Re: Image/File

They should be "File:", not "Image:", as of a few months ago. It's a pretty recent thing, but it was done because some items in the Image: namespace are actually videos, PDF documents, etc. I don't think the Checklinks tool changes this; it didn't do that for me on articles that had Image:. DA and dates

Hello... just thought I'd let you know that I've tweaked your edit to the "for" side. As it turns out, the language had already been incorporated into a sentence at the end of the paragraph preceding where you wrote it, so I have removed yours. (I've also rewritten the original one to use more of the same language that you used.) I hope this works for you. Cheers. --Ckatzchatspy 21:43, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Capitalisation in tables

In this edit to Wii Balance Board, you capitalised nigh on every attribute in the article. Now, the attributes work either way, but I've never come across anyone purposefully capitalising them before. Was this just a design decision or is there a benefit to using capitalised arguments? I ask because I've used lowercase up to now and wondered if I'm doing right... Greg Tyler (t c) 21:58, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for inquiring. I'm pretty sure that you've been doing fine with lowercase. I believe I just used wikEd's "Fix basic, HTML, capitalization" function because I was trying to clean up the table, but I probably should have limited the cleanup to a selection. I considered changing the case back, but seeing no harm, I just left it as the script made it. I'll change it back if you think all should be lowercase for consistency among articles. —Ost (talk) 22:22, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
Oh, cool. That makes sense. Thanks for explaining. Greg Tyler (t c) 08:38, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

I have fixed the problem, it was a problem with some code failing incorrectly. Also, you should avoid changing URLs as you'll kill any archive history that you might get from the Wayback Machine or WebCite. Remember there's nothing wrong with (HTTP) redirects. — Dispenser 17:41, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Rather sloppy of me :-(. Anyway, fixed now and another bug with matching the link correctly. This was part of a update yesterday to auto-recognize archive services when they're put in as regular replacements. The idea I have for the future interface is a task panel on the left with commons actions, link recovery quick links, and search moved there. The problem with the interface so far been that there's hasn't been enough space, but the panel should solve that and bring the drop down out. 132.230.61.78 (talk) 19:10, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Nintendo task force membership update

It's that time again to update membership status with the Nintendo task force, which we try to do every 3-4 months to keep our membership up-to-date.

All participants have been placed on an "Inactive participants" list. To confirm that you're still a member of the Nintendo task force, simply go to Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Nintendo#Members and move your name from the "Inactive participants" list to the bottom of the "Active participants" list. If you are no longer an active member in the task force, you may simply remove your name altogether. After 1 month, on October 1, all entries under the "Inactive participants" list will be removed. Hopefully you can stay with us and continue to work on Nintendo-related articles. Regards, MuZemike 17:56, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

Bad edit

Your edit to List of programs broadcast by Cartoon Network redirect a dead link to another dead link and screws up the category at the bottom. Please be more careful when using tools. — Dispenser 21:50, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Sorry. I had meant to mark that as a dead link and must have clicked off the combobox wrong. I really would have preferred to use reflinks instead of checklinks there if the tool would have let me since I was only trying to quickly title the bottom link before my other edits. But I don't see what you're talking about with screwing up the category; the categories show the same for me between edits and the only change after mine was to add another show, not to cleanup a Category or mark the link dead. —Ost (talk) 22:08, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
The sort key changed from " " (putting it at the top of the category) to "Cartoon Network original programs" (putting it at C). — Dispenser 22:17, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
I don't know how I missed that. It was my wikEd fix that removed the space and the name gets inserted upon save. I am sorry; I've made that mistake before and I should have caught it. I fixed it now. Thanks for letting me know. —Ost (talk) 12:35, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

You might have missed something.

Just a heads up: fixing misspellings of words which shouldn't be in the article should set off alarm bells. :) Protonk (talk) 17:05, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't read the article, I'm using AWB and just wanted to fix the spelling. Thanks for letting me know. At least the secondary effect of hitting your watchlist so you could see the old vandalism isn't bad. —Ost (talk) 17:58, 16 September 2009 (UTC)
That's precisely what I was gonna come back and say. It's on my watchlist from some really weird socking/pov business a few months ago and I wouldn't have noticed the change without that odd edit summary in the watchlist. No worries. Protonk (talk) 18:03, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Anime

I've reverted your change to Anime. These are titles of webpages and should be left as they are. One in particular had a {{sic}} directly after it. —Farix (t | c) 19:35, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

The same applies to Editing of anime in American distribution. You need to go back and recheck that you did not inappropriately change titles to webpages or other articles. —Farix (t | c) 19:38, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
According to WP:MOS:QUOTE and a recent discussion at WT:POKE, "[t]rivial spelling or typographical errors should be silently corrected". I know that {{sic}} was present, but I was just correcting what I would consider a trivial spelling error and removing the template. I understand your concern, but I think the edits were in line MoS. —Ost (talk) 20:15, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
No they are not. Misspellings in article titles or webpage titles should not be "corrected", but preserved as is. These are titles and not quotes, so they don't fall under WP:MOSQUOTE. —Farix (t | c) 20:23, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
The title is being reprinted in this work, so I would think that makes it a quotation of the title. Do you know of a guideline that requires titles to be written letter for letter? If so, I would like to read it so I can follow it. If these spelling errors should indeed be left unchanged, I suggest {{sic}} be used around every mispelled title including Pokemon, not just one instance in an article as your revert leaves Anime. —Ost (talk) 20:33, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
A title is not the same as a quote. And neither WP:EL or any of the citation guidelines allow for misspellings of titles to be corrected. It will cause confusion with the reader of they follow the link an find that the actual title of the page is not the same as the one given by Wikipedia. —Farix (t | c) 20:47, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
Again, I understand your point, but I still don't see anything in the guidelines to back it up. If I am missing the section, please link me to it. I'm only correcting an accent over an "e". I hardly think it will cause confusion to someone that goes to the page and does not see the accent. You may be right, but I would like to see more proof than your word. If we are able to change a title to remove CAPS, I would think correcting a missing accent would be allowed. And without a specific policy or guideline addressing cited titles, I think MOS:QUOTE comes closest. I would be happy to take this discussion elsewhere—perhaps WP:MOS and WP:CITE—to get additional opinions. —Ost (talk) 21:03, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Thank you ....

.... for fixing the Libya page vandalism! Next time I'll know a place to look in the edit code.

Poke --> Poké

Is there any way you can not change templates from e to é? Templates can't have special characters, I guess, and you are just linking to redirects. It's not much of a problem, but just a suggestion. Blake (Talk·Edits) 18:28, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

I can defintely do that, but I didn't know that templates couldn't have special characters. I just thought it was better to spell it correctly and I would have proposed switching to use the redirect as the default template, but I don't want to cause problems. What's the issue with special characters in templates? We have {{Pokémon}} that seems to be used and appears to work. —Ost (talk) 18:40, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
I don't really know. It has been mentioned a few times, I think, and the "Pokedex" and "Pokemon Directory" templates don't use it, and I would assume for a reason. Blake (Talk·Edits) 18:42, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
I'll search the archives to see where it's mentioned. Maybe it didn't work in the past and it does now, because I haven't seen any issue with it and we use {{Pokémon}}. I just assumed that users didn't know how to type or care about typing the "é" when they created the templates. I'm sure I can change my Find/Replace expressions, but I'm not sure I want to if the technical limitations no longer restrict templates from using special characters. —Ost (talk) 18:48, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
I can only find one discussion of names of templates using "é" and it seems only to be argued that it's difficult to type. Of course, I can be missing conversations. I would argue that the actual templates should use "é" and that the ones without should be redirects. This makes it easy for users to type and use while keeping the templates named properly. —Ost (talk) 19:03, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

I have a question: On Organic_reaction#Other_organic_reaction_classification, you can see the template in operation. It seems there is space after the text, and then above/before the template. Is there a way to remove this?174.3.123.220 (talk) 20:16, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

Notability of Jason Frank as a Martial Artist

I have been reviewing actors categorized as martial artists and have come to the article about Jason Frank. Jason is certainly notable as a Power Ranger. A top priority in selecting a category is the separation of fact and fiction. Could you look over Wikipedia:MANOTE and advise me how you feel Jason meets these notability standards? I will watch for your comments here. Thanks! jmcw (talk) 01:12, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

I don't see anything in that guideline that gives guidance on categories, and I expect a notable person to be in a category if they meet the general title or description of the category. The appropriate discussion should take place on the category talk pages in absence of descriptions on the category pages. The article discusses his martial arts experience and not his fictional character's, although I apologize for the full revert if there are categories that are not supported in the page; I'm not an expert on Power Rangers or martial arts, but the removal of categories seemed curious based on what I had recently read on the page.
Please also note that {{dead link}} instructs that "[t]his tag should be placed just before the </ref> that contains the dead link." Although links are great, references aren't required to have them. —Ost (talk) 13:27, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
From Wikipedia:Category, "It should be clear from verifiable information in the article why it was placed in each of its categories." jmcw (talk) 13:36, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
I apologized if I reverted too far, but cited material is verifiable, even if the link is not presently available. I haven't questioned your concerns about the reliability of some the sources, and I agree that links would be nice to have, but I don't see that as grounds for immediate removal from a category. —Ost (talk) 13:52, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
I have been convinced to give up my review of actors and the martial arts categories.Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Martial_arts#Celebrities_and_the_martial_arts jmcw (talk) 09:28, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

GCOTW

Ost. I've been wondering for this for a while. Why do you keep updating WikiProject Video games' Collaboration of the week? GamerPro64 (talk) 20:04, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

I didn't think it hurt anything, similar to the rational on {{semiactive}} that I had switched from {{inactive}}: it's easier for random editors to get back into it if it's semi-active than taken down completely and it can run itself since it's a bot. I pretty much felt that collab was dying down, but it further went away when I took a half-year wikibreak as the bot was broken and I stopped supporting it. Since the bot is back up, selecting an article is trivial (and updating history is just me liking things current and complete). These are supposed to be important topics for us and often they're left unwatched and untouched by experienced editors; I figure that even if the occasional editor and I make minor edits, it still moves the article in the right direction, compels me to add the page to my watchlist, and gets the article on others' radar—through Recent Changes, maintenance lists, etc. It also provides a check on the importance of articles that have been rated highly. It may not be the most effective collaboration right now, but I don't think that it's making anything worse. —Ost (talk) 20:57, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

Alsatian Shepalute Article

Hello Ost.  :) You recently placed a reliable sources tag on the American Alsatian article. While I agree with you that it would be great to include more third party sources in this article, the truth is that at this time all available third party sources relating to this topic have been referenced. Because an increased number of third party sources is going to take an undetermined amount of time and increased outside interest, I personally feel that the tag is not necessary at this time. Please consider removing it for now as there really is no way at the moment to comply with that request. Sincerely, Shepaluteprez (talk) 04:25, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for discussing this with me. I'm not trying to own the article or the decision, spo it may be more appropriate to continue on the article's talk page if we wish to continue. I understand your concern with the tag being present when there are no more known third party sources, though I disagree with removing the tag for that reason. More than a warning about the article, the message is a good indicator for other editors to pay attention for secondary sources that we may be unaware of. Topics need to show significant coverage in reliable to establish notability, and the lack of secondary sources is a symptom. The {{primary sources}} tag seems like an accurate description of the state of the article and better than proposing that the article be deleted for not establishing notability or even tagging the article with {{POV}} for relying on primary sources to characterize such qualities as breed behavior. Whether or not third-party sources exist, the page should have them to conform with guidelines; I prefer alerting others to the problem so that they can try to fix it. —Ost (talk) 13:56, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
I will continue on the Alsatian Shepalute talk page. Thank you for your thoughts. 205.201.214.145 (talk) 02:23, 25 June 2010 (UTC) Shepaluteprez (talk) 02:51, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Sourcing

Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, adding content without citing a reliable source as you did to Philip Kiriakis is not consistent with our policy of verifiability. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. If you are familiar with Wikipedia:Citing sources, please take this opportunity to add references to the article. Reliable sources include soapoperadigest.com and nbc.com. Fan sites like soaps.com, soapcentral.com, soapoperafan.com, are unreliable per WP:V. Thank you. Rm994 (talk) 00:45, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know, though I am well aware of the policy. I may have forgotten to find citations and I have done so now, but to be fair, the page was a stub that had little information. WP:V requires a source for material that is likely to be challenged, and I didn't expect that the general information would be be contested. I thought it better to give the article a starting point for other editors to expand beyond a history of the actors. I'm a little surprised that a self-proclaimed Days fan with related edits would choose to template me including general sources without even adding source to the biography, but I understand your concerns. —Ost (talk) 13:58, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

You edited the article List of licensed and localized editions of Monopoly with AWB to change "Vesijohtolaitos" to "VesiJohtolaitos" with the edit summary mentioning "johto -> Johto". DAB script

Battle Tower (disambiguation) is currently just a redirect to Battle Tower. It is not necessary to disambiguate something to a redirect to another dismabiguation page. So whatever script you're running, make it get rid of this.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 20:18, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing that out, but I did that purposely. It's recommended to link to the "(disambiguation)" page when that is the intentional target, presumably so later users will know that the link doesn't require disambiguation. —Ost (talk) 20:53, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
But the disambiguation page doesn't have "(disambiguation)" in the title. So why should we link to the page with "(disambiguation)" in the title when it's not the target page?—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 21:04, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict)That does not matter: ...link to the title that includes the text "(disambiguation)", even if that's a redirect (bold added). I understand your concerns with using a redirect when one is unneccessary and I'm unsure if this approach is older than a few months, but it does seem to be the prefered approach and dab tools are incorporating it. —Ost (talk) 21:10, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
And in response to you tagging the page for speedy, please note that the guideline also states "(If the redirect does not yet exist, create it and tag it with {{R to disambiguation page}}.)" —Ost (talk) 21:12, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
Well the policy is retarded. Why bother with redirects?—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 21:20, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict)The only thing I can figure is so that people trying to cleanup links to disambiguation pages know that it was intentional, since redirects are cheap. I find it can be helpful, but I wouldn't care if the approach wasn't used. As a guideline, I'm apt to follow it when I'm fixing other links, though I have no prejudice toward disputing the practice on WT:DAB. —Ost (talk) 21:33, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
The actual issue is that Battle Tower merely needs to be treated as something that is not a disambiguation page, because it dosen't disambiguate anything.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 21:30, 17 November 2010 (UTC)
That is a very good point that I hadn't even considered. Can it be turned into a redirect and included in Gameplay of Pokémonor Pokémon regions somewhere? —Ost (talk) 21:35, 17 November 2010 (UTC)

Nintendo task force membership update

It's that time again to update membership status with the Nintendo task force, which we periodically do to keep our membership up-to-date.

On 23 December, all entries under the "Inactive participants" list will be removed. While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Using dabfix

Hi, I see you're doing a lot of cleanup with dab fix. That's great! Please check the results though, by default it takes the article intro up to the second full stop as the descriptor for the dab item. This can be very long, or not particularly relevant. See my diff here. Also could you change your prefs so that the edit is not marked as minor by default. You can do that here. Happy editing. Tassedethe (talk) 20:39, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing that; I had it open in another tab after I noticed I left the long description, but I had bounced to another tab. I try to fix the issue you mentioned and as of today I started using the feature where it highlights using WikEd; sorry that I missed that one, though. I manually mark my edits as minor; they generally are minor in the scheme of edits that could be done on here and I only leave the box unchecked when make many additions or reformatting greatly. —Ost (talk) 20:43, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for clarifying. Tassedethe (talk) 21:12, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Assassin's Creed II

Hmmm, I don't think your revert is appropriate. Maybe someone would like to know what happened during this fictional Battle of Forlì in the real history ? That's why I put 1488 as a link. Greets, Sir Lothar (talk) 10:59, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

If it's important to know about that year, it may be helpful to explain the relevance in the article before pointing to sparsely populated list. WP:YEARLINK advises against linking years if it is only because readers may be curious about the year. 15th century has some of the same problems, but may provide some context for the entire game instead of just one portion. —Ost (talk) 18:02, 15 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for explanations, I see the point. Sir Lothar (talk) 18:46, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. CorenSearchBot (talk) 20:25, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Added template for SuggestBot

Hi,

Thanks for being one of SuggestBot's users! I hope you have found the bot's suggestions useful.

We are in the process of switching from our previous list-based signup process to using templates and userboxes, and I have therefore added the appropriate template to your user talk page. You should receive the first set of suggestions within a day, and since we'll be automating SuggestBot you will from then on continue to receive them regularly at the desired frequency.

We now also have a userbox that you can use to let others know you're using SuggestBot, and if you don't want to clutter your user talk page the bot can post to a sub-page in your userspace. More information about the userbox and usage of the template is available on User:SuggestBot/Getting Recommendations Regularly.

If there are any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch with me on my user talk page. Thanks again, Nettrom (talk) 23:46, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

Ton Class

Bonjour, Ost316. Ton Classes, an article you have just rename into Ton Class, removing the idea there is several classes, is in fact mainly talking about french Godinet Rule. There where before other ton rules, english rules, and I am not sure you made a good choice. Could you ask Wikiproject sailing in good english, about this question ? Thanks, --Barbetorte (talk) 20:53, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

I was just going by the article text; it doesn't capitalize "class" in the prose and it doesn't sound like a proper noun. If the article is only talking about the Godinet Rule, then that should likely be the article's title. As it is, the article seems to be about the concept of a ton class. I understand your point and you're welcome to bring it up to the project if you think that the title is flawed, but as a parallel, we don't have an article named weight classes, even though I expect that there is more than one system. I was gnoming and renaming based on WP:SINGULAR and WP:CAPS; I don't know much about the topic. —Ost (talk) 21:44, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

IRC invitation

Because I have noticed you commenting at the current RfC regarding Pending Changes, I wanted to invite you to the IRC channel for pending changes. If you are not customarily logged into the IRC, use this link. This under used resource can allow real time discussion at this particularly timely venture of the trial known as Pending Changes. History of video game consoles (seventh generation)

Thanks for joining the discussion on the use of the generations of video games in articles. I thought it might be helpful to reprint my first post on the OR noticeboard for you here:

There is a long debate occurring on the video game project page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Video_games/RfC_on_video_game_console_grouping) regarding the use of the term "generations" in the History of video games and related articles. Some editors have objected to the term for lacking sources. Other editors have found some sources which use the term (this one talks about generations 1-6: https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://strategy.sauder.ubc.ca/nakamura/iar515p/gallagher_innovation.pdf) (this one defines generation 7: http://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=epBIhmdsfxMC&oi=fnd&pg=PA184&dq=wii+seventh+generation&ots=9IbZE7z3EL&sig=AL7od0tw-uzu0EsBXc9cMqo3S_o#v=onepage&q=wii%20seventh%20generation&f=false). It is accepted that many sources can be found to place each console within a certain generation (for example: "The SNES and Genesis dominated the fourth generation of home consoles". However, certain editors have argued that it is original research and/or synthesis unless we can find one source that includes one entire list of every console and names all consoles in every generation. Others feel that as long as sufficient reliable sources can be found to name a certain console in a certain generation, that is sufficient for its inclusion as a member of that generation (and discrepancies should be handled by weighting the minority and majority positions appropriately).

You can see that the first source lists the generations from 1-6 (and defines the term "generation" while the second lists the consoles for the 7th generation. The argument on the board is that using these two sources to list generations 1-7 is OR and Synth. Obviously, I think that is incorrect, but I welcome your input.LedRush (talk) 23:35, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Campus Party

Hi Ost, thanks for your substantial cleanup of sources and linking on the Campus Party article, it's still very much a work in progress and certainly does need many more external sources. I appreciate your attention to detail and proper sourcing. - Deniz (talk) 23:40, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Physical location of Bucknell University

Most city post offices in the United States also serve suburban and rural areas around them that do not have their own post offices. The Lewisburg, Pennsylvania post office (zip code 17837), serves not only the Borough of Lewisburg, but most of East Buffalo Township, Buffalo Township, and Kelly Township, in addition to smaller parts of White Deer Township and Union Township. These independently governed places are not part of the Borough of Lewisburg (although they are within its metropolitan area). Are you saying that people do not live in these townships simply because they have a Lewisburg post office mailing address? Just because United States Penitentiary, Lewisburg gets its mail from the Lewisburg post office does not mean that it is physically located within its political borough limits. Backspace (talk) 09:42, 3 March 2011 (UTC)

Bucknell is within Lewisburg and East Buffalo Township; provide reliable references if you believe it is otherwise. Whether or not other venues in other small townships inaccurately use Lewisburg as their mailing addresses—not post offices—is not an issue that I am addressing. —Ost (talk) 15:31, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
You have proven that Bucknell lies partly in Lewisburg and mostly in East Buffalo Township. Does that mean that my solution is at least as good as yours, or that we are both correct, or that we are both wrong (only in the sense of being incomplete)? I stand by my assertion that all of the above-named locations (properly) use Lewisburg as their postal address, even though they are not physically located within the Borough of Lewisburg. Backspace (talk) 22:06, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
You changed an edit to make it was "near" Lewisburg when it is "in" it; that is wrong. My edit was merely a revert to the status quo; I have no prejudice against accurately indicating both jurisdictions. But note that any similar edits would be less controversial if you would include references with your edits, as Wikipedia is based on WP:Verifiability and not WP:Truth. I'm not sure what prompted you to make changes about Bucknell's location across multiple articles, but finding and naming explicit sources improves the quality of the information over looking at a map or using personal tribal knowledge. —Ost (talk) 22:33, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
Interesting this tribal knowledge business. I must admit that I have never heard the term before. Rest assured that it is not the source of my information, as I have neither attended Bucknell nor been anywhere near it (closest was New York City). My main source for such information is basically widely available maps, more specifically those showing township boundaries (in this case it was the official and widely available U.S. Census Bureau map). For this particular case I apparently made the mistake of assuming that, since Bucknell was obviously located in East Buffalo Township and close to its northern boundary, that it did not also extend beyond it. I was obviously wrong to assume this. Upon further checking I found that while most of its territory is in East Buffalo there is a relatively small part of it that is obviously in the Borough of Lewisburg. You and I both have since been able to relatively easily verify this point. Backspace (talk) 18:40, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Heading Style

Hi. I'm wondering why you recently made a whole series of edits to heading styles in the article Egg (food), by inserting gaps between the H2-H6 level markers and the text of the headings? The Manual of Style gives NO GAPS as the default style, but states that gaps may be used if an editor prefers them (), but it seems odd to be changing edits in the default style to a merely optional alternative? Timothy Titus Talk To TT 11:15, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

I may have run the wikEd cleanup script on some sections that led to Advisor.js suggesting "heading-style" changes—which switches to a consistent style with an article, based on what it sees as currently most used in the editing window—that I then applied. I did not mean to override other editors if the format was intentional, and I have not known the MOS to specify either method as the default style and do not see one there now; without mention of a preference, the section that you linked to reads Spaced or unspaced multiple equal signs are the style markup for headings. I am sorry for any inconvenience and had only meant to make the style consistent within the article. —Ost (talk) 13:39, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

Hello Ost316,
Thanks for adding references to this article, but, a big BUT, you missed that your edit caused a "Cite error". (Look for the red text right at the bottom of the page.)

The reason was that there was no {{Reflist}} or <references/>. In fact there was no References (or Notes) sections at all! I'm not having a go at you, just letting you know for future edits. It actually happens often, see Category:Pages with missing references list

I have fixed the 'error' by adding a references section. Happy Editing! - 220.101 talk\Contribs 14:43, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Thanks. I realized that there was an error and was not done with my edits. I was in the process of running WP:REFLINKS to correct it when I titled the links, but today my connection to Wikipedia is crawling in it took longer than expected to make the second edit. —Ost (talk) 15:15, 10 May 2011 (UTC)

Nintendo task force membership update

Hello,

It's that time again to update membership status with the Nintendo task force, which we try to do periodically to keep our membership up-to-date.

After 1 month, on 1 August 2011, all entries under the "Inactive participants" list will be removed. Hopefully you can stay with us and continue to work on Nintendo-related articles. Goo: Per MOS:DAB? Are you sure?

Hello, Ost316.

You recently edited Goo and said that you did this according to MOS:DAB. But perhaps you should read MOS:DAB again because your edit is in violation of Wikipedia:MOSDAB#Organizing long lists by subject.

I am not saying you were doing anything wrong deliberately; but maybe you are just out of date. Maybe MOS:DAB has changed since the last time you visited it. Fleet Command (talk) 12:51, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Could you be more specific as to what you think that I have violated? If you are referring to changing In <subject>: format used in the example to section headings, the text below specifies On longer lists, section headings should be used instead of, or in addition to, bold headings. Using more than one level may be necessary, as on Aurora (disambiguation). Always use ==Level two== as the highest-level header. Section headings should not include links. See Wikipedia:Writing better articles#Headings for more. If this is the contention, have no prejudice against restoring the original format, but I think that it is more editorial discretion than a conforming to MOS. —Ost (talk) 13:46, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for helping with the broken Edge links (you're the only one who's bothered to help me, so I really mean that). I hope you don't mind, but I've put the duplicate entries back into the article as they help indicate how many links there are in each article, as they're not all straightforward searches, to paraphrase Winston Zeddemore; "I've seen linking that would turn your References white" ;) - X201 (talk) 18:02, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

I clean up links frequently and had been fixing occasional Edge links already, so I'm glad to help. I'm sorry that I did not consider the benefit of the duplicates and will leave them in the list. —Ost (talk) 18:49, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll make a start on the edge-online list as soon as I finish the Next-Gen one. - X201 (talk) 07:49, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

Interview

Hi, I am a Wikipedian and researcher from Carnegie Mellon University, working with Professors Robert E. Kraut and Aniket Kittur. We’ve published many scholarly papers on Wikipedia and are partnering with the Wikimedia Foundation on several new projects.

I have been analyzing collaboration in Wikipedia, especially Collaborations of the Week/Month. My analysis of seven years of archival Wikipedia data shows that Collaborations of the Week/Month substantially increase the amount and nature of project members’ contributions, with long lasting effects. We would like to talk to Wikipedians to better understand the processes that that produce this behavior change.

We’ve identified you as a particularly good candidate to speak with because of your involvement with the WikiProject Video games' Collaborations, which is one of those we’ve been investigating. It would really help us if you would be willing to have a short talk with us, less than 30 minutes of your time. We can talk via skype or instant messenger or other means if you’d prefer. Do you have time at any point during this week to chat? If so, please leave a message on my talk page.

Thanks! (This my personal website)Haiyizhu (talk) 04:53, 8 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for replying me! Could you please send an email to haiyiz@cs.cmu.edu so that we can exchange messengers and schedule a time to talk? Haiyizhu (talk) 22:23, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Warlords

Hi Ost. I noticed you moved Warlords (video game) and then changed the redirect target. Ouch! I had to do a lot of cleanup for that one. In the future, when you move pages and change the redirect target, please make sure to update the pages that link to it, especially images, as failing to do that will break the link between the image and the article, making the non-free-content rationale invalid. 28bytes (talk) 16:27, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

You're absolutely right that I should have done that. I'm sorry; I recognized that the title was not clear enough and changed it, but I did not get around to the cleanup for the original. Thanks for your help and reminder. —Ost (talk) 17:00, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
You're welcome, and thanks for the friendly response. :) 28bytes (talk) 17:04, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Fuzzy tree

Hi Ost. I've just noticed your edit, and would like to apologise in advance because I disagree with you. I actually searched for the term after hearing the Presley song as I wondered what it referred to so did some research. From what you say in your edit summary it obviously has more than one meaning so the Daily News article could be misleading. I'll leave it as it is for now until I can find more information, but I do think it would be of benefit to readers from outside the United States to be able to look this up. Cheers and best wishes. Paul MacDermott (talk) 16:12, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

I am fine with a revert if you have a reference that supports your claim, but the link that you provided neither mentioned the song nor had clarity in what word "fuzzy" was modifying. After re-reading the sentence from the reference, I could understand why it may mean fuzzy tree, but I do not think that it is clear. A cursory search showed unreliable sources claiming that the term has may have referred to a rose bush or a peach tree. Either way, I'm not sure that the term is notable for wikipedia or even for wiktionary if it was only used once in a song. —Ost (talk) 17:01, 16 December 2011 (UTC)
No worries, I can't remember how I found my way to it, but it might have been through an online discussion. I've asked at WP:REFDESK anyway to see if someone can shed more light on it. Paul MacDermott (talk) 17:08, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

Dates

Hi. Please don't change the format of the date pages as you have done here without first discussing the change to consensus at WT:DAYS. The date articles all have a consistent format and any change should be discussed. Making a random change to one article creates a lot of work for other editors in reverting the change. If you have any questions, please ask. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 14:11, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Flag of Western Sahara

Hi Ost316, I noticed that you moved the Flag of Western Sahara page to Flag of Western Sahara (disambiguation) recently. You might not be aware of it, but this page has been very contentious, and there have been two big RfCs about what format the Flag of Western Sahara should take. The most recent of these RfCs ended with a consensus to have a "page explaining and linking to the various flags used to represent the territory, similar to Flag of Korea". I personally agree with having the page as a redirect, and I argued as much in the RfC, but I doubt the other participants would be happy with your move given the RfC result. Would you be willing to move the page back as it was? Best regards — Mr. Stradivarius 03:51, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

I was not aware of the dispute and rather only noticed that this was causing a disambiguation page to be listed in the {{Africa topic}} navbox on every "Flag of..." article for African regions. The "Flags of Asia" navbox does not list Korea separately in {{Asia topic}}. I noticed that the Moroccan flag was already present in the infobox. I had not intention to go against community will established in an RfC and since removing the disambiguation link is probably not a superior interest, I have nothing against my changes being reverted. Thank you for letting me know about this issue. —Ost (talk) 14:53, 7 March 2012 (UTC)
Don't worry, it's not a problem. I know that it's easy to overlook things like this. Best — Mr. Stradivarius 15:38, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Game character

Hi Ost--I got a note from a bot that apparently this was a dab page--I didn't know--and that I should specify where the term in Roland (game character) should point to. I chose Player character, which seemed correct from the definition there, but I'm having a real hard time understanding the other main option, Non-player character: there is too much I don't understand in "a character that is controlled by the gamemaster in tabletop role-playing games. In video games and other scenarios with character representations, an NPC is controlled by a program." I don't know what a gamemaster is, what a tabletop role-playing game is, etc. (There's other kinds of role-playing games? on non-tabletop surfaces?) Rather than stick a "clarify" comment in there I thought I'd drop you a line. Thanks. Drmies (talk) 13:47, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

I'll be happy to help. Game character is vague because it encompasses characters from any type of game, not just video games. So, when it talks about gamemasters, it is referring to tabletop RPGs. I don't know anything about Roland, but from the article description and Amstrad CPC, it sounds like player character is the correct choice. If he is someone like Mario that the usually player controls, then it is correct.
That being said, Roland may not be notable enough for its own article. Without any more references to demonstrate notability, it likely should be a redirect to Amstrad CPC#Roland. It would be extremely rare for a video game character based on a non-notable person to be notable without any notable games. The book reference does note media attention, but it would need some source digging to back up this claim. —Ost (talk) 18:23, 11 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, and thanks for your tweaks on the dab page. Drmies (talk) 19:54, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi. When you recently edited Dartmoor Zoological Park, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Bug (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ  Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Krogzilla

Hi. You added tags the article Krogzilla, questioning its notability and saying that it overly relies on primary sources. Personally, I am not sure that either of these are warranted. Yes, it is a YouTube series, but it was created by a professional filmmaker (his film Hoodwinked! made over $100 million worldwide and starred such famous actors as Anne Hathaway, Glenn Close, and Jim Belushi), features professional actors, and has been mentioned in USA Today, Variety, the Los Angeles Times, and Entertainment Weekly. Is it one of the more notable articles on Wikipedia? Certainly, not. But that doesn't mean that it isn't still notable enough to have its own article. The article does heavily rely on primary sources, but it also includes a source from Entertainment Weekly and two from USA Today, and I am not sure why it should be a problem to source the official website of the series' creator for production info. --Jpcase (talk) 00:52, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

I really don't know anything about the series and I was just suggesting that it warranted additional scrutiny to demonstrate its notability. Simply put, primary sources are not valid for determining notability, which requires demonstration of "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." Also important is that notability is not inherited through the notability of another topic like Hoodwinked. Of the three third party sources, Krogzilla is only mentioned in the "TV on the Web" list. Consequently, as the article stands now, it is not showing that the subject is notable. The inclusion of information from reliable third party sources that cover the series in detail would be needed. If series notability is demonstrated, I would also caution against the miscellaneous information after each episode summary; they could be considered being given undue weight if the independent sources don't cover them. —Ost (talk) 15:43, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
My mistake. You are right that Krogzilla is not mentioned in the Entertainment Weekly article or the USA Today article (though this article does cover the YouTube initiative that led to the show's creation). That said, this series has been mentioned by name in articles from Variety and the Los Angeles Times , as well as Animation Magazine and cartoonbrew.com . I know that this isn't a large amount, but it should be enough to prove the show's notability. These articles were not needed as references, but if you feel that it would be a good idea, I can add them as external links.
I was not trying to argue that Hoodwinked! makes Krogzilla notable. I was explaining that the involvement of a professional filmmaker (Cory Edwards) and a professinonal cast should be enough to make the series notable, in addition to its coverage by respected, independent news sources.
I'm not sure why the production information for the individual episodes is a problem. Independent sources are needed for opinions or interpretations; that's what the USA Today "TV on the Web" reference is for . Everything sourced by Cory Edwards' official website is a fact, pertaining to the show's development or production. What more reliable source for production information is there, than the creator himself? Its really no different from citing a DVD commentary or an interview. It certainly wouldn't be acceptable to use Edwards' site to illustrate notability of the series, but as a source of production information, it should be fine. --Jpcase (talk) 16:59, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for taking the time to investigate and reply. I'd have to look more closely at the sources—though I don't have time now— but it sounds like they'd help in establishing notability. If you have time, working them into the article would improve its quality. Basically, though, WP:NOTINHERITED still applies for Hoodwinked/Cory Edwards promoting notability. Their notability doesn't detract from Krogzilla's, but it also doesn't add to notability (in the Wikipedia sense). Conversely, the existence of the Cory Edwards article actually makes it feasible for Krogzilla to be merged to it in lieu of notability.
As for the other information from the Cory Edwards site, while it may be factual, that doesn't necessarily make it relevant for Wikipedia. WP:UNDUE may apply because it needs "significant viewpoints that have been published by reliable sources", while WP:NOTEVERYTHING and WP:USEFUL provide additional rationale for not including information just because some may appreciate it. I didn't pour over that first-party info, so it may be that there is notable information, but some that I read sounded more like WP:TRIVIA. —Ost (talk) 18:29, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
These sources really don't include any information that is not already a part of the article and referenced with another source, so as I said, I will simply add them as external links. In all honesty, the articles don't really contain a lot of detail on Krogzilla. Their main focus is on the YouTube channel that airs the series, but Krogzilla is mentioned briefly in all of them. Personally though, I feel that even a brief mention by Variety and The Los Angeles Times, along with a couple of smaller, but still professional news sources, and placement on a "Best of" list by USA Today is enough to confer notability on a series.
I am not sure whether Krogzilla should be judged by the criteria of web content WP:WEB, but the criteria for film WP:NF states that the significant involvement of a notable person may be enough to confer notability on a topic. Certainly if a webseries was produced by Steven Spielberg or starred Tom Cruise, their involvement would be enough to prove the series' notability (as long as some reliable, independent news sources could also be located).
It may be that I am misunderstanding the idea behind undue weight, but the main point seems to be that minority viewpoints shouldn't be over-represented. The information contained on Cory Edwards' website is not a "viewpoint". They're facts that simply haven't been mentioned by any other sources. As I said, Krogzilla is not incredibly notable, even though I feel that it is notable enough to have its own article on Wikipedia. Thus, it is not surprising that in depth production information has not been included in something like Variety. Even bits of information on a more notable topic may only be available from a single source. If this were an article about say, a major current event, then I would understand the necessity of broad coverage for any bit of information included in the article. But most film/televsion articles probably include information that was only ever given in one interview or one behind the scenes DVD feature, and I don't see why this would be a problem.
The episode development and casting information contained in these sections is certainly more encyclopedic than what is warned against in WP:NOTEVERYTHING and WP:USEFUL, though I probably would not be opposed to removing some of it. I wrote the article, and as I was writing it, I wasn't sure what exactly to do with all of the behind-the-scenes information on the individual episodes. I felt that much of it was relevant to the article, but I am not entirely pleased with how well I incorporated it. I would be glad with another editor re-writing or re-organizing the article and if they chose to remove some of the information on the individual episodes, I would not be opposed to that. However, I would be strongly opposed to the removal of all of this information. --Jpcase (talk) 22:05, 1 November 2012 (UTC)
I appreciate your position, but I'm not convinced that notability is established. Brief mentions in reliable sources are typical cases of not receiving significant coverage. I'm not familiar enough with the WP:NF exception for notability through significant involvement, but I'm not convinced that it applies, especially since this isn't a film. Moreover, WP:WEB specifically has a section about how notability isn't inherited.
I've already spent more time on this page than I planned. Originally, I was merely pointing out problems with it, but now that I've learned more about the supporting sources it, I would feel bad if I ignored the weak basis for notability. This discussion should involve more than us anyway, so I proposed deletion, partially to get visibility Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Krogzilla. I hope that you understand that this isn't personal, but notability feels less likely the more that I learn about the Wikipedia-accepted support for the series. I welcome you or anyone else to put forth your notability beliefs and provide more sources if possible. —Ost (talk) 16:43, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
Don't worry, I don't take it personally at all, and agree that opening this up to a wider discussion is the right thing to do. Of course, I did express my viewpoint at the Articles for Deletion page and hope that other editors will agree with it, but I will comply with whatever the majority consensus is. Thanks for the time you've been willing to devote to this discussion. --Jpcase (talk) 15:38, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

Cosmonkey

Just thought I'd let you know that I've added a reference from Entertainment Weekly to the Roger Cosmonkey article. Since this is a reliable, independent source and I believe that it is adequate for establishing the webcomic's notability, I have removed the referencing and notability tags. If you feel that either of these tags are still necessary though, please let me know. --Jpcase (talk) 21:39, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for working on the page. Typically, I'd still use Template:refimprove as but one reference rarely is enough to confer notability. That being said, I also noticed others that would also show notability. This is especially true since the sources have more than mentions. But I didn't go through them to make sure that they're reliable; the Examiner one, for instance, is considered a spam link. So, I think that the topic could use more sourcing so that a casual reader could see the notability without a web search, but I'm not going to split hairs. —Ost (talk) 22:33, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Duplicated refs

In this edit, you used some tool (it's not clear whether it was Checklinks or Advisor.js) to notice that two refs named "MDB" were not identical, and changed one copy to be named "autogenerated1" instead. But it turns out that these actually were the same ref, just one had an extra link added to a Google translation. The same happened with two refs named "vghistory", where the difference was in the formatting of the accessdate. It might be a good idea to watch out for that sort of thing in the future when your tool introduces "autogenerated" ref names. Thanks! Anomie 02:42, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. It would be Checklinks that did it, but is there really a problem with what it did? I didn't think that refs should be defined twice and two refs shouldn't use the same name if they're different. I agree that the ideal situation would be to add the other information to the ref that was lacking it and I will try to pay attention to catch this case if I see it again, but I would think that separating is better than leaving it alone. Otherwise, an editor could think that they are changing the ref, only to have it overwritten later on the page. Of course, User:Dispenser may not have considered that two refs with the same name may only differ by appended data, and merging functionality may be something he'd like improve the tool's robustness. —Ost (talk) 07:23, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
The only problem it causes is that the article winds up with two refs to the same source that are formatted slightly differently; most likely what causes this slightly-different-formatting situation is that someone copy-pastes some text including the entire ref from one section of the article to another, and then later on someone adjusts one copy without realizing there is another. I never suggested to leave them alone, just that if you see it renaming a ref to "autogenerated" it would be a good idea to take a look to see if this is happening. Anomie 12:01, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
Sorry for my confusion and getting wordy in me reply. I will try to be pay attention to it and I do appreciate you pointing it out to me. —Ost (talk) 16:37, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
