Hello Plasticwonder,
Thank you very much for your help and guidance. In fact, I had never edited a Wikipedia article till yesterday. I know a lot of knowledge about certain topics (of course, about Karlans) and I write well, so I thought that's all it took. But there is way more to Wikipedia than I realized. I spent a lot of time today learning about and planning to do it in the next few days. Once again, sorry for being so wobbly in my first attempt :).

“Karlani” is not the most accurate designation for this tribal confederacy. The term reflects an Indic exonym rather than the indigenous Pashtun form. The confederacy is traditionally known among Pashtuns as Karlan (or Kārlāṇ), and the use of Karlani represents a later external linguistic adaptation rather than the native ethnonym. Hello Nil,
Hope this message finds you well. Yes, I am disappointed that my article draft was declined, however, since I am brand new to Wikipedia and still learning the basics, it is ok for now. However, I do want to have a Wikipedia profile, as I believe it will add more credibility and gravitas to my profile.
Can you please be specific regarding the points that got my article decline? And also, can you please give me some tips for revision?
Thank you Nil,
Adam Akarlan (talk) 08:02, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi Adam, my first recommendation would be to read WP:YOURSELF – Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and not a social networking site, which means that you won't have any ownership or control over the page about you.
My second recommendation would be to read WP:NBIO, which sets out our eligibility criteria ("notability") for articles about people. 99.99% of people will never be "notable" enough by Wikipedia's standards, and you'll need to demonstrate that you do meet this criteria before an article about you could be published. Wikipedia isn't the place for adding more credibility and gravitas to your profile; this you'll need to achieve for yourself off wikipedia. In solidarity, nil nz 21:54, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Introduction to contentious topics

edit

You have recently edited a page related to the region of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal), including but not limited to history, politics, ethnicity, and social groups, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia's norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Additionally, you must be logged in, have 500 edits, and have an account age of 30 days in order to make edits related to two subtopics: (1) Indian military history, or (2) caste-related topics in South Asia.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template. Sarsenethe/they•(talk) 07:56, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Why the English Spelling Pashtu and not Pashto

edit

Phonological Accuracy and the Need for a Standard Roman Orthography

There are many accepted ways to Romanize the name of the language—Pashto, Pashtu, Pakhto, Pakhtu, Pukhto, Pushto, and others. Such variation is neither unusual nor problematic; rather, it reflects the rich dialectal diversity of the language and the historical challenges of representing its sounds through the Latin alphabet. No single spelling can perfectly capture the dialectal diversity found among Pashtu speakers.

While both Pashto and Pashtu are well-established English spellings, a linguistic analysis suggests that Pashtu is the more appropriate form. It better reflects the language's phonological reality, accommodates dialectal diversity, and maintains greater consistency with the ethnonym Pashtun, thereby providing a more coherent representation of the language and its speakers.

In many dialects, the final vowel of the language's name is not pronounced as a pure English-style long “o.” Instead, it is often realized as a range of rounded vowel sounds approximating IPA [ɵ], [o], [u], and related phonetic variants. These differences belong to the realm of phonetic realization—the precise sounds produced by speakers in particular dialects.

When discussing a language as a whole, however, linguists often employ broad phonological representation rather than narrow phonetic transcription (implied by the spelling Pashto). Broad representation seeks to identify the underlying sound category shared across dialects rather than focusing on every local pronunciation. From this perspective, the final vowel of Pashtu is more accurately represented by the phoneme /ʊ/, the near-close near-back rounded vowel commonly known as the “horseshoe u.”

/ʊ/

This sound occupies a position between the English vowels heard in words such as foot, book, and put. Importantly, it possesses a dynamic quality that is not fully conveyed by the letter "o". The spelling Pashtu therefore serves as a closer approximation of the underlying phonological reality found across numerous native pronunciations.

The argument becomes even stronger when one considers the ethnonym. The people who speak the language are universally known in English as Pashtuns, not Pashtons. The presence of u in Pashtun implicitly acknowledges the same underlying vowel quality that many speakers hear in the language's name itself. To write Pashtun for the people but Pashto for the language introduces an inconsistency that has little linguistic justification.

By contrast, the pair Pashtun and Pashtu forms a coherent and transparent relationship. The language and its speakers share a common root, a common phonological structure, and a common orthographic representation. This consistency enhances clarity, reinforces the connection between language and people, and better reflects native speech patterns.

The case for Pashtu is therefore not an argument against the legitimacy of the spelling Pashto. Rather, it is an argument for a spelling that is more closely aligned with phonological principles, dialectal inclusivity, and internal consistency. While Pashto remains the conventional spelling in English-language scholarship, Pashtu represents a linguistically defensible alternative—one that recognizes the diversity of native pronunciations while preserving the unity of the language they represent.

If the purpose of romanization is not merely to preserve convention but also to reflect linguistic reality, then Pashtu deserves serious consideration as a standard form. It is not a departure from the language's identity; it is an attempt to represent that identity more faithfully. PX2N (talk) 07:37, 7 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

LLM?

Hi, are you using LLM or some other AI-based tool to generate these drafts, some of which I've just declined? -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 14:11, 7 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for reading and your suggestion on the articles I recently submitted on Wikipedia. I am brand new to Wikipedia. I enjoyed reading your description of yourself and I can relate to what you have written. I have been working in the linguistics/languages field for over a decade now, and I have kept a journal since I was a kid, and I write about all sorts of things. Anyway, a lot of the articles I have submitted are based on personal observations, exposure, training and reading. However, after writing the best draft, I did deploy AI to come up with the final draft. Perhaps that's not a Wikipedia-n thing to do. Any guidance on how to move forward? Hi @PX2N, happy to have you aboard and a belated Welcome to Wikipedia! Let me warn you that you've definitely decided to jump off the deep the end, as writing an article from scratch is often referred to as one of the most difficult things to do on the project, epically as a new editor. And there are a couple problems you'll experience in general with your current plan, but nothing insurmountable.
Regarding how you are contributing text: "the articles I have submitted are based on:"
  • "personal observations, exposure"  Not good, as all of the writing on Wikipedia needs to come from a published reliable source
  • "training"  Okay, if you can cite to reliable sources such as university textbooks
  • "and reading"  Great, just remember to include a citation, but this is exactly what we look for in good contributions.
Consider the guidance at Help:Referencing for beginners. This is a good introductory guide to references and how to produce them. We also have explanitory guidance or policy pages for most things on Wikipedia. Consider Wikipedia:Verifiability, the policy which states everything must be referenced. Wikipedia:Reliable sources discusses what makes a source reliable and the instances it can be used. Start there, and you will see many blue links that discuss a lot of the aspects of the project.
Regarding using an large language model, or "AI chatbot"; this is strongly discouraged in both writing new content and using it to communicate with other users. There's a variety of reasons for each, but it comes done to not being able to trust the output and the limitations in communication. The policy WP:NEWLLM and the section § See also have a lot more to say about it. You can use it to check small things like grammar or help your phrasing, but it's best not to use them in general.
For most things as you're getting started, the Help:Introduction will cover 95% of what you need to get started and the Wikipedia:Teahouse will be able to answer the rest of your questions. If you're looking for other things to do that will definitely have an easier learning curve to jump into than a new article, the Wikipedia:Task Center has some great places to start. Consider picking an area that interests you and see if you can help fix some problems. § Fact-Checking and § Fact-Checking are what got me into editing.
Let me know if there's anything else I can help with. Happy editing! Bobby Cohn 🍁 (talk) 23:26, 7 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much Bobby for such a comprehensive and thoughtful reply!
I want to clarify something here. By Personal observations and exposure, I mean, I have spent a significant amount of time among folks who speak Pashtu as their mother tongue, I have native level command of two very distinct dialects of Pashtu and have extensive exposure to several other dialects. I have studied the language, in addition to studying and having a native level/professional command of its neighboring languages. And since I have had exposure to all these languages throughout my lifetime, therefore, I used the phrase "personal observations and exposure". PX2N (talk) 00:00, 8 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Glad to hear it was useful!
If you have published anything, then you can cite to those, we do have guidance on WP:SELFCITE about using your own work and as long as it is acceptable and within reason. The difficulty arises when you haven't published, then the fear is it drifts into Wikipedia:Original research territory. Not that I doubt your experiences, but the rule of thumb is someone should be able to double check (e.g.: borrowing a book from the library, reading a journal article) using a citation behind anything written on the project. Without a citation to a reliable source, it would then be a failure of the WP:V as I mentioned previously.
For example, the biographer Robert Caro could use any of his four books to write about Lyndon B. Johnson's early life and career, but couldn't contribute to the article Presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson without first publishing and then citing his fifth book (he better hurry up and publish it, I'm waiting).
But if you don't have those sources, that's okay. Doing research and finding citations is an acceptable way to contribute, and ensures that the content you do add isn't challenged and removed by our procedure WP:PROVEIT.
Hope that helps, Bobby Cohn 🍁 (talk) 00:28, 8 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Bobby, again, I am gratefully thankful for your reply. I am published in reputable journals, however, that was from the early part of my career which was in cancer research. However, I have gone through the rigor of academic/scientific research, peer review and objective/scientific writing, which I think is a good thing and a bad thing when it comes to Wikipedia. I have been writing on language/linguistics related topics for a long time and have been using my writing as my "abstracts" for the pieces I have submitted. However, I also understand that my approach might be too academic and scholarly, and not Wikipedia like. I have become aware of that (thanks to your and some other editors) and am going to tackle that approach, while moving forward. PX2N (talk) 00:51, 8 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
