Waiting period for ArbComBlocks and appeals

edit

I've noticed that, in recent ArbCom cases (such as the SchroCat case and the ongoing Michael Jackson case) editors who are indefinitely banned from Wikipedia or are topic banned from certain topic areas can only appeal their bans after six months. This is a pivot from previous remedies along those lines, which set the waiting period at twelve months rather than six. Why the pivot?

(Note 1: I was considering requesting changing previous remedies to halve the limit to six in order to be consistent, but I've decided against it for now, as I believe that's ultimately up to ArbCom's discretion. That, and I've learned my lesson from my failed attempt at requesting that the "indefinitely banned from Wikipedia" and "indefinitely banned from the English Wikipedia" terminology be standardized.)

(Note 2: I could not think of a better place to put this question. If there is a better place for this that slipped my mind, feel free to move this there.) JHD0919 (talk) 13:46, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

I think HouseBlaster likes six months. It used to be six months in the past, and then twelve. It really just depends on who drafts. Dan and I discussed it and it came down to "some arbs have a six month preference and we have no preference at all." ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 14:35, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I prefer six months, which is the number used at WP:SO and Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee/Procedures § Appeals of topic bans. Best, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 16:48, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
I prefer 12, because that's the time after which the user is guaranteed to have a new committee to have an appeal to, perhaps supporting the outcome of a successful one (or also reinforcing the original decision). Izno (talk) 16:55, 11 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
