New script alert...

edit

@Primefac, Woodensuperman, Frietjes, Phuzion, and Gonnym: and anyone else who uses the Holding Cell... I'm creating a new script. Likely still has a few bugs, but would love some feedback if anyone is interested? User:Zackmann08/scripts/HoldingCellHelper.js (which currently will ONLY function on my sandbox page of User:Zackmann08/holding) is designed to insert a [Del] link after each tfdl line. When clicked, that link will remove the TFDL in question from its current section (Orphan, Convert, etc) and place it in the Ready for deletion section. There are a few features I have already identified:

  1. Will automatically add * ''None currently'' when the tfdl removed is the last in the section.
  2. Handles both Modules for deletion and Templates for deletion
  3. Will remove * ''None currently'' from the bottom of the page if present when adding the latest tfdl to the Ready for deletion section
  4. Will automatically add |delete=1 to the tfdl when moving to the bottom.

Once I have tested it a bit more, I will change the code so that it will actually work on Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Holding cell instead of just my sandbox page. Would love any and all feedback! Anyone has my permission to use my sandbox page at User:Zackmann08/holding to test this script in its current form if interested... Two thoughts:
  • Will it make one edit per line, or can they be grouped? If I'm clearing out (for example) the "To Orphan" section, I tend to not edit that section until all of the templates I'm working on have been dealt with. I'd rather not spam the edit history with multiple single-line edits.
  • Will it be able to just remove a line, for example an admin (e.g. me) who has orphaned a template and deleted it all in one go?
It does sound like a reasonable script idea, just not sure how much (based on the description) I would be using it. Primefac (talk) 13:23, 22 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Primefac: Thanks for the feedback! I was able to implement the second idea of simply removing the line all in one go. As for the first idea, I 100% agree that it would be great to do, I'm just not sure how best to implement it.
I'm going to work on a solution right now that will add a "clear this section" button to remove all tfdls in a section but not sure how to, for example, remove 4 of the 6 in one go... That will require a bit more thought! Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 02:46, 24 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
It might be worth looking at WP:HOTCAT to see how it operates; having a +/- system (or in this case, just a -) where you can select which rows need to be removed and then the script takes care of all of them at once? Not sure how easy it would be to mirror the UI though... Primefac (talk) 12:15, 24 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Primefac: well I took your advice... It works a bit differently than WP:HOTCAT, but you now have checkboxes you can select and then en-masse either mark multiple templates as Ready for deletion or (if you have deleted/redirected the template) simply delete the entries from the page.
Please check out the documentation and feel free to experiment with this! If you have any issues or suggestions for improvement, don't hesitate to let me know! Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 19:44, 25 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Replacing Template:Chinese with Template:Infobox Chinese

edit

I was pointed in this direction over at WP:RM/TR#Administrator needed, re this RM seeking to move another template over Template:Chinese, for which there are over 3000 transclusions still remaining. Some work was already done with Awb by myself and at least one other editor. I am wondering if it would be appropriate for one of the bots at the holding cell page to handle the rest, or if a request should be made over at bot requests? If we can handle this here, I am not sure how or where to put the request and appreciate any help or advice. ASUKITE 15:28, 22 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I have thoughts, which in no particular order... the bots at WP:TFDH are for implementing TFD closes, which this is not. Normally this sort of thing would require a BOTREQ, but I do have a task that could conceivably be used to implement this request. HOWEVER, I am not sure how comfortable I am using it on a poorly-attended RM created by a sockpuppet and would likely challenge the close if I really felt strongly about it. Primefac (talk) 17:11, 22 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
That (the RM itself) was my original problem as well, but as other editors jumped in I figured I'd help out as it seemed uncontroversial at that point. The template replacements that have already occurred thankfully do not need to be reverted if there ever is a dispute, but I am still on the fence about the entire process. Non-talk pages with subpages that are automatically signed

edit

Is there a reason TfD pages are not placed in Category:Non-talk pages with subpages that are automatically signed so edits like this can be automatically fixed? Gonnym (talk) 06:28, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Uh... it is in that cat. I wonder if the bot only goes down one level and we need to add /Log similar to how it appears RFD does it. Primefac (talk) 09:07, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I didn't even notice it was in it. Gonnym (talk) 09:21, 28 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Currently, {{Infobox language family}} is being discussed for merger with {{Infobox language}} under § Template:Infobox language family, however this section link doesn't work because there is an anchor higher on the page: <span id="Template:Infobox_language_family"> because {{Tfd links|Infobox language family}} is used where {{Infobox proto-language}} is being discussed for merger with {{Infobox language family}}.

Why does {{Tfd links}} do that? It's not documented, and looking at the code, I don't see a way to disable it.

As a workaround, I found out I can link to the section by using its "thread ID": § h-Template:Infobox language family-June 5-20260605144700.

It was added in 2008 to facilitate linking to the discussion of a template without having to know the name of the section header, for cases where multiple templates are included in one section. Anomie 17:39, 6 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
The bigger issue here is the improper nomination by User:PPEMES. This should have been one mass nomination, not multiple separate nominations about the same template. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 17:45, 6 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
