Information icon Hello, I'm Drm310. An edit that you recently made to User:Ttsmith21/sandbox seemed to be generated using a large language model (an "AI chatbot" or other application using such technology). Text produced by these applications can be unsuitable for an encyclopedia, and output must be carefully checked. Your edit may have been reverted. If you want to practice editing, please use your sandbox. If you think a mistake was made, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Hello- I’m still learning wikipedia. I did use AI to help put it into wiki formatting, and rewrite in the proper, neutral tone I thought wikipedia required. I also used it to help with the background research and citations.
After your message, I’m trying to educate myself on AI use on wikipedia. From your message, it doesn’t sound like its banned. Is formatting and rewriting for neutral tone a frowned upon use, or ok use? It did the formatting way better and faster than I know how. It wasn’t perfect though, and I was trying to debug.
Is my sandbox an OK place to play with this stuff and iron out articles before submitting them for publishing? Ttsmith21 (talk) 00:30, 29 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes, your sandbox is an acceptable place to experiment. I merely placed that notice (which is the pre-formatted message {{uw-ai1}}) so that you would become aware about Wikipedia's stance on the use of AI. Wikipedia now has a criteria to "speedy delete" (immediately delete without discussion) pages that have been generated by a LLM without human review (WP:G15). It's better for you to know about it now, so that you can review your work before attempting to publish it. I've seen lots of new editors blindly publish AI-generated articles, which then get deleted, and they get upset because they don't understand why. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 14:51, 30 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the heads up! I wont get mad if I make a mistake. I definitely want to make sure its of high quality and acceptable to wikipedia standards, which is ironically why I used AI!
The article is not done, but is there anything about the quality of the article now that would cause it to get deleted? how do I understand the parts of AI use that are frowned upon. I read some guidelines, but its unclear to me that my article would be rejected. It seems like its ok to use for formatting and tone, so long as its “human in the loop” and the person is actually putting in work insuring the content and references are right. It seems like you dont want people creating so much garbage so fast with AI, editors cant keep up with it. Do I have that right?
Posting on wikipedia is intimidating! Ttsmith21 (talk) 15:20, 30 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
Nothing content-wise seems alarming, so I wouldn't worry about it being deleted immediately. However, the formatting deviates from Wikipedia's manual of style somewhat, particularly the section headings. Those have the telltale signs of being AI generated. Please have a look at Help:Introduction to the Manual of Style and make a few more modifications. --Drm310 🍁 (talk) 13:54, 31 August 2025 (UTC)Reply
