LS Retail is a Point of Sale (POS) and operations platform provider headquartered in Kópavogur, Iceland with additional offices in Atlanta, Georgia (USA); Dubai, UAE; Porto, Portugal; and Selangor, Malaysia. It was acquired by the Nordic private equity firm Axcel in December 2025.[1][2] LS Retail software is developed for businesses across the retail, F&B, hotel, pharmacy, and forecourt industries. The company reports that its software is used in over 157 countries globally as of 2026.[3]

History

edit

1986 – The origins of LS Retail trace back to 1986, when the IT firm Strengur began localizing and developing the Danish Navigator software for the Icelandic market. Navigator later evolved into Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.[5]

2003 – The companies Strengur and Landsteinar merged, forming Landsteinar Strengur ehf. and launching the LS Retail brand.[6]

2009Microsoft acquisition: Microsoft acquired the rights to the LS Retail AX software in 2009, adding it to its portfolio as a retail software that could be added onto Microsoft Dynamics AX.[7]

December 2018  – Decline in financial performance: In 2017, LS Retail was Iceland's second-largest software company, and reported a loss of ISK 126 million, following a profit of ISK 265 million in 2016. This trend was consistent with a broader decline in profits among Icelandic software firms.[8]

January 2021 – Acquisition by Aptos retail: In 2021, LS Retail was acquired by Aptos Retail, a U.S.-based company and subsidiary of Goldman Sachs.

December 2025 – LS Retail's profit doubled between 2024-2025 in the amount of 1.2 billion Icelandic króna with a total revenue of 11.7 billion Icelandic króna.[9] Acquisition by Axcel, a private equity fund based in Denmark.
