After an introduction to Islam as a religion and its early history, this course provides a survey of the visual arts in the Islamic world from the period of the early caliphates (c. 700) to the heights of the Islamic empires (c. 1700) and an introduction to modern and contemporary art in the Islamic world. As an intermediate-level art history course, it also introduces students to reading art historical scholarship and develops their skills in visual analysis, research, and writing about art. Students will edit an article on a work of Islamic art or an aspect of Islamic art and then use that as a springboard for a research paper.
