Alalahti, also known as Laukujärvi Alalahti,[1] is a village in Kiruna municipality, Norrbotten county, Sweden. The village is located on the northern shore of the lake Laukujärvi, which is part of the Kalix River. As of June 2025 15 people above the age of 16 had Alalahti registered as their adress.[2]
The village lies by Road 870, west of Kiruna, and is home to both valuable meadow- and pasture land and good hunting and fishing grounds. Due to the village's adjacency to areas vital to reindeer herding no new buildings are allowed north of the road.[3] The village lies within the area of Laevas Sámi Community (Northern Sámi: Leaváš čearru).[4]
History
editAlalahti was first permanently settled during the latter end of the 19th century by the spouses Josef "Jooseppi" Persson Huuva (1864-1923) and Karolina "Karu" Annasdotter of the Stålnacke family (1873-1947). Josef, who was a Sámi reindeer herder, had at the time lost his herd and thus resorted to settling down in the manner of the Lantalaiset to survive.[5][1]
In 1930 Anna Karolina Olofsson from Kaalasjärvi founded what would become known as Kylvimaa. Kylvimaa is today connected to the nearby village Laukuluspa, but has historically been considered part of Alalahti despite being a distance away.[5]
