Swap Shirakawa, Gifu (village)  5 with Historic Villages of Shirakawa-gō and Gokayama Non-vital article

edit

Shirakawa, Gifu (village) owes its fame solely to the World Heritage Site Historic Villages of Shirakawa-gō and Gokayama that it contains. Apart from this, there is nothing particularly special about this village of just over one thousand inhabitants.

Swap Chaoshan  5 with China proper Non-vital article

edit

"Chaoshan" is merely a collective name for Jieyang  5, Chaozhou  5, and Shantou  5—an area roughly equivalent to a big single prefecture-level city in China. As a small regional entity, it is no is no more significant than the ancestral home of the Teochew people Non-vital article in Minnan region Non-vital article. The so-called "Chaoshan culture Non-vital article" and "Chaoshan cuisine Non-vital article" are in fact variants of Hokkien culture Non-vital article and Fujian cuisine Non-vital article. They are definitely not abstract but very clearly defined and collectively listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, of which Imperial City only makes up a small portion. KhaiDo (talk) 10:00, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
My English isn't good, and I failed to express my true meaning clearly. This led you to latch onto a single word I used and argue against it, but the reality is, you aren't actually refuting the point I was trying to make. My view is that many World Heritage designations are inherently just artificial concepts that bundle multiple ancient structures together, like Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor Non-vital article (Silk Road  3), Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara Non-vital article (Heijō-kyō  5, include Tōdai-ji  5) and Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties Non-vital article (include Ming tombs  5). Similarly, the Complex of Huế Monuments Non-vital article is merely a defined concept that stitches together various architectural clusters in Huế  4. It is neither a concept of an ancient city (and thus cannot represent the ancient urban history of Huế), nor is it a single monument or a standalone architectural complex. Moreover, the Imperial City is the most significant architectural cluster within it, so how can it be dismissed as a 'minor concept'? It’s like assuming that because the Beijing Central Axis Non-vital article is a World Heritage site, the overarching concept is therefore more important than the specific landmarks it encompasses, such as the Forbidden City  4, Zhongnanhai  5, Tiananmen Square  5 or Temple of Heaven  5.飞车过大关 (talk) 13:17, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Unless the content of this concept's article is exceptionally well-written, I don't see why I should support a Start-class article that merely describes a World Heritage project and only has 11 interwikis, over a C-class article that covers the architectural complex with rich content and boasts 18 interwikis. 飞车过大关 (talk) 13:25, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think the word you were looking for was "arbitrary", which I can get behind. Still, aren't most concepts artificial? Borders are as much of a human construct as heritage sites. It's better to look into the reason behind the concept. In this case, it's because these monuments were commissioned by the Nguyễn dynasty  4 kings and resided at their capital, which was Huế. They have a very clear architectural style and embodies their lasting influence as well as that of the French colonizers. They were not constructed by UNESCO but recognized as such by our state and people, so by no means are they arbitrary. In Vietnamese media, "Complex of Huế Monuments" is much more common "Imperial City of Huế", precisely because the Imperial City, while important in its own right, takes up a small portion of the complex in terms ofscale and quantity, which includes many more notable structures like Thiên Mụ Temple. If anything, Seven Wonders of the Ancient World  4 is a more arbitrary concept than this. And finally, isn't the VA project supposed to improve and/or maintain the quality of articles deemed important? It's such backwards logic to hold the poor quality of an article against it. KhaiDo (talk) 15:29, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
As we all know, ancient architecture is certainly not a product of modern construction. I have never claimed that ancient buildings were constructed by UNESCO; I only hold that the concept itself is a term popularized by UNESCO. Furthermore, my core objection has never hinged on article quality. The fundamental reason is that the Level 5 list never includes general overview articles covering a city’s architectural landscape. For instance, it does not feature the New York Skyline Non-vital article but includes the Empire State Building  4; it excludes the Imperial Palaces of the Ming and Qing Dynasties in Beijing and Shenyang Non-vital article while listing the Forbidden City  4; it omits the Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments Non-vital article but incorporates the Winter Palace  5. In my view, the Level 5 list should not set a precedent for accepting such general urban architectural overview entries merely for the sake of diversity. 飞车过大关 (talk) 19:43, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I think you misunderstood. I meant that UNESCO did not contruct the concept of the complex out of thin air, but rather it was a concrete concept recognized by Vietnam. KhaiDo (talk) 20:00, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I see. I was under the impression that the name of Vietnam's World Heritage site, like many others, was a term coined during the nomination process, rather than a concept that was already widely accepted beforehand. However, even if the 'Complex of Huế Monuments' is indeed a widely accepted concept in Vietnam's architectural history, it is still closer to an artificially designated classification.飞车过大关 (talk) 20:12, 1 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Remove 9 Japanese cities

In the level 5 list, Japan has nearly 50 articles on its prefectures (each roughly equivalent to the size of a city in Asia countries) located in the region and country sections, along with 66 articles on Japanese cities in the city section. This gives Japanese cities a disproportionate representation in the level 5 list. To address this issue, I have decided to remove some articles about Japanese cities:

  1. Fukui (city) Non-vital article:With a population of only 250,000 (which is relatively small for an Asian city), its coverage overlaps with that of Fukui Prefecture  5, and the city itself has no notable features.
  2. Toyama (city) Non-vital article:With a population of over 400,000 and covering nearly 30% of the area of Toyama Prefecture, Toyama (city) serves as the prefectural capital. Considering that the city also has no particularly notable features,, I believe Toyama Prefecture  5 alone is sufficient.
  3. Fukuyama, Hiroshima Non-vital article:Aside from housing Japan's largest steelworks and offering views of the Seto Inland Sea  4, this satellite city of Hiroshima  4 has little to offer that is particularly attractive.
  4. Wakayama (city) Non-vital article:With a population of just over 350,000, this city accounts for nearly 40% of Wakayama Prefecture  5's population and also serves as the prefectural capital. Due to the development of Osaka  4, Wakayama Prefecture has become the only prefecture in Japan to experience population decline over the past four decades, and the city's importance has been steadily diminishing. If it weren't for the Kishū Domain Non-vital article having a trace of historical recognition in Japan, I wouldn't even bother to pay attention to this city.
  5. Funabashi Non-vital article:A populous satellite city of Tokyo  3 and the second-largest city in Chiba Prefecture  5, it has no particularly noteworthy features. Considering that the Level 5 list doesn't even include Shinjuku Non-vital article, I believe there is no need to include this city, much like Sanhe, Hebei Non-vital article near Beijing  3 or Taicang Non-vital article near Shanghai  4.
  6. Mito, Ibaraki Non-vital article:With a population of just over 260,000, the prefectural capital of Ibaraki Prefecture  5 is renowned for the Mitogaku Non-vital article and the Mito Tokugawa family Non-vital article, but apart from this, there is nothing particularly outstanding about it.
  7. Takasaki Non-vital article:The most populous city in Gunma Prefecture  5, with a population of over 370,000, it appears quite unremarkable compared to Maebashi  5, which has a similar population size, and has no outstanding features.
  8. Kurume Non-vital article:A small city with a population of just over 290,000, it pales in insignificance compared to Fukuoka  4 and Kitakyushu  5, which are also located in Fukuoka Prefecture  5.
  9. Yamagata (city) Non-vital article:A satellite city of Sendai  4 with a population of just over 240,000, it serves as the prefectural capital of Yamagata Prefecture  5, but it has no distinctive features. Even the GA-level Chinese Wikipedia article about this city fails to demonstrate that it possesses any truly important characteristics.

Swap Sagamihara  5 with Kamakura Non-vital article

edit

Although Sagamihara is the third most populous city in Kanagawa Prefecture  5, aside from its proximity to the Tokyo  3 metropolitan area and its role in absorbing some of Tokyo's population, it does not possess outstanding significance. In contrast, Kamakura, also located in Kanagawa Prefecture, has a population of just over 170,000, yet it is one of Japan's most historically significant cities. As a major tourist destination in the Kanto region and one of Japan's ancient capitals alongside Kyoto  4 and Nara (city)  5, this city deserves to be included in the level 5 list to address the list's erroneous overemphasis on population size.

  1. Every city with more than 700.000 should be included, they arent, especially in China and India, but they should. Ipedecha (talk) 11:47, 7 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Population is a criterion for classifying cities, but not the only one. In particular, certain satellite cities of major metropolises may qualify for Level 5 status due to meeting population thresholds, which would squeeze out slots for many ancient cities. For a city to be included, I believe only those exceeding 5 million should be admitted unconditionally; cities above 1 million may be considered with confidence, while those below 1 million require evaluation of their historical significance, cultural heritage, economic importance, and overall influence to determine eligibility. 飞车过大关 (talk) 12:04, 7 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
The above scenario applies exclusively to Asia, given its massive population where cities ranging from 100,000 to 800,000 inhabitants are far from uncommon. 飞车过大关 (talk) 12:07, 7 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I strongly disagree that asians people should count less just because there are more asians than every other continent population combined, a life is a life no matter if they are one in many or one in few. If a sattalite city has enought people to qualify than it should be include, one can see that as giving more slot to cities that deserve more slots. I agree that culturally and historically important cities that have small pop should be included (I propose Ouro Preto  5 afterall), but there is not a cities is currently underquota and there is not a bunch of proposals going on, and others may disagree, but i dont believe any of the v5 actors can be more important than a city of 700.000 not matter if one could argue is effectivelly a part of another city (obviously variety and all that matters) and ideally the quota of cities should be increase (i think there is other stuff that should be increase first, so that probably not going to happen anytime soon). Ipedecha (talk) 12:36, 7 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
I need to remind you that according to my research, there are approximately 515 cities in China with a population of over 500,000 (see 中华人民共和国城市人口排名 in zhwiki). Moreover, there are also many counties or districts with populations exceeding 500,000. For example, the district where I live covers less than 90 square kilometers but has a population of over one million. However, since the city this district represents is already on the Level 4 list, I will not propose adding this district. Attention to population should also take diversity into account. It is absurd to insist that a city with a population of just over 700,000 must automatically rank among the 1,000 most important cities in the world. A population of 700,000 can only be considered a truly large city in regions outside Asia, and this perspective itself reflects a Western-centric view. 飞车过大关 (talk) 14:33, 7 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
In comparison, in Brazil, there are only about 50 cities that meet this standard. No wonder you would consider a city of 700,000 to be a true metropolis. If it weren't for my Eastern-centric perspective at play, I would certainly also think that a city of 700,000 deserves a spot on the list. 飞车过大关 (talk) 14:47, 7 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
China has 7 times the population of Brazil, of course it has way more cities with over a million. Brazil also has a bigger area that is not desert plus mountain and China has centrally planed economy. The urban density of China is not foreign to me as i known people who travel to it yearly and tell tales of driving for 6 hours and still being in a city, and i have been to Asia beforeIpedecha (talk) 19:12, 7 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Victoria Peak is only the 29th-highest peak in Hong Kong, standing at less than 600 meters in height. It is famous for its location in the heart of Hong Kong, offering views of the city's skyline, and for being one of the city's affluent neighborhoods. But aside from that, the mountain holds no unique geographical significance or historical value; its importance is even less than that of the Santa Monica Mountains Non-vital article near Los Angeles.

Swap Lion Rock  5 with Mount Lu Non-vital article

edit

Lion Rock is a Hong Kong peak with only 15 interwikis. Standing 495 meters high, it resembles a lion in shape. Aside from the imagery borrowed by Hong Kong's people in proposing the "Lion Rock Spirit" from the television series Below the Lion Rock and the Below the Lion Rock (song), the mountain itself holds no unique geographical value or historical significance within China.

In contrast, Lushan is one of China's most renowned mountains and summer resorts, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of the unlisted Chinese agglomerations with population over 1 million, this city has the most pageviews in English Wikipedia. It reportedly has the second largest GDP in Anhui province. Although Nigeria is a populous country in Africa, not every one of the 30 Nigerian cities listed on the Level 5 roster has a large population, with Lafia being the least significant. The city has a population of only around half a million, placing it outside the top 35 most populous cities in Nigeria, and it lacks distinctive features of sufficient importance, making it rather unremarkable.

In contrast, although Massawa has a population of less than 100,000, it served as the former capital of Eritrea, is an ancient and historically significant Red Sea port, and ranks among the world's hottest cities in terms of average temperature. Lena Delta Wildlife Reserve  5 is a Russian wildlife reserve with only 13 interwikis. While it has some notable ecological features, I fail to see how it distinguishes itself from other similar reserves. Furthermore, it less significant than both the Lena Delta and the Lena Pillars Non-vital article (a World Heritage Site with numerous interwikis, despite its sparse content).

In contrast, Uvs Lake Basin Non-vital article spans both Mongolia and Russia, boasting 32 interwikis. As both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Ramsar site, it features a much richer ecological profile. Adding this article would effectively fill the gap in the Level 5 list and correct the systemic bias regarding the lack of Mongolian articles.

I think that this page warrants inclusion based on this alone. Remove 4 Capital districts and territories

I maintain that since the Level 5 list already includes a country's capital, it is unnecessary to separately list Capital districts and territories. Doing so undermines the diversity of the Level 5 list.

Remove some cities

Doing some impromptu removal nominations. By the way, I nominated a bunch of Tehran's suburbs a couple of months ago.

Of all the metropolitan areas we have on here, why is this one of them?

  2. Both Quad Cities  5 and Eugene, Oregon  5 should absolutely be removed. The importance of these American cities to human history is no greater than that of Newport, Rhode Island  5, which is about to be removed. Measuring a city's importance solely by its population is one-sided.飞车过大关 (talk) 08:57, 27 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I'm removing it because of its population; it ranks 148th. Bluevestman (talk) 18:10, 27 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

  1. I think it has nothing to do with whether this is a "metropolitan area" instead of a "city" but simply because it's a reasonably large cluster of population. It doesn't have a smaller population than some others like Eugene, Oregon  5 (though it is at the low end of importance for this list). Melozone crissalis (talk) 00:46, 27 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Therefore, Indian cities with a population of less than 600,000 in the 2010s are absolutely unlikely to meet the criteria for the Level 5 list, especially given that these two cities are essentially satellite towns.飞车过大关 (talk) 09:01, 27 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

  2. The only thing that makes Yiwu important is the Yiwu International Trade City Non-vital article. Apart from that, this county town itself is no more important than many Chinese cities not on the level5 list. Yiwu's importance was only established after the 21st century. I believe this city is not more important than Zhangzhou Non-vital article or Putian Non-vital article.飞车过大关 (talk) 09:23, 27 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I'm sure you mean no harm, but any reason for picking two Fujian cities as comparisons rather than places from other provinces? feminist🩸 (talk) 15:59, 1 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Because I can choose whichever cities for comparison, as long as they are more significant than Yiwu. Fujian is south of Zhejiang, and the major cities in Taiwan, Guangdong, and Jiangsu are basically all on the Level 5 list, so why can't I take two cities in Fujian as examples? Or do I need to list out all the important cities for you? I think your doubt is completely unnecessary—anyone who has read the history of these two cities would never make such a pointless nitpick, especially when they refer to the largest seaport in China during the Ming Dynasty and the holy land of traditional Chinese faith.飞车过大关 (talk) 16:27, 1 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
How do you feel about swapping Yiwu with Jiangyin? Bluevestman (talk) 03:25, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Jiangyin is far more significant in Chinese history than Yiwu. However, since I personally prefer prefecture-level cities over county-level ones, I'll stay neutral on your proposed swap. 飞车过大关 (talk) 06:46, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

  1. Going by User:Feminist's comment: "Despite Yiwu ◎ 5 being under the jurisdiction of the prefecture-level city of Jinhua, Yiwu is more economically notable due to it being where most low-cost goods from China originate. Think Temu or AliExpress for people outside China. In contrast, Jinhua is just a relatively large area administered as a "city" under the Chinese definition. Not saying that Jinhua should not be listed, but Yiwu should remain on the list even if Jinhua is added". Melozone crissalis (talk) 00:46, 27 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

OK, so I would overall like to add cities that appear on this list, however, I'm pretty sure most of the cities that are not on here are Chinese cities. And keep in mind, this list includes county-level cities (Jiangyin and Yiwu), so I don't know how important Liuzhou is beyond "big population" and "prefecture-level".

@Bluevestman: This is already proposed: Wikipedia talk:Vital articles/Level 5/History and geography#Swap some Chinese cities with 4 votes for addition, but it's held up because it's 3-1 for removal. Melozone crissalis (talk) 19:30, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Add Cape Cod, remove Middle Peninsula

edit

Cape Cod Non-vital article was removed in December with a poor rationale, stating it had little importance outside of Massachusetts. But it's actually more important than most of the peninsulas on the list. In any case, certainly more than the Middle Peninsula  5 in Virginia.

  1. Cape Cod has 45 interwikis, ~900 daily pageviews, and 304 page watchers. Middle Peninsula has 5 interwikis, 23 daily pageviews, and fewer than 30 watchers. Melozone crissalis (talk) 07:31, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Add Huai'an

edit

Again, I think we should overall have every city with at least million people on here (and the idea that a big population is a sign of how important a city is not a Western thing, that's an "everywhere but China" thing). The city does look pretty important besides the huge population, with Han Xin  5, Wu Cheng'en  5 and Zhou Enlai  4 being born here.
