Naming convention for two Mexican clubs - consensus needed

edit

There are two Mexican clubs, Tigres UANL and Pumas UNAM, that are most commonly referred to as "Tigres" and "Pumas" as standalone respectively by most reliable sources. I brought this up to an editor, User:Mediocre Legacy, given that there are many articles across Wikipedia that refer to the teams simply as "UANL" or "UNAM" (which, again, is not how sources refer to them as standalone). In fact, these are the university abbreviations, see UANL and UNAM.

I've tried to be civil after +20 of my edits were reverted by them, and provided reliable sources showing in their talkpage that we should use "Tigres UANL" as the first mention followed by "Tigres", and "Pumas UNAM" followed by "Pumas", per WP:COMMONNAME. They keep making changes despite this and not sure how to proceed other than seeking consensus as the editor has not provided sources for their claims. Morogris () 19:12, 5 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

I agree with you. Geschichte (talk) 07:13, 8 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I agree with this. I refer to them as Tigres and Pumas. I used to mix up which was which when I only saw the acronyms, and I'm sure those less familiar with Mexican football would have just as much trouble. RedPatch (talk) 15:26, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I wanted to follow up and close the loop after some discussions with other editors. I reached out to GoPurpleNGold24, a seasoned editor in Mexican football, and we discussed the naming conventions, where we agreed that the standalone abbreviations "UANL" and "UNAM" are not to be used to refer to the teams on their own.
They said that it should be "Tigres UANL" and "Pumas UNAM" for all mentions, though I'd also be fine with using "Tigres UANL" and "Pumas UNAM" for the first mention in the lead, infobox, and honours section, then "Tigres" and "Pumas" for all other mentions throughout the article's paragraphs. I've been slowly making these changes across Mexico-related articles, which will take some time. If anyone has questions or additional points to consider, feel free to chime in. Morogris () 20:22, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
why didn't you invite them here to discuss? Having related discussions in multiple different places is poor form and the 2 of you are not enough to decide on project-wide consensus. Spike 'em (talk) 20:44, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
It was GoPurpleNGold24 and MediocreLegacy only. I don't know who else is involved with Mexican-football articles but I'll message them inviting them here. Morogris () 20:46, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Terry McDermott?

edit

Fairly certain that the footballer in the far right of this photograph is Terry McDermott, taken from a preseason tournament between Ajax and Liverpool in 1977. If so, can someone crop the photograph to a decent size, as the image for McDermott's article? APM (talk) 01:18, 6 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Want to join Wiki Loves Fútbol?

edit

You are all invited to participate in Wiki Loves Fútbol! We're running it during the 2026 World Cup, starting now until July 19. Help us edit pages on everything futbol: think national teams from across Latin America, players, host cities, and the stuff around the cup that usually gets short shrift, like the immigration and culture angles. We're working in both English and Spanish.

Here's the fun part: it's set up like a Panini sticker album. You collect stamps for different kinds of contributions: editing an article, adding a photo over on Wikimedia Commons, doing a translation, or starting a Wikidata item. Fill the album first to win $200. That’s not all: we are also giving out $25 prizes to the “Player of the Match” every week the contest runs. You don't have to be a power editor to play. Everyone is welcome!

If you're a little curious, come take a look at our target articles. Do you think we are missing some good articles? We are open to suggestions! The best place to actually get going is our WikiLatinos Discord, that's where the article missions will live, where the leaderboard is, and where someone can point you to a good first edit if you want one.

Hope many jumps in, Oscar_. (talk) 17:11, 9 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Mentioning nationalities of leagues

edit

See last edits on Alex Amorim, and my talk page post to last user to edit it. I won't say any more due to WP:CANVAS and how I find myself making more points than a lawyer for the most trivial parts of Wikipedia writing. Unknown Temptation (talk) 21:27, 9 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

I would not add "Italian" in front of [[Serie A]]. Nehme1499 (talk) 21:38, 9 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Amorim is Brazilian, a country with its own Serie A. Ditto its own Primeira Liga. I don't see how this hurts anyone, it simply makes an article more accessible for someone less into football than us. Unknown Temptation (talk) 22:01, 9 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I can't see why it's a problem to add Italian. By removing it we are assuming that every reader knows that Genoa is an Italian club and that Serie A is an Italian league even though (as noted above) the country which Amorim literally hails from also has a Serie A...... -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 07:25, 10 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
As long as it's only in the body of the article and not in the lead sentence. Nehme1499 (talk) 09:20, 10 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Why not in the lead? What harm does having that one extra word in the lead do? I would argue it's more important to have it in the lead if anything, as readers often only skim the start of the article and don't read all the way to the end -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 09:51, 10 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Imagine this: a Swedish player plays for Viking FK in the Eliteserien. Most people don't know the country of that team or league. They can either incorrectly take the suggestion that both are Swedish like him, or we can tell them they are Norwegian. What would be the better example of informational writing? Unknown Temptation (talk) 10:35, 10 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
It should be in the lead. Most readers are probably going through read the first sentence of the article and not go through the sections. I don't see an issue with including the nationality of the league in the lead. Sounds like those who want to exclude it are applying WP:IDON'TLIKEIT. Morogris () 17:35, 10 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I have no issues with using both in situations where it might be ambiguous. GiantSnowman 18:24, 10 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I agree. No issue with using country name, especially when it's not obvious, while majority of people probably know Juventus is in Italy, a good portion may not recognize, for example, Sassuolo. Also, for exameple, Romania has Liga I, Poland has I liga, and Lithuania has I Lyga - I can't even remember the difference - nation name helps so much. RedPatch (talk) 15:28, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Then should the same be done in the Career stats table? Nehme1499 (talk) 21:44, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Every African club that has a Premier League or every South American that has a Primera División have the nationality attached to them, though I doubt they use that full name in their respective countries. I have seen many players move between the Primera Divisións of, say, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Uruguay. I would not necessarily use the nationality if they exclusively have played in their own country; this could be piped [[Ghana Premier League|Premier League]] Geschichte (talk) 04:51, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I would absolutely caution against doing that. Writing "[A player from Ghana] plays in the Premier League" would make it look like he plays in England -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 06:34, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/New articles

edit

For the purposes of Wikipedia:WikiProject Football/New articles, is a new article one that is completely new? That is to say, if a redirect is converted to an article, should that article be listed? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 15:19, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Yes, redirects to main space are considered new articles (not sure there but yes by definition). At DYK, "moving to mainspace" counts for the newness requirement needed to feature something there. Morogris () 20:27, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Agree that a 'conversion' can be considered a 'new' article. GiantSnowman 20:48, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
What I mean is that Bovingdon F.C. and Sharpness A.F.C. were redirects created by Merovingian (talk · contribs) way back in 2016, and in the last few days I've made both of them into articles. Should I list them as new articles? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:57, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, you put in the work to make them new articles. A redirect is technically not a mainspace article so it should definitely count. Morogris () 00:03, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you all, so added. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 23:01, 12 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Man of the Match - Player of the Match for 2026 FIFA World Cup

edit

FIFA is calling the honor player of the match, but the colloquial and more commonly used expression is man of the match. Guidance? ProfPatMcKelvey (talk) 04:16, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

The BBC has referred to this award as 'player of the match' for some time. This game shows that term as an example. They used "man of the match" previously but with the growing recognition of other varieties of categorised football including Soccer Aid and Women's football in England, I think 'player of the match' is the general name of the award. The article Player of the match was titled Man of the match until 2018. Cheers, Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 08:45, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
IMO if the official name of the award at this particular tournament is Player of the Match then we should use that rather than use a more colloquial term. We have an article entitled Academy Awards even though they are far far better known as the Oscars -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 15:59, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Agree with Chris - use the same nomenclature as the tournament. GiantSnowman 16:05, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Agree with all of you. Was getting reverted for not putting MOTM. However, didn't know if there was standardization. Just trying to do my best by posting the "Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match" after each game lol. ProfPatMcKelvey (talk) 16:17, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Problematic article on Uruguay

edit

This Wikiproject should probably take a look at improving this article, which (minor some recent trimming from me, including a whole WP:QUOTEFARM section) has some severe NPOV issues and seems to be maintained mostly by a single user as well... The Spanish language article seems to have the exact same problem and is probably written by the same author so is no reference in the matter. There are surely better sources about the status/recognition as world championships of the 1924 and 1928 Olympic tournaments than some selectively chosen snippets on a dedicated archive.org collection? ~2026-34637-28 (talk) 17:51, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Felix Nmecha

edit

Maybe this is the wrong board for this discussion which isn't on his footballing, but I notice his remarks on gay people are in the Dortmund section and the personal life. They probably should be mentioned with whatever weight is due (I have no idea and don't want to add or remove anything) but putting them in two sections seems a bit like a social media pile on, especially given how little is written about his high level career. What do others think? Unknown Temptation (talk) 20:47, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Agree. There were discussions before his transfer and fans were not happy with the move at first sight, so maybe Dortmund is the better section? But could live with either, just not both. Kante4 (talk) 21:03, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Agree, we should just have in the Dortmund section OR the Personal life section, but not both. Given that his reactions came from Dortmund fans, I think we should add it to his club section only. Feel free to make the change. Morogris () 21:57, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
