I would like to extend my best wishes to all, even the haters and losers, on this special date, September 11th.

Haters and losers is a term used by Donald Trump, originating from a viral tweet pre-dating his first term as President of the United States. Trump has since used variations of the phrase hundreds of times, including throughout both terms of his presidency.[2]
On the morning of the 12th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Trump tweeted "I would like to extend my best wishes to all, even the haters and losers, on this special date, September 11th."[2] He deleted the tweet two years later, however a retweeted version — also on Trump's official account — still exists.[3]
Initial tweet and response
editThe tweet attracted significant attention at the time in both the media and from the public, however it received significant attention during the 2016 Republican Party presidential primaries.[4] Comedian Trevor Noah described the tweet as "the world's most confusing Hallmark card" and ridiculed Trump's reaction to 9/11 as "totally weird" during a taping of The Daily Show.[5]
During the primaries when the tweet resurfaced again, Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks told Politico that “(t)he tweet is from several years ago” and refused to offer further explanation.[3]
Origin
editThe phrase was technically first used on February 13, 2013 when Trump wrote "It’s okay but why do the haters (& losers) want to follow me on twitter?? Get a life!"[6] That same day, he tweeted "If I’m the third most envied man in America, the small group of haters and losers must be nauseas" (sic) in reference to an episode of Family Feud where Trump was the 3rd most common audience answer for 'most envied man in America'.[6]
Other usage

During presidency

edit| Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) tweeted: |
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE, INCLUDING THE HATERS AND THE FAKE NEWS MEDIA! 2019 WILL BE A FANTASTIC YEAR FOR THOSE NOT SUFFERING FROM TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME. JUST CALM DOWN AND ENJOY THE RIDE, GREAT THINGS ARE HAPPENING FOR OUR COUNTRY!
January 2, 2019, 12:08 a.m.[10]
Trump's usage of the phrase notably decreased after he won the 2016 Republican primary, likely in an attempt to soften his image to voters.[11]
On New Year's Day in 2019, Trump posted an all-caps tweet featuring a variation of the phrase, wishing "everyone" a Happy New Year — "including the haters and the fake news media."[11]
Second term
editTrump has used the phrase with increased frequency in his second term, often on Truth Social .[12]
Prior to Marine Le Pen's trial in March 2025, the president made a Truth Social post defended the French politician, where he included a variation of the original phrase, "a group of Lunatics and Losers".[12]
On May 11, 2025, while criticizing ABC News reporter Martha Raddatz for saying that Pope Leo XIV's selection "had nothing to do with Donald Trump", the President wrote on Truth Social that "Bob Iger should do something about the losers and haters he’s got on his low rated shows".[12]
In popular culture
editIn a 2017 Saturday Night Live skit with Alec Baldwin and Cecily Strong, the President and First Lady are seen trimming a Christmas tree by hanging ornaments depicting the faces of "all the haters and losers I destroyed this year."[13]
The Daily Show host Trevor Noah's book "The Donald J. Trump Presidential Twitter Library" featured a chapter titled "9/11 haters & losers", showcasing dozens of uses of the phrase by Trump on social media.[14][15]
