State and local governments make up the vast majority of governmental districts in the United States, and have tremendous impact on the day-to-day lives of average Americans. However, they are also levels of government tend to be less familiar with, at least in comparison to national politics. Yet, in the US federal system, they are vested with tremendous power. They are also amazingly diverse, reflective of the distinctive historical and cultural forces that have shaped different regions of the United States.
This course will take a deep dive into politics at the local and regional level, with an emphasis on the politics of Seattle, King County, and Washington state. It will combine academic study with hands-on engagement with municipal, county, and state political leaders and bodies, and will push students to "look local" and come to understand the ways urban, county, and state politics differs from what we know about how politics operates at the federal level -- and, hopefully, help illuminate for the students a path for them to have an impact themselves on their community.
