Sucheta Bhattacharjee is an Indian Hindustani classical singer, music educator, and music director based in Mumbai. She is an exponent of the Kirana Gharana and has trained singers for over two decades, mentoring students who have competed on national television music programmes. She co-founded the Centre of Excellence in Indian and Western Music (CEIWM) in Shillong and Tura in collaboration with the Government of Meghalaya.

Early life and education

Sucheta Bhattacharjee was born in Assam, India.[1] She trained in Hindustani classical music under Pandit Mani Prasad of the Kirana Gharana.[2]

Sucheta Bhattacharjee has worked as a classical voice trainer for over two decades. Among her students are contestants who have appeared on national music reality programmes including Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Star Voice of India, Sur Kshetra, and Zee Little Champs.[3][4]

Sucheta Bhattacharjee served as the Founding Dean of the SaReGaMaPaDhaNiSa Academy in Mumbai.[4]

Centre of Excellence in Indian and Western Music

In December 2016, Sucheta Bhattacharjee and her husband Shubho Shekhar Bhattacharjee co-founded the Centre of Excellence in Indian and Western Music (CEIWM) in Shillong and Tura, in collaboration with the Department of Arts and Culture, Government of Meghalaya, with the support of then Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.[1][3] The centre was established to provide formal training in both Indian classical and Western music to young people in Meghalaya.[1] Students of the institution performed at a debut multi-genre album preview in Mumbai attended by singer Shaan.[3]

In August 2018, The Telegraph covered the Government of Meghalaya's CEIWM initiative as part of broader state efforts to develop a classical music training infrastructure in the Northeast.[2]

In November 2021, the Mizoram Youth Commission signed a memorandum of understanding with MusiConnect Asia in connection with music promotion initiatives associated with Sucheta Bhattacharjee's Centre for Creative Excellence.[5]

Film work

Sucheta Bhattacharjee served as co-music director, alongside Rahi Sayed, for the 2024 Hindi supernatural horror film A Wedding Story, which was released in cinemas on 30 August 2024.[7]

Performances

In December 2025, Sucheta Bhattacharjee presented Spandan, an evening of musical performances at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai.[8]

Students

National media outlets reported that actor Aamir Khan has been taking Hindustani classical singing lessons from Sucheta Bhattacharjee. In an August 2024 interview with the Times of India, Khan stated he had been doing so for approximately one year.[9] In March 2025, NDTV reported that Khan had described studying classical music under Sucheta Bhattacharjee's guidance for two years.[10]

Actress Manjari Fadnnis has identified Sucheta Bhattacharjee as her singing teacher in interviews in 2019 and 2024.[11][12]

Recognition

In April 2026, Sucheta Bhattacharjee received the Swabhiman Award from the Nobel Foundation Trust at a ceremony held at Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan, Ludhiana, presided over by Gulab Chand Kataria, the Governor of Punjab.[13][14][15]
