The course examines how ‘human rights’ evolve from a more abstract theoretical concept to increasingly compelling and influential moral and legal instruments in confronting human suffering and injustice. While there are several dimensions of rights, in this course, we use slavery, genocide, and environmental rights as the primary mechanisms to examine the broad array of human rights-related topics. By using solutions-oriented instructions like role plays, we expand our familiarity with key scholarly debates and different policy and advocacy strategies regarding human and environmental rights. As previously mentioned, environmental rights are one of the dimensions we will explore in this course. Although climate change and sustainability will be subtly referred to throughout the course, about four weeks will be specifically dedicated to them. During these weeks, we will address topics such as religion and the environmental basis for justice, ecocide and indigenous peoples' rights, rights of the abiotic world, and environments and intergenerational rights. Regarding assessment, I plan to make it heavily project-based. The main task will be for students to develop and host a Wikipedia page that addresses the intersection of climate and environmental sustainability with the concept of intergenerational rights. Students will use the "Deep sea mining" debate as their case study. The hope is that the knowledge generated from this course will be shared with the rest of the world as our own way of contributing to the global discourse on climate change and environmental justice.
