system. The company emerged from the duo’s background in grassroots filmmaking and community-based storytelling.

The company’s early breakthrough came with Bite of a Mango, which premiered at the American Black Film Festival and was later acquired by AMC Networks’ streaming service ALLBLK.[3] The film’s success helped establish Ron and Aussie Productions as a notable voice in Black Canadian independent cinema.

In 2024, the company released Morningside, a dramatic ensemble film set in Scarborough, Ontario. Despite losing its distributor shortly before production, the film was completed through a combination of private financing, community support, and backing from ALLBLK and Hollywood Suite.[4] Morningside went on to become one of the highest-grossing Canadian independently produced theatrical releases of its run in early 2025, according to *The Canadian Press*.[4]

The challenges faced during the release of Morningside later contributed to the founding of Big Picture, a filmmaker-led Canadian distribution and marketing company co-founded by Dias and Jansen.
