Current/OS is a nonprofit organization that develops technical guidelines and standards-related frameworks for hybrid AC/DC electrical distribution systems and DC microgrids.[1][2] to support the energy transition[3]. The organization includes partners companies, universities, and laboratories involved in direct-current electrical systems.
Governance
editCurrent/OS is incorporated in The Netherlands. Its governance structure includes a board of director, an executive committee, and multiple committees. As of 2026, members of the board of directors were affiliated with companies including ABB, Eaton, Mersen, Schneider Electric, Tridonic and UL Solutions.
History
editThe Current/OS Foundation was established in 2021.
In 2022, the organization published an initial set of technical rules for DC microgrids, including guidance on voltage bands, power management, protection mechanisms, pre-charging processes, and grounding recommendations.
The foundation obtained Liaison A status with the IEC SyC for Low Voltage Direct Current LVDC in 2024.
In 2025, Current/OS released an updated version of its technical rules.
By 2026, the organization ported more than 130 partner organizations across over 30 countries in North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region, including equipment manufacturers, integrators, designers, installers, construction firms, universities, research institutions, trade organizations, and certification laboratories.
Collaborations
editCurrent/OS collaborates with organizations involved in direct-current electrical systems, including eMerge Alliance, ODCA, PEDF, Kepco (based in South Korea), Shift2DC (European program), IEEE ICDCM, and the Open Compute Project Foundation[4] for direct current power distribution in data centers.
Technical guidance
editCurrent/OS publishes a framework for hybrid AC/DC electrical systems and DC microgrids.
Voltage bands
editCurrent/OS publishes guidance on DC voltage bands intended to support interoperability between equipment and installations. The organization references IEC Technical Report 63282 in its voltage-band framework
Power management
editThe organization describes a distributed control approach based on voltage references and droop-control principles for DC microgrids.
Electrical protections
editCurrent/OS publishes technical guidance on protection zoning and fault management in DC installations.
Earthing / Grounding
editThe organization recommends galvanic isolation between AC and DC systems.
Installations using Current/OS rules
editCurrent/OS technical framework has been referenced in projects involving EV charging infrastructure, office buildings, and residential DC installations.[5]
