Help desk

What role does your bot play, in making help desk edits like this one?

The edit includes a "Special:Diff/" link in the subheading; help desk subheadings should not include links.

The link in ''[[User:Qwerfjkl (bot)|Reference]] help requested.'' is also suboptimal, as the target and purpose are not clear to anyone who might be contemplating using the link. Why is it there at all?

Please consider modifying the bot's output accordingly. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:54, 13 July 2025 (UTC)

Pigsonthewing, the notices the bot leaves use User:Qwerfjkl (bot)/inform/middle which includes a preload for the help desk, at User:Qwerfjkl (bot)/helpform. Feel free to edit either as you wish. GoingBatty made the preload and seems to have copied it from User:ReferenceBot/helpform.
help desk subheadings should not include links. - why is this (and where does it say so)? Qwerfjkltalk 18:53, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
Thank you. I'm reluctant to edit those preloads as I'm still not clear on the purpose of the links.
For the latter question, see: MOS:NOSECTIONLINKS. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:06, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing, I'm pretty sure it serves no purpose. Re MOS:NOSECTIONLINKS, I am aware (or the reason is obvious) for every other item there, but I have never heard of a technical reason for not using links in section headers, and it's fairly frequently done (not in mainspace). Qwerfjkltalk 11:06, 15 July 2025 (UTC)

I am running into issues editing the page further. It is in good shape, but I have not finished proofing it. What would you recommend for getting pass teh technical issues I am having,

Is it in good enough shape for a review?

Administrator Elections | Discussion phase

Administrator Elections | Discussion phase

The discussion phase of the July 2025 administrator elections is officially open. As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • July 18–22 - Discussion phase (we are here)
  • July 23–29 - SecurePoll voting phase
  • July 30–c. Aug 3 - Scrutineering phase

We are currently in the discussion phase. The candidate subpages are open to questions and comments from everyone, in the same style as a request for adminship. You may discuss the candidates at Wikipedia:Administrator elections/July 2025/Discussion phase.

On July 23, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close again to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. You can see who voted, but not who they voted for. Please note that the vote totals cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see an individual candidate's totals during the election. You must be extended confirmed to vote.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which will last approximately four days, or perhaps a little longer. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the results page (you may want to watchlist this page) and transcluded to the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, a candidate must have received at least 70.0% support, calculated as Support / (Support + Oppose), and must also have received a minimum of 20 support votes. Because this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation. Happy electing.

Wrap in IIFE?

@Qwerfjkl. Hey there. I notice this user script introduces some variables into the global namespace such as config. This recently caused a bug in another user script (see here). I think this could be easily fixed if you wrapped your code in an IIFE. That is, just add (function() { to the top and }()); to the bottom. Would you be willing to give that a try? Thanks. –Novem Linguae (talk) 09:22, 22 July 2025 (UTC)

Issues with renaming?

Hi. I'm having some issues with mass renaming things. I've gotten the hang of the general process, but whenever I submit to CFD, the proposal isn't in the format of "propose renaming X to Y", but instead just "propose X" (example). In cases like those, I have to manually add the "to Y" part (example), which can be tedious. Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is it a problem on the script's end? Errors aside, thanks for making the script! It's very helpful! - OpalYosutebitotalk』 『articles I want to eat22:58, 9 July 2025 (UTC)

== Question from SBG2025 (14:32, 25 July 2025) == WRONG BIO

Hi! I want to correct a biography that someone wrote bout me. A lot of informations are wrong and also damage my image. How can I fix it? Thanks! --SBG2025 (talk) 14:32, 25 July 2025 (UTC)

Question from SBG2025 (15:01, 25 July 2025)

Hi!

I hope this message finds you well.

I am reaching out to kindly request corrections and updates to a biography that has been published about me. This is not the first time I have attempted to address these concerns, and I appreciate your attention to the matter.

There are several inaccuracies and omissions in the current biography:

My correct date of birth is October 10, not October 30. I was born in Varese, not in Malnate. (There is no hospital in Malnate.) I respectfully ask that my year of birth be removed. In my profession as an actress, disclosing one's exact age can unintentionally limit casting opportunities and does not accurately reflect one’s range or abilities. I would also like to request the removal of any information regarding the documentation used for my working visa, as this is personal and sensitive, particularly while I am in the process of applying for a Green Card. The works listed as my most significant are outdated and do not reflect my recent or most impactful projects, especially those completed since relocating from Italy. It is also incorrect to state that I worked with Jon Fosse. While I performed in a production of Sonno, a play written by Fosse, the direction was by Valerio Binasco. The production received the Premio della Critica in 2010. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, I invite you to consult the full biography available on my official website: https://silviabottini.com/bio/

Thank you very much for your time and understanding.

I sincerely appreciate your efforts in ensuring the accuracy and professionalism of the information being shared.

Warm regards,

Silvia Bottini --SBG2025 (talk) 15:01, 25 July 2025 (UTC)

SBG2025, our main policy on this matter is Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons. Regarding using your website as a source, the policy on this is Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons#Using the subject as a self-published source. In general, it wouldn't be considered reliable, but it can be used for some information.
  • My correct date of birth is October 10, not October 30 - the source in the article is https://web.archive.org/web/20241205002505/https://www.moviefone.com/celebrity/silvia-bottini/g9imEUUthbSl4hopXVH5T1/main/ which does indeed say you were born on the 30th October. In this case, you would not count as a reasonable source for this matter (because unfortunately people can lie about their age). However, per Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons#Privacy of personal information and using primary sources, If a subject complains about our inclusion of their date of birth, or the person is borderline notable, err on the side of caution and simply list the year, provided that there is a reliable source for it. Accordingly I will remove the month and day.
  • I was born in Varese, not in Malnate. Malnate is in Varese. In any case I have removed it from the article.
  • I respectfully ask that my year of birth be removed. To my knowledge, the most I can do is remove the day and month - but I'm not entirely sure on this, so you may wish to ask at the Teahouse for further help on this.
  • I would also like to request the removal of any information regarding the documentation used for my working visa, as this is personal and sensitive, particularly while I am in the process of applying for a Green Card. It is public information, see https://story.californiasunday.com/escape-your-meme/. However, as it's not particularly relevant to the article, I have removed it.
  • The works listed as my most significant are outdated and do not reflect my recent or most impactful projects, especially those completed since relocating from Italy. - please submit an edit request with what you would like to change it to (and make sure to mention you are the subject of the article in the request).
  • It is also incorrect to state that I worked with Jon Fosse. While I performed in a production of Sonno, a play written by Fosse, the direction was by Valerio Binasco. - it does not say you worked with Jon Fosse. It says you were cast in Fosse's Sonno (I have now corrected it), i.e. Sonno written by Fosse.
  • The production received the Premio della Critica in 2010. If you can provide a source for this that is independent of you, I will happily add this to the article.

Wiki scientific page has inaccurate information

I am a self-published author and I teach my book on evolution in various senior colleges at the under graduate level. I have run across a particular Wiki page on Paul MacLean's triune brain theory that is very biased and it relies on journal articles that I have found to also be suspect.

My main concern is that both the wiki and the articles cited use "straw man" arguments that basically attribute to MacLean concepts that he does not state in his work, and then they attack these arguments. I went in and made some modifications that were then basically just over-ridden. I would like to see the wiki authors actually cite MacLean's work for their arguments, and not use their own opinions or the opinions of journal authors (who also mislead readers) with inaccurate comments on MacLeans - The Triune Brain in Evolution. Is there an impartial arbitrator that can be used to sort this out? Thanks. 71.169.191.235 (talk) 11:26, 28 July 2025 (UTC)

71.169.191.235, can I safely assume that you are the editor User:Mainelyevolution? You have never edited the article on this IP account.
In general, Wikipedia articles rely on secondary sources, whereas The Triune Brain in Evolution would be a primary source. If you can find some reliable secondary sources, it would probably be best to first discuss their addition on the talk page. Qwerfjkltalk 16:05, 28 July 2025 (UTC)

I got a COI tag and AfD nomination for the MobileX page I created. I made some edits and posted responses. Is there anything else you would suggest me to do? --Tbenny (talk) 20:56, 29 July 2025 (UTC)

Tbenny, you appear to have quite an obvious COI (highlighting it as one of the best eSIM-based carriers for value-conscious users seeking flexible plans without contracts or overage fees) - you have denied having a COI. It does not help your case for the article if you are dishonest. Qwerfjkltalk 18:22, 4 August 2025 (UTC)
Thank you for the feedback! I want to clarify again that I have no affiliation with the company and no conflict of interest. I completely understand how the way the PCMag quote was framed could read as overly promotional, and I’ve made further revisions to align more closely with the tone and sourcing style used for similar entries. Would appreciate any additional feedback you may have to share to ensure this article meets Wikipedia's standards. Tbenny (talk) 00:17, 5 August 2025 (UTC)

Question from DWRowlands (09:14, 31 July 2025)

Hi! I'm not entirely sure if this counts as a question, but I'm an American urban geographer who recently moved to the Netherlands, and I'm interested in working on adding/expanding articles about Dutch cities and public transportation, at least partly by translating articles from Dutch. So any advice on resources/connections that would be useful for that would be appreciated. I gather I should start by working on copy-editing existing articles first, though? --DWRowlands (talk) 09:14, 31 July 2025 (UTC)

DWRowlands, I would recommend first editing articles in your field of interest to get a feel for how they're structured and how Wikipedia articles are generally written, as you say. You can try this search for public transport (or Category:Public transport in the Netherlands) and Category:Cities in the Netherlands for some articles.
If you want to try translation, you can also expand existing articles with content from the Dutch Wikipedia - see Help:Translation for details on translation. You could try articles from this search e.g. add information from nl:Station Duiven to Duiven railway station. Let me know if you have any other questions/need any more help. Qwerfjkltalk 18:39, 4 August 2025 (UTC)
Thanks! I will take a look once I have internet in my new apartment: that is taking painfully long to set up, and until it's set up, my time to do anything online is very limited... DWRowlands (talk) 07:59, 7 August 2025 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – August 2025

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2025).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, G15, has been enacted. It applies to pages generated by a large language model (LLM) without human review.
  • Following a request for comment, there is a new policy outlining the granting of permissions to view the IP addresses of temporary accounts. Temporary account deployment on the English Wikipedia is currently scheduled for September 2025, and editors can request access to the permission ahead of time. Admins are encouraged to keep an eye on the request page; there will likely be a flood of editors requesting the permission when they realize they can no longer see IP addresses.
