Dissertations

edit

Useful work that could be done at Otago includes uploading the metadata for archaeology theses and dissertations, currently held in the department, to Wikidata to increase accessibility. We could also look at digitising these through the university library. Uploading metadata for dissertations means we then have a dataset to work on that we can improve, e.g. by connecting thesis records to the subjects (places, people, cultures, time periods etc) they cover, as well as items for students and supervisors.

Where dissertations or theses were held by the central university library, and the item was added to the thesis repository, then the data may already have been added to Wikidata as part of the NZ Thesis Project, or may be included in the next update, due to happen this year. There are 69 University of Otago archaeology theses already in Wikidata.

Publications

edit

Another fruitful area of improvement is publications - getting publications into Wikidata, connecting them to authors and main subjects, and then seeing if there are appropriate pages to cite them on in Wikipedia.

The table below shows the most recent publications from the department, as per the noticeboard display. They have all been added to Wikidata and can now be connected to their authors and more easily cited on Wikidata. It might also be useful to check which papers are available full text in OUR Archive and add the Handle identifier.

It would be great to upload some images of archaeologists, especially in the field, and also photographs of archaeological sites. Images for Wikipedia are uploaded with Creative Commons licenses to Wikimedia Commons.
