Undertale

edit

Undertale is a role-playing video game developed and published by American indie developer Toby Fox. It was released on 15 September 2015 for Microsoft Windows and macOS, with subsequent ports to PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox.[5] The game follows a human child who has fallen into the Underground, a subterranean realm inhabited by monsters sealed away behind a magical barrier. A central mechanic allows players to resolve combat encounters through dialogue and mercy rather than violence, with the game's narrative changing significantly based on the player's choices.

Fox composed the game's entire soundtrack single-handedly. The soundtrack album, Undertale Soundtrack, was released alongside the game in 2015, comprises 101 tracks and received widespread critical acclaim. The game has sold millions of copies worldwide and is widely regarded as one of the most influential independent video games ever made.[3]

Development

edit

To mark the tenth anniversary of Undertale, Lambert Jackson Productions—a London-based theatrical production company known for the Laurence Olivier Award-nominated play Cruise[6]—partnered with Materia Music to create a live orchestral concert. Materia Music is an independent video game music group, record label, music publisher, and rights administrator, with a roster whose works have accumulated billions of streams.[3] Orchestral arrangements were written specifically for the anniversary production by composer Adam Hoskins.[4]

The concert was curated personally by Toby Fox. On the project, Fox commented: "Undertale is a game with a lot of music, it's good when skilled professionals play the music and people listen to it."[7]

Announcement

edit

On 17 March 2026, SOHO Live announced the first-ever international concert tour for UNDERTALE: The Determination Symphony.[3] The announcement confirmed that the orchestral arrangements by Adam Hoskins, originally created for the tenth anniversary London performances, had been updated with additional scoring for the world tour.[4] The tour is co-produced by SOHO Live and AEG Presents.[7]

Presale tickets for most dates became available on 18 March 2026, with general sales beginning on 19 March 2026 at 10 AM local time.[4] On 1 May 2026, four additional UK dates—in Liverpool, Halifax, Grimsby, and Newcastle—were announced due to popular demand, with tickets going on sale on 4 May 2026.[8][9]

Format

edit

The world tour production features a 25-piece orchestra performing newly arranged versions of tracks from the Undertale soundtrack. Gameplay footage is displayed on a large screen above the stage and is synchronised with the music throughout the performance. The programme follows the game's narrative journey through the Underground across five zones: the Ruins, Snowdin, Waterfall, Hotland, and New Home.[10] Fans are encouraged to attend in Undertale-themed cosplay, and exclusive tour merchandise is available at venues.[7]

At select venues, the concert is performed in collaboration with resident orchestras; for example, the Seattle Symphony performs the programme for the Seattle dates.[11]
