More geography oddities

edit

I'm tidying up some unsourced geography articles again today and I found one I don't know how to deal with. Sputinow, Alberta was an unincorporated hamlet, but the name has been rescinded (see CGNDB). It now appears to be called "Fishing Lake" (see CGNDB). The problem is I'm not sure exactly what happened here... Was the community just renamed to Fishing Lake, or does this have something to do with Fishing Lake Metis Settlement? I'm baffled. Your input would be appreciated. Thanks, MediaKyle (talk) 14:03, 17 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

While I cannot answer the question, I can provide some context. Hamlets are a legal designation. They can be designated by the provincial government OR by the council of either a Municipal District or Specialized Municipality (see Municipal Government Act, RSA 2000, c M-26, s 59). A Metis Settlement (which Sputinow/Fishing Lake is within the Fishing Lake Metis Settlement) does not have the authority to designate a Hamlet (see generally Metis Settlements Act, RSA 2000, c M-14). There is no record designating or dissolving Sputinow/Fishing Lake on the Municipal Boundary Document Search, although those records are not complete.
So if Sputinow/Fishing Lake is a Hamlet, there must be either (1) Ministerial Order or Order in Council creating and possibly dissolving it; or (2) a bylaw from the Municipal District of Bonnyville creating or dissolving it (which would be difficult to find). - Caddyshack01 (talk) 14:52, 27 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sputinow is a locality according to StatCan and Alberta's GNS. See List of localities in Alberta. Hwy43 (talk) 17:53, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I have tidied up the article, I think it can stay. At least it's not misleading now. MediaKyle (talk) 18:00, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hwy43, if you're interested in helping sort out these mysteries, I just created a list of problematic articles here. I will keep it updated as more show up -- a couple editors have been tagging unreferenced articles over the past couple months and I'm doing my best to keep up. Cheers, MediaKyle (talk) 19:00, 2 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

The gods of timing

edit

A propos of nothing, just wanted to share a freaky coincidence. Literally just as the news about Louise Arbour was breaking yesterday, I happened to be working on an article about film and television producer Arnie Gelbart, and adding his Gemini Award win for the television movie Hunt for Justice to the awards table — Hunt for Justice, of course, being a 2005 TV movie about Louise Arbour during her stint as the Yugoslavian war crimes prosecutor. This happened, further, with me having no preexisting knowledge of Hunt for Justice — it was only when I went to wikilink Gelbart's name in 21st Gemini Awards, mere minutes after the news broke, that I saw the full title Hunt for Justice: The Louise Arbour Story instead of the abbreviated title Hunt for Justice.

Needless to say, I immediately created a quick "R with possibilities" redirect from the film title to Arbour, since it is mentioned in her article already, and will be tackling a full article about the film within the next day or two.

My knack for stumbling into freaky coincidences strikes again! Bearcat (talk) 16:16, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Percy Schmeiser

edit

It just came to my attention that last fall, in a little-attended merge discussion that was never publicized to this talk page, Percy Schmeiser got redirected to Monsanto Canada Inc v Schmeiser. The problem, of course, is that regardless of what anybody thinks about whether the defendant in a court case has any standalone notability independent of that case, Percy Schmeiser was also a member of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan from 1967 to 1971, and thus passes WP:NPOL #1 right on its face completely independently of the court case.

The article does need improvement, but it obviously can't be redirected as he passes NPOL. To be marginally fair, his time in politics was practically buried as late-article background information in an article that was written much more from the perspective of "notable as defendant in court case" — so I've added basic information about his time in politics to the introduction, but wanted to ask if anybody else is willing to assist in getting the article up to snuff so that this doesn't happen again. Bearcat (talk) 17:31, 20 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I’ve updated the article somewhat and added new citations. Laylatamar (talk) 13:44, 23 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

it seems in 2018 someone played a prank by adding "Murray" to Mulroney's middle name to suggest she was named after 1970s Canadian songbird Anne Murray. I just reverted it. Wellington Bay (talk) 12:16, 25 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Oliver Grainger

Is this unsourced page really necessary here? Bearian (talk) 12:50, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

I don't see the need for all that detail. 2007 Ontario electoral reform referendum seems to cover the relevant information pretty well. Regards, PKT(alk) 14:04, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yup, completely unnecessary. We're not here to supply such details, that's what the sources are for. And incidentally the article has no sources. Canterbury Tail talk 14:11, 29 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Another time sink discussion are you interested?

edit

Yes 10th time in 20 years but here we go again... this time an RFC so we get as many people unfamiliar with the topic as possible involved....lol Talk:Liberal Party of Canada#RFC: Should the Canadian Liberal Party be listed as a "centre" party?. Moxy🍁 02:32, 31 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

It's hardly an RFC. I'm thinking about removing the banner. MediaKyle (talk) 11:07, 31 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Will be a time sink for many of us. Just for the word "left". As I said before all we can do is try our best to present content and sourcing that educates our readers and allows them access for further research. Thinking what I'll do is write up a paragraph about the political position explaining how they simply go a bit left a lit bit right here and there to garner middle class votes. I think everyone would agree there clearly Canada's centrist party..... but without a doubt they're always described as being more on the left on a general political spectrum. The reason they stay in power is they have the capability of governing from the center left and the center right.... But overall political analysis describes them as a left leaning party overall that happens to be the center in Canada. I think non Canadians have a hard time understanding why the majority of our population are considered moderate - centrist - Amanda Bittner; Royce Koop (1 March 2013). Parties, Elections, and the Future of Canadian Politics. UBC Press. p. 300. ISBN 978-0-7748-2411-8. Domination by the Centre The central anomaly of the Canadian system, and the primary cause of its other peculiarities, has been its historical domination by a party of the centre. In none of the other countries is a centre party even a major player, much less the dominant..... I have always found it weird how new editors try to suppress sources or be more specific cherry pick the ones they like and claiming a majority and consensus. One of the biggest concerns here is there's not one academic publication being presented thus far.Moxy🍁 14:31, 31 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

We appear to be in a slow-moving edit war with minions of a former Supreme Court judge

edit

(That's not a topic I ever thought I would be typing. :) )

Four times now, since May 20, editors have removed content from the article on Rosalie Abella. Some of them have expressly stated they are doing so at the request of Justice Abella; others have removed the same information without identifying themselves. The passage in dispute is a quotation from Avi Lewis, in an op-ed in the Globe and Mail, critiquing Justice Abella's earlier op-ed in the Globe and Mail, about Israel and allegations of genocide. See the series of edits on May 20, May 26, June 4, and now June 9. I have explained at various times that if she has a problem, they could go to the BLP help area; others have explained COI policies and that she could raise the issue at the COI board. But the edits keep coming.

Is there a way to restore it to the last good version before today's edit? And should we request page protection?

In puzzlement, Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 03:44, 10 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Page protection would get keep the IPs out, but is it possible to ban specific users from a specific page?
Justice Abella's personal direction of page edits seems like it should be reported to the SCC as conduct unbecoming one of the justices. G. Timothy Walton (talk) 03:58, 10 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
