Pride Month 2026

edit
Book display in Central Library

New Zealand Pride Month in 2026 runs throughout March.

Wikipedia is the 8th most visited website in the world but lacks diversity in its editors and its articles. Come along to the Central Library on the 31st March to improve Pride-related reliable information on Wikipedia. PrideNZ have helpfully compiled a list of pages that could be improved or created. New or experienced editors all welcome - biscuits and snacks provided!

What's it about?

edit

An edit-a-thon is an event where volunteer editors tackle a part of Wikipedia that needs improvement. Complete beginners are welcome; training and troubleshooting is provided. All you need to bring is a laptop and any resources you have handy (books, magazines etc)!

This edit-a-thon is being hosted by Tamsin Braisher, the University Wikimedian in Residence, and celebrates Pride Month. We will focus on improving the coverage of related people, places, and things. You don't need to be a expert to take part, anyone can help with editing, researching, proofreading, and adding photos.

When and where

edit
  • Tuesday 31 March 2026, 1:00 – 3:00 pm NZST Seminar Room 2, Central Library (look for the Wikipedia banner)

Timetable

edit

Everyone is welcome to stay for the entire duration or only attend the parts of the workshop that are relevant to you.

  • 1:00 – 1:15 pm - Opening and introductions, account creation
  • 1:15 – 1:45 pm - Wikipedia training - learn how Wikipedia works and how to improve, create, and reference articles, using some of the target edits listed below or your own ideas.
  • 1:45 – 2:45 pm - Make some edits! Either improve existing articles or create a new stub.
  • 2:45 – 3:00 pm – Finishing up, make sure to record what you did on the event page below. Grab a laptop sticker before you go!

To attend

edit
  • The Edit-a-thon is free and open to all.
  • This workshop will be following "friendly space" guidelines; check them out. Harassment and disruption won't be tolerated, online or offline.

People attending

To add yourself to the list, click 'edit source' just above this line, then add an asterisk, a space and three tildes ~~~ This is how we sign our names.

What to bring

edit
  • Laptop and power cord. Laptops are definitely easier to edit on than iPads.
  • Any snacks or drink you want. Snacks will be provided, courtesy of Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • Any resources such as books, journals, magazine or newspaper articles relevant to articles you're interested in - although we also have easy access to the books in the Pride display at the library.
  • Photos you've taken or art that could illustrate articles; you'll learn how to donate these to Wikimedia Commons so other Wikipedia articles can use them.

Preparation

edit
  1. If you're coming, try to create a Wikipedia account beforehand: don't wait until the day to do it! Here's a form you can use if you like. Creating an account makes editing much easier (here's more info on why you should). You'll need to pick a "handle" for your username; you could use your real name, but it's nice to have the option to be a bit anonymous if you want. Here's some advice on picking a username.
  2. The more you prepare, the more you'll be able to get done. You may want to read up on avoiding common mistakes, but Wikipedia has a "don't bite the newbies" policy, and we'll be there to troubleshoot.
  3. Have a think about topics you'd like to work on; do a little research first so you're prepared. You don't have to be an expert; anyone who can do library research and write clearly can help improve Wikipedia. The best candidates for Wikipedia articles are people, places, or things that are "notable". In Wikipedia terms, "notable" people are those who've been covered in a number of reliable independent sources, such as news, books, authoritative websites, or magazine interviews. If you're proposing to create a new Wikipedia article it's important to make sure your subject is "notable"; talk to us if you're not sure – we can help.
  4. If you want to bring photos along and add them to Commons and Wikipedia, they need to be free of any copyright or released under a Creative Commons license that lets anyone use them. (What's Creative Commons?) If not, you must be the creator/copyright holder – ask us if you're not certain what's allowed, and we'll help.

Useful resources

edit
  • The NZ table of the Pride Month display in the library has a number of useful books. You can see if any of them can be used to improve an author or subject's page. In particular "Queer in Aotearoa New Zealand" and "Twenty years on: histories of homosexual law reform in New Zealand" could have info relevant to many pages.
  • New Zealand Sociology did a special issue called Queer in Aotearoa/New Zealand: Research, Theory, and Practice in 2025, which you can access here https://search.informit.org/toc/nzs/40/1.

Outcomes

Information about editing done during this workshop will be aggregated to create event metrics for our report back to funding organisations (e.g. number of editors involved, number of pages edited (see the dashboard here). If you want to know more about this or object to being included in such metrics, please talk to one of the organisers.
