Population

edit

Thoughts on adding population to area articles using this tool? https://www.ons.gov.uk/visualisations/customprofiles/build/ Some articles already have it. I've long-disliked the practice of using ward populations as place popultation figures. Everywhere looks like they have populations of around 12,000! Odd, that. In my very brief attempt, I couldn't see a good way to make it report on the specific area that's the article subject unless that's a ward or some such designated unit; I could draw a circle centred on a placename but that's no good for us. Also, I couldn't see how to obtain a URL for my results, so verification wouldn't be as straightforward as we've come to expect. I've seen so many disputes about whether some figures are appropriate to the article(s). NebY (talk) 15:26, 13 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
If this must be used I'd suggest wording such as "The population within distance of feature in year was population. So for Abbey Wood (where it is currently used without explanation) we'd say "The population within 1km of Abbey Wood station in 2024 was 23,929.[1] MRSC (talk) 06:50, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
That would be sensible wording. I'm nervous of the potentially arbitrary choices of distance and feature; stations are a great example, so often being well off-centre of the eponymous neighbourhood or even distinctly outside it (at least, apart from drift caused by people referring to the area round the station by the station's name). Glad you've shown a URL's possible - what a monster! NebY (talk) 17:03, 14 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
