Add a Fact survey and thank you

edit

Thank you for testing out the Add A Fact browser extension! This extension was developed as an experiment by the Future Audiences team at the Wikimedia Foundation to learn about new ways of contributing to Wikipedia from outside of our website/apps.

We are planning to wrap up this experiment this December, sunsetting the extension and publishing our findings on-wiki. We’d like to invite you to take part in an exit survey to tell us more about your experience of trying out the extension, and to share any ideas you have about how to support new ways of contributing to Wikipedia. The survey is anonymous (see the survey privacy statement) and should take about 10–15 minutes to complete.

You can take the Goole Forms survey here.

Kind regards, MPinchuk (WMF)

But wouldn't that leave the unintended title as a redirect that still needs to be deleted? Marbletan (talk) 18:08, 9 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

Recent edit

Hi Marbletan. I noticed this edit to 4-nitrophenol 2-monooxygenase where you changed the width of the chemical reaction template I added recently. I've been doing literally hundreds of these and try to ensure the width is appropriate. My original was like this:

+ NADH + H+

O2
H2O
Rightward reaction arrow with minor substrate(s) from top left and minor product(s) to top right

+ NAD+

and after your change this became

+ NADH + H+

O2
H2O
Rightward reaction arrow with minor substrate(s) from top left and minor product(s) to top right

+ NAD+

On my PC screen, your version gives tiny images and the wikilinks to 4-Nitrophenol and redlink to 4-Nitrocatechol are cut off so readers can't see the full text. The design of the template intentionally makes the width of the caption/link no larger than the image above them. Please explain What you thought was wrong with my version? Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:33, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Michael D. Turnbull: Hmmm, I think we are seeing something different. To me it looks much better after my edit. In your comment above, the chemical structure images in the first example are way too big in relation to the text, and the ones in the second example are reasonably sized. I've created a screenshot to illustrate. Marbletan (talk) 12:20, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Out of curiosity, I tried a different browser and got different results. Using Chrome your version looks better and using Firefox my version looks better. (The screenshot is Firefox.) Marbletan (talk) 12:39, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
The browser difference seems to be the root cause. I use MS Edge, which has the same engine as Chrome. I also took a look at the article using my Samsung mobile phone with its built-in browser. In that case, both versions appear OK as they expand to full screen width when seen in portrait mode. I'm not sure what the best way forward here is, so I'm pinging @User:Synpath who created the template to get their view. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:06, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Also, the image size appears to be scaled based on the width of the browser window. A simple solution may be to update the template to handle fixed-width images. Marbletan (talk) 14:12, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the ping! The template does scale with the size of the container it is in and for the vector skins that maxes out somewhere around 800-1000 px. I'm guessing you're using a different skin or have some other CSS that extends how wide a page can be and I didn't account for that in the template (I focused more on mobile screens). If you're using a skin other than vector, could you let me know? It'll let me test a fix more easily. Synpath 18:21, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
According to my preferences setting I'm using "Vector legacy (2010)". I don't recall ever choosing that one and based on its name it may be outdated. I'll try switching to "Vector 2022". Marbletan (talk) 18:26, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
It probably isn't the skin then, but maybe the "wide" setting under the appearance toolbar being turned on alongside having a large monitor. It could be something else too, though probably something to do with the outer container being larger than expected. I made the change, Special:Diff/1346934694, which caps how large the template can get. How does it affect the appearance of the template on this talk page for you? Synpath 19:08, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I don't see any difference following that edit. Marbletan (talk) 19:29, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thinking on it a bit more, that makes sense, thanks. I'll continue looking for a CSS trick to help with this. I'd rather avoid scaling the width against a constant value, which would definitely fix this issue at the cost of how it scales down to small sizes. Synpath 20:08, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
I've made two more edits (, ). This is should more effectively cap the size of the template for large screens. The maximum sizing cutoff is pretty arbitrary at 900 px, but the value seems to work for the test cases. Has this changed the templates on the talk page here for you? Do they look wonky? Synpath 21:55, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
This is a standard "thumb" image, 220p wide, the same as the default chembox

When I edit the template into, say, the glyceollin article, I set the width to give an output where the individual compounds in a scheme approximate to the same size as in the "thumb" and {{chembox}} default of 220px. This was an example before Synpath's recent tweaks:

GS

Rightward reaction arrow

Following the tweaks, the chemrxn drawing is now (in my opinion and with my settings) too small, with more white space surrounding it than necessary. To get back to the same size as the thumb image for the chemicals, the width parameter would have to go to 70% from the 55% it was, viz:

GS

Rightward reaction arrow

This is a standard "thumb" image, 220px wide, for this particular drawing

The real problem is that the .svg for 4-nitrophenol in Wikidata is much too narrow, as can be seen when it is put in a standard "thumb"! Using an alternative drawing, the one used in the chembox of 4-Nitrophenol, you get a much better situation

This is a standard "thumb" image, 220px wide, the same as the default chembox

So my suggestion is to 1) revert Synpath's recent changes 2) fix 4-nitrophenol 2-monooxygenase that Marbletan quite reasonably found objectionable by using an alternative 4-nitrophenol drawing 3) enter further discussion using a sandbox version of a trial template so we don't alter the live encyclopaedia while we move forward. Regarding (1), my original diagram in this thread is now the worst of both worlds, since it cuts off the caption although the size of the phenol is, for me, still OK.

I think that the template should be optimised for Vector 2022, which is the current default, and follow other recommendations at Help:Pictures and relevant parts of the MOS on images.Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:16, 4 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

If I'm looking at it right, the chemrxn template uses the image from Wikidata based on the given qid. Is there currently a way to override that default, so that 4-Nitrophenol acsv.svg would appear rather than P-Nitrophenol.svg, for example (without changing the image at Wikidata)? If not, that feature would useful. I can image that if you wanted matching chemical structure representations in a given reaction, you wouldn't want to rely on Wikidata having matching representations. Marbletan (talk) 12:45, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
When I've being doing uploads of new drawings, I always copy the filename into Wikidata because the template most often takes its image from there: even in the simple case where you just place the article name (e.g. 4-Nitrophenol) into the template. That's why the example we started discussing is as it is. The simplest "fix" is simply to change the Wikidata entry, which I've hesitated to do until our discussion here finishes, or the images in this thread would change! To answer your question, the template can take filenames but needs slightly different syntax: see Indole-2-monooxygenase, which I just did a few minutes ago. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:55, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Since Wikidata is used across multiple Wikimedia projects, we shouldn't change Wikidata images just to suit our needs, in my opinion. Plus I could see us wanting different represenations of the same compound in different contexts. Marbletan (talk) 13:01, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that's the point! If the template is used in other-language projects, it will work fine exactly because it takes its images from Wikidata unless over-written by using a filename. I know from experience that Wikidata .svg files only get there when someone takes the trouble to include the filename as the "chemical structure" property. Most people who upload to Commons don't bother. If you check out my uploads you'll see that I've done hundreds, probably more than any other single editor. The standard way to put files into chemboxes etc in all languages is to insert their filenames, not rely on Wikidata. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:15, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
OK, I understand. So I guess my question is, is it currently possible to make chemrxn use File:4-Nitrophenol acsv.svg at 4-nitrophenol 2-monooxygenase without changing the image file that is being used at Wikidata? Marbletan (talk) 13:20, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Yes, just use this version of the template:

+ NADH + H+

O2
H2O
Rightward reaction arrow with minor substrate(s) from top left and minor product(s) to top right

+ NAD+

This uses {{chemrxn/sub|[[File:4-Nitrophenol acsv.svg|class=skin-invert-image]]|caption=[[4-nitrophenol]] }} instead of the somewhat simpler line {{chemrxn/cpd|4-Nitrophenol }} Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:36, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I've been away for a couple of days. I do think I've edited the template a little hastily since I probably unfairly regard it with a bit of ownership and thought it to be a small change. I'll slow it down. That said, I'm not seeing any problems with the new max size. You said earlier that your original change (the first reaction scheme template in this thread) is now the worst of both worlds, but I think it looks great.
One thing I do see now, is that the template max size needs to be tied to font-size rather than an arbitrary pixel value and I think that value is 59.25rem. This is the default column size for articles in the Vector2022 skin when using the standard width setting in the appearance menu. This computes to 948px for a "medium font size", which is 16px for my browser settings (59.25rem * 16px/rem). I'll add the change to the chemrxn sandbox.
As for trying to standardize the reaction scheme images to the typical 'thumb' setting of 220px wide. This is a moving target if the scheme's size is scaled to the font size chosen by the user, though maybe the issue is lessened by that kind of scaling? Edit: chemrxn CSS sandbox diff, chemrxn testcases courtesy link ~ Synpath 23:24, 7 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes scaling is complicated and as Help:Pictures#Thumbnail sizes says, should not normally be set in pixels, despite thumbs and infoboxes having default values. We are never going to accommodate all possible ways that readers view article and your template already does a good job, so I'm relaxed about this. I'm now going to fix the article 4-nitrophenol 2-monooxygenase that started this discussion by swapping the 4-nitrophenol drawing to the one just above which is a bit "wider" and works much better. Unless either of you wish to comment further, that's all folks! Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:24, 10 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your contributions to Xenon hexafluropalladate. Unfortunately, I do not think it is ready for publishing as a live article at this time because Heavily relies on a cite that does not appear to mention this compound at all. That casts doubt on the sourcing and integrity of the rest as well.. I have converted it to a draft which you can improve, undisturbed for a while.

Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit the draft for review!" button at the top of the page OR move the page back. DMacks (talk) 03:52, 16 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
