Introduction

edit

Fidosi Kerchev (born 1998 in Razgrad, Bulgaria), is a Bulgarian classical pianist. He is a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and the Schola Cantorum de Paris. He is the recipient of the 2024 Crystal Lyra Award in the "Young Artist" category.[1]

His career includes solo performances with the Sofia Philharmonic and a 2020 performance for Queen Mathilde of Belgium.[2]

Education and Training

edit

Between 2014 and 2017, he obtained the Diplôme Supérieur, Diplôme de Virtuosité, and Diplôme de Concert from the Schola Cantorum de Paris.[3] He has participated in masterclasses with pianists such as Boris Petrushansky and Marie-Josèphe Jude, and cites Jenny Zaharieva as a mentor.[4] Kerchev's musical style has been described as a synthesis of the Russian and German piano schools, stemming from Zaharieva's lineage at the Moscow Conservatory and his subsequent studies with Johan Schmidt in Brussels.[5]

Kerchev received his initial musical training at the National Academy of Music (Bulgaria) in Sofia, graduating in 2017. He later studied at the Conservatoire à rayonnement régional de Paris [fr] and the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. At the latter, he earned a master's degree in 2022 and a Specialized Master in 2023 under the guidance of Johan Schmidt.[6]

Career

edit

As a soloist, Kerchev has appeared with various orchestras including the Orchestre Philharmonique de Liège, the Sofia Philharmonic, and the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra.[7] He has collaborated with conductors such as Gergely Madaras, Jacques Vanherenthals, and Rosen Gergov.

His repertoire includes works such as Piano Concerto No. 2 (Brahms), Piano Concerto No. 1 (Tchaikovsky), and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. In 2020, he was selected to represent the Royal Conservatory of Brussels in a performance for Queen Mathilde of Belgium.[2]

In September 2022, Kerchev performed as a soloist with the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra at Bulgaria Concert Hall, performing Johannes Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 2 under the baton of Konstantin Ilievsky. [8]

In January 2025, Kerchev performed a dual-piano concert in Razgrad with the Belgian pianist Johan Schmidt, featuring works by Mendelssohn, Milhaud, and Gershwin. [9]

Kerchev is a frequent performer at major Bulgarian music festivals, including Sofia Music Weeks [bg], the Varna Summer International Music Festival, and the New Year Music Festival at the National Palace of Culture. His international activity includes recitals at Flagey in Brussels, the Bulgarian Embassy in Tokyo, and the Bulgarian Cultural Institute of Paris. [4] He has also appeared at international forums such as the Académie Internationale de Nice in France, Forum Musikae in Madrid, and the San Biagio and Giulio Rospigliosi festivals in Italy.[4]
