Introduction to contentious topics

edit

You have recently edited a page related to India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Hi. I'm not involved in the content dispute on the page. This just serves as a notice that you should be aware of heightened behavioral expectations when editing about India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. I would recommend talking to the other editor in question about the disputed content (while logged in) about this, either at Talk:Asim Munir or at User talk:DaDefeender. It seems like you're adding original research and unreliable sources as citations in BLPs. Please avoid this and ensure you're adhering to WP:RS guidelines. —Saqib (talk | contribs) 10:55, 1 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

If you continue to violate policy by adding WP:OR into BLPs, as you recently did on several BLPs, I'll have to report you. Saqib (talk I contribs) 12:30, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Greetings, please be specific and if possible pinpoint exact occurrences, my whole aim here has been to defuse false facts associated with these personalities and try to bring verifiable facts backed by credible references and sources, sorry if there’s a misunderstanding, cheers. Metamentalist (talk) 16:49, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
WP:OR @ Alam Lohar (Diff ~1230052636), Arif Lohar (Diff ~1230052427), Atif Aslam (Diff ~1229390687), Ramiz Raja (Diff ~1228855965), Faysal Quraishi (Diff ~1230069505), DoB @ Ahmad Ali Butt (Diff ~1229966106), and many more. Saqib (talk I contribs) 17:06, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
OK so case by case :
Alam Lohar -> I took out the "his children live in the UK", not written in the 2 sources, while I added that he has 8 boys (which is in the Asia Society source I quoted, Asia Society being a credible source of course)
Arif Lohar -> Just added info (one of 8 siblings + acting career subsec), all sourced by the Asia Society profile as well
Atif Aslam -> reorganized a bit (songs title in Italics, etc), only addition being 3 brothers, source being Gulf News (credible)
Ramiz Raja -> there too just reorganization, new info is only about his family roots that were covered in another source (that I also archived)
Faysal Qureshi -> added in Early life with credible source (Bol News)
Ahmed Ali Butt -> Mainly reorganization, new addition (such as drama "Gentleman") is sourced
As I said my own aim is to dismiss unsourced info, in fact it was one of the main reasons I created this account (before I only used to lurk without an actual account.)
Thanks for your understanding. Metamentalist (talk) 18:59, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
So are you saying that you haven't included any WP:OR and you're denying my claims? Also, please note that Bol is not a RS therefore it should be avoided. Saqib (talk I contribs) 19:03, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I want to convey that all these facts have been backed by credible sources (I can concede for Bol but here too it'd still be debatable I believe), as I affirmed one of the very reasons for my presence is here was to demystify the Pakistani celebrities' pages (I remember actor Danish Taimoor is the one that impulsed me, as it was badly written and with too many unreferenced material presented as facts). I self identify as a good faith actor in all of this process, not someone intending to cause qualitative damage. Metamentalist (talk) 19:09, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Debatable ? Bol News was just recently discussed at WP:RSN and it was deemed an unreliable source so please respect that consensus. Also you mentioned working on a Danish' BLP, but I don't see your contributions there. Were you editing it under a different account? Saqib (talk I contribs) 19:17, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
My bad, I genuinely wasn't aware, I can anyway replace it as this fact has been corroborated by many other sources (more credible than Bol certainly), I'll prob do it, as for the Danish Taimoor edit, look up for the following :
"20:59, 6 January 2024‎ Metamentalist talk contribs‎ 13,459 bytes +52‎ "Cleaned" the page a bit (took off bad sourced or unsourced partisan info and rearranged it overall)" Metamentalist (talk) 19:28, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Anyways, I strongly suggest avoiding citing unreliable sources (besides Bol) in articles, especially when it comes to BLPs. Saqib (talk I contribs) 20:30, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I'll try to keep this in mind and focus on sources such as Dawn News, cheers. Metamentalist (talk) 06:49, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Reverted Edit

edit

Hello I noticed you reverted my edit in Baloch article. In the religion section you added:

: 64.78% are Deobandis, 33.38% are Barelvis, and 1.25% are Ahl-i Hadith

These two revivalists movement are only practiced by the Baloch of Pakistan and not followed in other Baluch-populated areas in Iran, Afghanistan and etc. The article is needed to be modified as in the context stating "The majority of the Baloch people in Pakistan". It only shows the religious index of the Baloch people of Pakistan, not all Baloch people.

Deobandi and Barelvi are not mentioned in the valid sources and studies that represent the religion of the Baloch.[1][2]

I've checked all the sources, and none of them , mention that the Baloch religion shows "Deobandi and Barelvi " . Or anything along those lines. Seems only the Baloch in Pakistan follow those sects not generally correct about other Baloch. Balash-Vologases (talk) 16:08, 19 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

"Minor edit" has a specific definition on Wikipedia—it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Please understand that in order to mention that Aryan "on a personal level identifies with Islam", an adult person like him would need to self-identify as such. A source that mentions what his mother semi-jokingly said on a talk show (when he was a child) should definitely not be used. Krimuk2.0 (talk) 10:16, 5 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

Greetings, could you please reverify the source and tell me where it was precised that she mentionned Aryan's childhood ? From my understanding it was more general, also, it's the previous sentence ("Khan follows both his parents' religions of Islam and Hinduism") which is based on his childhood (source is from the early 2000s). Thanks for your eventual reply so I could process to a re-edit or not. Metamentalist (talk) 10:25, 5 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
The Menxp source you used cites this IBT article which is not considered a WP:RS at WP:ICTFSOURCES. That source talks about what she said semi-jokingly on Koffee with Karan in 2005. Krimuk2.0 (talk) 10:32, 5 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
fair enough I can see that you have also reworded that particular part. Metamentalist (talk) 11:31, 5 February 2025 (UTC)Reply
Yes, reworded to make it neutral. Also, there is no need to spoon-feed small paragraphs with sub-headings. Perhaps when his debut show releases, we can have a separate section after its expanded. And avoid naming sections "controversy", per WP:CSECTION. Krimuk2.0 (talk) 11:36, 5 February 2025 (UTC)Reply

This helps your fellow editors use their time more productively, rather than spending it unnecessarily scrutinizing and verifying your work. Stop icon Your recent editing history at Punjabi Hindus shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war; read about how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editingespecially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warringeven if you do not violate the three-revert ruleshould your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Yasir Nawaz. This means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be although other editors disagree. Users are expected to collaborate with others, to avoid editing disruptively, and to try to reach a consensus, rather than repeatedly undoing other users' edits once it is known that there is a disagreement.

Points to note:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive regardless of how many reverts you have made;
  2. Do not edit war even if you believe you are right.

If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the article's talk page to discuss controversial changes and work towards a version that represents consensus among editors. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. Recent edit reversion

edit

In this edit here, I reverted some information that appears to be a violation of our copyright policy.

I provided a brief summary of the problem in the edit summary, which should be visible just below my name. You can also click on the "view history" tab in the article to see the recent history of the article. This should be an edit with my name, and a parenthetical comment explaining why your edit was reverted. If that information is not sufficient to explain the situation, please ask.

I do occasionally make mistakes. We get hundreds of reports of potential copyright violations every week, and sometimes there are false positives, for a variety of reasons. (Perhaps the material was moved from another Wikipedia article, or the material was properly licensed but the license information was not obvious, or the material is in the public domain but I didn't realize it was public domain, and there can be other situations generating a report to our Copy Patrol tool that turn out not to be actual copyright violations.) WP:BLP and WP:MOS violations

edit

Quite a few of your recent edits under the Cinema of India topic violate basic and WP:BLP and MOS:FILM.

This and this for instance violate basic guidelines such as WP:CSECTION and to make vague accusations of plagiarism so prominent is a basic BLP vio.

Here for instance, as the {{Infobox film}} documentation should make clear, the parameters are for official credits not what certain parties claim to be the case (i.e. it might be suited for the body but certainly not the infobox or lede).

I will be editing these to conform with enwiki policies and guidelines. And just as a reminder, the topic of Indian cinema is also covered by WP:CT/SA (which I see you have been informed of above), so be extra careful to comply with our P&G. Gotitbro (talk) 07:51, 14 December 2025 (UTC)Reply

Just because you specify |some_param=some_variable does not always mean that variable will display. The |some_param= must be defined in the template. You need to discuss the disagreement on the article's talk page and work towards a revision that represents consensus among everyone involved. You can post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution if discussions reach an impasse. In some cases, it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If you continue to engage in edit warring, you may be blocked from editing. Kautilya3 (talk) 19:11, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Stop icon Your recent editing history at Kashmiris shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. This means that you are repeatedly changing a page's content back to how you believe it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree with your changes. Please stop editing the page and use the talk page to work toward creating a version of the page that represents consensus among the editors involved. Wikipedia provides a page explaining how this is accomplished. If discussions reach an impasse, you can request help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution such as a third opinion. In some cases, you may wish to request page protection while a discussion to resolve the dispute is ongoing.

If you continue edit warring, you may be blocked from editing Wikipediaespecially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's workwhether in whole or in part, or whether it involves the same or different material each timecounts as a revert. Also, please keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warringeven if you do not violate the three-revert rule if things indicate that you intend to continue reverting content on the page. Slow edit war at Asim Munir

edit

Stop icon You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war, according to the reverts you've made to Asim Munir. This means that you are repeatedly reverting content back to how you think it should be, despite knowing that other editors disagree. Once it is known that there is a disagreement, users are expected to collaborate with others, avoid editing disruptively, and try to reach a consensus – rather than repeatedly reverting the changes made by other users.

Important points to note:

  1. Edit warring is disruptive behavior – regardless of how many reverts you have made;
  2. Do not engage in edit warring – even if you believe that you are right.

-- Toddy1 (talk) 19:46, 10 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

If you believe that there are good reasons for being unblocked, please review Wikipedia's guide to appealing blocks, then submit a request through the unblock wizard or through your talk page.  Ponyobons mots 21:02, 14 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Metamentalist, you have a staggering number of notices and warnings on this talk page trying to explain the absolute importance of reliable sourcing when editing; this is even more critical when working with BLPs. And yet, despite over two years and 5k+ edits to this project, you still continue to add unsourced content. This really needs to stop now, and warnings have failed to make any inpact, hence the block.-- Ponyobons mots 21:02, 14 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Further to the above, these sources are basically fancruft and directory listigns which do not rise to the level of sourcing required for BLPPRIVACY. Also, are you editing while logged out? I ask becasue the same edits have been attempted from IPs. --CNMall41 (talk) 18:30, 2 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
And now I came across a May 27th revert of this source which I had previously removed as unreliable. I am unsure how to stress the importance of your conduct at this point as it relates to referencing. --CNMall41 (talk) 01:34, 4 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello I just try to upgrade the quality of Pakistani entertainment pages, as there are lack of primary sources on all sorts of subjects, whenever for example I put a project + character name I make sure to look into the project myself, if you think it doesn't fit the standards I won't engage in edit warring but I have no hidden agenda or something. Metamentalist (talk) 09:53, 9 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
