Brian Fischler
Brian Fischler (born February 2, 1973) is an American accessibility consultant, comedian, podcast host, public speaker, and nonprofit founder. He is the founder of Laugh For Sight, a comedy benefit organization supporting retinal disease research and guide dog programs.
Fischler is known for his work in digital accessibility, assistive technology, and artificial intelligence for blind users. He has appeared in coverage by NPR, NBC News, the Los Angeles Times, and the New York Daily News. He has also appeared on programs including Today and Top Gear USA.
Early life and education
editFischler was born in Port Jefferson, New York, and raised in Coral Springs, Florida. He was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease, at the age of thirteen.
He attended the University of Florida from 1991 to 1994 before leaving to pursue work in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. During the 1990s, Fischler worked in independent film production and later at Davis Entertainment.
As his vision deteriorated, Fischler returned to Florida and later relocated to New York City in 2000.
Comedy and entertainment career
editAfter moving to New York City, Fischler studied improvisational comedy and later transitioned into stand-up comedy. He performed at comedy clubs including Gotham Comedy Club, Carolines on Broadway, The Comedy Store, Hollywood Improv, and Laugh Factory.
In 2005, Fischler opened for comedians Kevin James, Ray Romano, and Gary Valentine at a comedy benefit in California supporting blindness-related causes.
Fischler was featured in a 2009 profile by the New York Daily News discussing his stand-up comedy career and partnership with his first guide dog, Nash.[1]
In 2010, Fischler appeared on Top Gear USA in a segment involving blind drifting challenges.[2] The episode was later discussed in coverage by the Los Angeles Times.[3]
He has also appeared on regional television programs including Today in New York and NY1.[4][5]
Laugh For Sight
editIn 2004, Fischler founded Laugh For Sight, a comedy benefit organization supporting retinal degenerative disease research and guide dog programs.
Laugh For Sight events have featured comedians and entertainers including Jerry Seinfeld, Robert Klein, Bill Burr, Colin Quinn, Sarah Silverman, Jim Gaffigan, Steven Wright, Tom Papa, and Jenna Elfman.
The events have been covered by publications and media outlets including Playbill, CBS News, and other entertainment media outlets.[6][7][8][9][10]
According to organizational materials, Laugh For Sight has raised more than $2 million for retinal disease research and guide dog organizations.[11]
Accessibility and assistive technology work
editFischler later built a career in accessibility consulting and assistive technology advocacy, working with companies including Yahoo and Verizon Media on digital accessibility initiatives.
His work has focused on screen reader accessibility, inclusive product design, and accessibility standards including WCAG and Section 508.
Fischler worked with Yahoo Sports and Yahoo Fantasy Sports on accessibility initiatives and later executive produced and appeared in a Yahoo documentary about the All Blind Fantasy Football League.[12]
He was also featured in a Yahoo Sports profile discussing the creation of the league after losing his sight.[13]
Podcasting and media
editFischler began podcasting in 2016 with iAccessVO, a podcast focused on iOS accessibility and assistive technology.
In 2018, he joined the Blind Abilities network as co-host of That Blind Tech Show. In 2020, Fischler assumed independent control of the program and relaunched it as That Real Blind Tech Show.
The podcast focuses on assistive technology, accessibility, artificial intelligence, and consumer technology for blind users.
Public speaking and advocacy
editFischler has spoken at accessibility and assistive technology conferences including Sight Tech Global, axe-con, the CSUN Assistive Technology Conference, and the M-Enabling Summit.
His presentations have focused on topics including artificial intelligence, assistive technology, smart glasses, accessibility, and inclusive product design for blind users.
He served as host of Sight Tech Global in 2022 and was also a featured speaker in 2021.[14][15]
Fischler also presented at axe-con in 2022.[16][17]
In 2023, Fischler appeared in coverage by NBC News and NPR discussing the use of artificial intelligence tools for blind and visually impaired users, including the Be My Eyes platform.[18][19]
He has also discussed emerging assistive technologies including Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses in interviews with accessibility publications.[20]
Personal life
editFischler became fully blind in 2009 as a result of Retinitis Pigmentosa. That same year, he was partnered with his first guide dog, Nash. In 2019, he was partnered with his second guide dog, Wesley.
He has lived in New York City since 2000 and in Queens since 2011.
