History
editVAST Data was founded in 2016 by Renen Hallak, the former head of R&D at XtremIO (acquired in 2012 by Dell EMC),[7][8] Shachar Fienblit, formerly of Kaminario, and Jeff Denworth, formerly of CTERA Networks.[9][10] Mike Wing, formerly of Dell EMC, serves as company president.[10][11][12] In 2019 VAST emerged from stealth mode, announcing $80 million of funding and the launch of its data storage software built on a new distributed systems architecture called DASE (Disaggregated and Shared Everything).[13][9]
VAST ranked No. 5 on the 2022 Deloitte Technology Fast 500[14] and No. 3 on the 2023 Financial Times list of The Americas’ Fastest-Growing Companies.[15] In 2023 VAST surpassed $1 billion in cumulative software bookings and $200 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR).[16][17][18] In 2024 VAST was included in the Forbes Cloud 100 and was named a leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for File and Object Storage Platforms.[1]
In 2025 VAST was named to the CNBC Disruptor 50[19] and the Forbes AI 50,[20][21] and reached $2 billion in cumulative software bookings.[22] In April 2026 VAST surpassed $4 billion in cumulative bookings and ended the previous fiscal year with more than $500 million in committed annual recurring revenue (CARR).[23][24] The company also delivered a “Rule of X” score of 228% for the previous fiscal year.[25][26]
VAST partners with several systems technology vendors, including Arista, Cisco, Equinix, HPE, Lenovo, NVIDIA, and Supermicro.[27][28][29]

editIn 2016, VAST raised $15 million in Series A funding led by 83North and Norwest Venture Partners. In 2018, the company raised an additional $25 million in a Series A1 round led by Dell Technologies Capital alongside 83North and Norwest Venture Partners. In 2019, VAST secured $40 million in Series B funding led by Greenfield Partners, followed by a $100 million Series C round in 2020 led by Next47. In 2021, the company raised $83 million in Series D funding led by Tiger Global Management that valued the company at $3.7 billion. In 2023, VAST completed a $118 million Series E round led by Fidelity Management and Research Company, raising the company valuation to over $9 billion. In 2026, the company raised approximately $1 billion in Series F financing led by Drive Capital and Access Industries at a new valuation of $30 billion.[30][31]

editThe VAST AI Operating System is a data platform that ingests data from distributed sources, applies AI-based metadata enrichment, and supports automated agent-based processing pipelines.[32] It includes several components:
- VAST DataStore (formerly Universal Storage), an unstructured data storage service
- VAST DataBase, a database management system (DBMS) that combines features of a traditional database, data warehouse, and data lake
- VAST DataEngine, a global function execution engine
- VAST DataSpace, a global namespace that allows each location to store, retrieve, and process data
- VAST InsightEngine, developed in partnership with NVIDIA, a real-time retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) service[33]
- VAST AgentEngine, an AI agent deployment and orchestration system
- VAST SyncEngine, a tool for ingesting, cataloging, and providing access to unstructured data from distributed sources for use in AI applications[34]
The platform can be deployed in on-premises data centers, public clouds, and edge environments, and is offered as a subscription-based service.[35]
