Subway map fragment in GCT
edit

I noticed a strange artifact in the Dining Concourse of Grand Central Terminal in September: a small fragment of a subway map on tiles. It's located just to the right of the stairs to the whispering gallery and Oyster Bar. It shows a bit of the Fourth Avenue Line and Culver Line in Brooklyn; unusually, south is up. The presence of both the B and M on the Fourth Avenue Line places it between 1986 and 2004. However, I can't find a time that both the M and N operated local on this section. Does anyone have any idea why this map fragment exists, and when it was created? Pi.1415926535 (talk) 05:05, 12 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Pi.1415926535, I have no idea why this specific map fragment was chosen to decorate the station. However, this lines up neatly with the terminal's 1995 renovation. During this time,
midday N service ran local in Brooklyn, replacing the M, which was cut back from 9th Avenue to Chambers Street
, so it's definitely possible that the N was marked as a local service on 4th Ave, despite running express during rush hours. – Epicgenius (talk) 14:23, 12 November 2025 (UTC)

Tense of subway car classes
editI have noticed that we use past-tense for subway cars that are retired, and we use present-tense for subway cars that are still in service. I was wondering, wouldn't it make more sense to use present-tense for all of the subway cars that still exist? Regardless of if it's an R17 or an R46, the cars still exist. The only example I can think of where we could use the past-tense for a fleet is the R27 as all of the cars were scrapped and no trace of the subway car exists anymore. For example: "The R17 is a retired New York City Subway car model", we would make mention of the fleet being retired/removed from revenue service. Thoughts? —LRG5784 (talk · contribs · email) 16:06, 10 April 2026 (UTC)
