Bert Seager (born January 25, 1955) is an American jazz pianist, composer, and educator active in the Boston jazz scene since the 1980s.^[1]

Early life and education

Seager was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and raised in Mountainside, New Jersey. Studying classical piano from 2nd through 12th grade and played in blues and rock bands in middle and high school.

He graduated from Haverford College in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music and economics.^[1] He later earned a Master of Music degree in jazz studies from the New England Conservatory.^[2]

Career

Seager has been active as a jazz pianist and composer since the early 1980s.^[3] He has toured with his band extensively both in the United States and internationally in China, Hungary, Bulgaria, Ecuador, Peru, Canada, Israel, Jordan, and Japan.

Releasing 21 albums as a leader over the course of forty years. From 1985 to 2010, he was a resident pianist at the Bristol Lounge in the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston.^[4] In 2009, he joined the faculty of the New England Conservatory.^[2]

Music and style

Critics have noted the sophisticated, lyrical style that balances adventurous improvisation with melodic beauty.^[5] His playing features piquant harmonies, a conversational approach to group interaction.

Awards and recognition

Seager has received a jazz fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.^[2] Three time winner of an extended residency at the MacDowell in Peterborough, New Hampshire. He is listed as a Steinway Artist.^[6]
