Technobabble

Technobabble  (page view stats  edit  talk  history) - 63 daily hits

  1. Oppose - it seems not well known and I never heard such weird stuff. I tend to enjoy seeing popular articles get expanded. Popular article and well-known subject expansion is what I like best. Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 04:21, 16 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - if you don't understand my oppose comment, then ask me. Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 04:21, 16 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • Not meaning to suggest anything but curiosity here, but I'm fairly surprised that you've never heard of this term or subject before. I've heard it referenced (at the least) many hundreds if not thousands of times over the last few decades -- usually with regard to sloppily-written fiction, but also in the vein of fringe science or academia and increasingly in more mundane/day-to-day technical circumstances. My concern is whether or not we can really expand the topic substantially. The articles seems to presently capture the meaning of the concept pretty well (and is decently written, in my opinion). Further, expanding it too far with specifics will, I fear, invite fans of particular sci-fi franchises to start loading it with all manner of fan cruft. Snow talk 05:03, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
      • Which audiences would know such stuff? General audiences? Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 05:49, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
        • Yes, I'd say general audiences are familiar with the phenomena to varying extents, though certainly it is a more pronounced phenomena in areas of speculative fiction (and science fiction in particular).
But with regard to sourcing, we might actually find more coverage of the topic in sources regarding psuedo-science and fringe (or just poorly approached) academia, where it has increasingly become a concern, and not just in highly technical fields -- in the last couple of decades some areas the social sciences have been noted for having become increasingly inundated with work that relies on highly insular and often borderline-indecipherable idiolects that attempt to up-jump pet theories (or the impression of empirical rigor) via the application of needlessly complex jargon. The cognitive scientist/popular science writer Steven Pinker has spoken on this topic at length (most notably in The Blank Slate and more recently in The Sense of Style), as have other academics. Mind you, this is a somewhat different animal from either a fiction writer using convenient language without having much understanding of the science upon which it refers, or a dubious application of scientific language that garners support amongst non-expert enthusiasts of some fringe theory, but the contexts are related and the term "technobabble" itself can be (and has been) applied to all three varieties of scenario.
Again, I don't know that I think the article requires a great deal of attention just now -- arguably the academic context could be explored in more detail, but that's going to require careful sourcing and wording to avoid WP:OR concerns. But just by way of answering your question, I think the term has a fair degree of recognition. Snow talk 08:14, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  1. Support - although the content is all right, the reference style needs total updating. Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 04:17, 16 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Oppose – fixing reference styles is out of scope of this project -- CFCF 🍌 (email) 10:37, 13 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Comment @CFCF: Fixing referencing styles is not out of scope. TAFI's scope is literally "improve articles to Good article, Featured article or Featured list quality" – all of which have standards for referencing - Evad37 [talk] 07:39, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well to rephrase it, I think we're going to get fewer volunteers when the work largely consists of checking old content instead of writing new content. I'm willing to support the entry if it can be shown or even suggested that the article can be improved in other ways. -- CFCF 🍌 (email) 08:06, 14 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
