Hey y'all, mammal list #75 in our perpetual series and rodent list #20: Sigmodontinae. This is our fourth of four lists working through the subfamilies of the oversized family of Cricetidae, and the first of our two problem children lists in Rodentia. The subfamily Sigmodontinae is another grouping of "New World rats and mice", which ignores all the other things that looks like rats/mice that are native to this half of the planet, including other members of Cricetidae in the New World. With 385 species, it's larger than most orders of mammals, with no good subdivision to chop the list up finer. As a result, the IUCN references are to the entire genus, not individual species, as otherwise the page wouldn't fully load due to the hundreds and hundreds of references. As always, the list reflects the scientific consensus as well as the results of prior FLCs. Thanks for reviewing! --PresN 12:34, 26 April 2026 (UTC)[reply]

  • MSW3 has it as N. mussoi, as does the IUCN, which gives the name Musso's fish-eating rat. The ASM says that it was moved to Daptomys and merged with D. peruviensis, but has since split it back out into D. mussoi based on a 2023 paper. The Wikipedia article redirects to D. peruviensis, as people don't always follow the WP:MAMMAL rule (that these lists stick with) of "whatever MSW3 says, unless the IUCN and ASM agree on a change", and also I guess no one has gone back to undo the redirect (I just did). Which, in this case, would be "leave it as N. mussoi". The common name in the list was wrong, though, so fixed.

  • You can switch the IUCN ref of C. instans (and other monotypic taxa) to the species one. I know it would seem a bit inconsistent, but it saves a click.
  • The diet for that species isn't supported by the ref. Maybe it is supported by the Nowak book.
  • It's there at the IUCN cite, under "Habitat and Ecology in detail": "This rodent is poorly known. It is restricted to moist humid cloud forest and co-occurs with the larger Thomasomys hylophilus, which it resembles (Aagaard 1982).     I was confused by the multi-color maps. It's okay, I guess.
  • Standard disclaimer: I don't know what I'm doing, and I mostly AGF on sourcing.
  • Checking the FLC criteria:
  • 1. Nothing is jumping out at me as a prose problem. There are no sortable nonnumeric columns. I sampled the table links.
  • 2. The lead meets WP:LEAD and defines the inclusion criteria.
  • 3a. The list has comprehensive items and annotations.
  • 3c. The list meets requirements as a stand-alone list, it isn't a content fork, and it doesn't largely duplicate another article (that I can find).
  • 4. It is navigable.
  • 5. It meets style requirements.
  • 6. It is stable.

  • File:Delomys dorsalis.jpg: I don't think you need to do anything, but I'll note here for the record that the image has been rotated and cropped from the original.

  • File:Drymoreomys albimaculatus 002.jpg: On the downside, the source link is broken. On the upside, it's a Featured Picture, and there are other WMF links present (which i don't have permission to view) which might suffice.
  • Yeah, if there's a VRT ticket attached then it can be assumed to have been properly verified even if the link has now died.

  • Just a personal preference, but I would remove the dagger symbol from the quotation marks and maybe boldface it instead.
  • I would recommend removing the "in Ecuador" from the notation of the Galápagos Islands.

  • Like the other list, you might wikilink omnivore. (Colombian forest mouse is the first place I see it; I may have missed an earlier usage.)

Same, though Mollusca uses mollusc exclusively? Swapped it, though, I agree it looks odd.
  • Santa Cruz Island --> Island is part of the proper name and should be capitalized.

  • Santiago Island --> Ditto.
