Cantonese vs Mandarin
editLai Ka-ying is from Hong Kong, so we should use her Cantonese name, not Mandarin (Li Jiaying). See WP:ZHNAME. Asamboi (talk) 08:45, 23 May 2026 (UTC)
- There is also no such thing as a "Hong Kong citizen", see Right of abode in Hong Kong. Please tread a little more carefully with this article. Asamboi (talk) 22:33, 24 May 2026 (UTC)
- The Hongkongers page lists Hong Kong citizen as one of the proper alternate forms. I checked with that page before making that change. Please, again, assume good faith. In my opinion, I have been treading carefully. RickyCourtney (talk) 01:18, 25 May 2026 (UTC)
- I know you're acting with good faith, but this really is a minefield and you've unintentionally stepped in a couple already (Mandarin vs Cantonese names, colony vs territory, and now this). The Hongkongers page specifically notes that while the term "Hong Kong citizen" is used, it is a "colloquialism" and that the government of Hong Kong does not confer "citizenship". - Trying to avoid all land mines would against the ethos of being bold in editing. That’s what I’m doing here. If I see something awkwardly worded, I’m going to be bold and improve it, while also understanding that my edits may be changed or reverted if I’ve gone too far, or stepped on a land mine as you put it, that’s part of the process. Great America VTA
editI completely understand the Reliable Source edict and know my word is not deemed a reliable, but I couldn't find an announcement of the platform policy change at the Great America VTA stop that you marked as needing citation. I commute through the stop somewhat regularly and can attest to the change. I normally would let it go, but it is useful information for someone new to the station. It might stay if it is unchallenged. Would you consider removing the cn template? --John (User:Jwy/talk) 01:30, 9 June 2026 (UTC)
- I tweaked the wording. Hopefully that's a better middle ground. RickyCourtney (talk) 02:57, 9 June 2026 (UTC)
- Very clever. Thanks. --John (User:Jwy/talk) 14:57, 9 June 2026 (UTC)
