Birth/death places in bios

edit

Hello. Was there a consensus to add "(now Czech Republic)" to bios of people born or died in Czechoslovakia? I've noticed inconsistencies on many bios. GoodDay (talk) 15:47, 22 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

I am not aware of this. This detail may be in the text, but should not be in the infobox. FromCzech (talk) 19:40, 22 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
I had found them in some of the Czech presidents & prime ministers infoboxes & deleted them. GoodDay (talk) 19:57, 22 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
GoodWork, GoodDay. FromCzech (talk) 06:30, 23 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
What exactly is the objection to including this small clarification in the infobox? I would have thought it is useful context for readers. Jdcooper (talk) 13:03, 23 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
FromCzech and Jdcooper, I assume GoodDay removed it per MOS:GEO. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. Djalim ໒꒱˚。⋆ 11:13, 25 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
The only mention of this issue I can see there is: "For clarity, consider also mentioning the current name of the area (for example, "in what is now France"), especially if no English name exists for that area in the relevant historical period." I think providing a clarification of the modern-day country of someone's birth is useful and helpful to readers, and doesn't take up too much space. Jdcooper (talk) 00:39, 26 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, birthplace is usually mentioned in the first sentence of a biography, and it is okay to mention the current territorial division in brackets. But it is pretty consistently not put in the infobox (at least as far as Czechs and Slovaks are concerned) and I am OK with that (I don't think it's that important that it extends the infobox by at least one more line). The infobox only provides basic information in brief. FromCzech (talk) 07:58, 26 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

AfC draft declined — Czech punk band, abundant sourcing in established publications, mostly offline print. Need experienced eyes.

edit

Hello, I’m reaching out to see if any members of WikiProject Music Czech Republic might be willing to assist with a draft article about Dirty Pictures, a Czech punk rock band active in Prague from 1992–1995.

The band has a notable history: their debut album was released on a Panton Records sub-label, two songs charted on Czech radio, their video became the first by a Czech band selected for MTV Europe’s 120 Minutes Best Of compilation, and in April 1994 they organized and performed at a benefit concert for Yugoslav war refugees at which Joe Strummer joined them onstage for a set of Clash songs — an event covered by NME.

The draft was recently declined at AfC. The sourcing is extensive but almost entirely pre-internet Czech print — major newspapers and the leading music magazines of the era. I have scans of all clippings. The submission was made by a brand new account, which I suspect contributed to the decline.

If any experienced editor with an interest in Central European or punk/rock music history would be willing to review the draft or assist with resubmission, I’d be very grateful.

Full disclosure: I created this draft on behalf of a founding member of the band, who provided all the sources.

New Czech politicians

edit

I've come across articles related to Czech politicians who are relatively new to the politics world. I noticed all of them are stubs so I put Multiple issues template on them. I don't know if this also happens to articles of politicians from other countries. ⋆。˚꒰ঌ Clara A. Djalim ໒꒱˚。⋆ 14:53, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

New articles that are short?? And have quality issues?? Man, I have never seen that before 😂
It's true that our coverage of non English speaking countries lags behind, but you've just described the average WP bio! (t · c) buIdhe 02:03, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Football team nickname

edit

Hi, I wonder if "Nároďák" is a legitimate name for the Czech Republic national football team. It appears in the infobox there but is unreferenced. I noticed the team used in the match report for yesterday's friendly titled "Czech earn Náro victory in final warm-up before World Cup". While I was guessing Náro was an opposition player or perhaps the town where they were playing, it appears it's used due to similarity(!) of the truncated form of Nároďák to the English word "narrow". Even though there are mentions of "Fotbalový nároďák" in media, this is just a description akin to "the national football team", and not a nickname per se. I welcome any views from others here. C679 11:15, 5 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

See Czech Wiktionary, it is an informal term used for a national team (the football team, but also the hockey team). Same as Repre. Both terms are commonly used in Czech media, and the reader has to infer from context which national sports team they refer to. Jklamo (talk) 11:50, 5 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
It's a colloquial abbreviation for národní tým ('national team'), but I wouldn't call it a nickname. Any team can be labelled as nároďák in the media (even non-football teams, even non-Czech teams). FromCzech (talk) 11:52, 5 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks both, have removed from the infobox. C679 05:27, 7 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
