This user is a veteran Wikipedian among the top 1460 Wikipedians in edit count, editing since December 21, 2006, as a registered user. This user also holds the record for the longest current editing streak on the English Wikipedia with over 6500 consecutive days since November 11, 2007 (over 17 years straight), the only one whose current streak began before 2008 and the top of the two whose current streak began before the SOPA boycott of January 18, 2012, despite participating in said boycott and the boycott is based on Eastern Standard Time as it is a United States congressional bill and all such bills are made in the capital of Washington, D.C., while the streak is based on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), as with the rest of Wikipedia; UTC is not to be confused with Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). This user is also featured in the Toronto Star in 2015 (see below). You can also see my impact here: Special:Impact/Johnny Au. Note that the editing streak counter in Special:Impact is not accurate and Wikipedia:Database reports/Longest active user editing streaks is preferred as the latter also accounts for non-mainspace edits and I make many non-mainspace edits, while Special:Impact only accounts for mainspace edits.

WikiClub Toronto Meetup January 2026

edit

I signed up for the meetup and will attend it. However, it will very likely be crowded, given the number of attendees and the room booked. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 01:33, 12 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

It went well and I enjoyed my time at the meetup. It would be great if there were more options for lunch other than sandwiches and wraps. Previous meetups had a few pizzas with various toppings from Domino's. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:29, 21 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Ontario Northland bus connection at Highway 407 station

edit

Have you heard the new regional transit connection announcers on TTC Lines 1 and 4 trains?

edit

Hi Johnny, have you heard the recently added regional transit connection announcers - such as GO Transit, Ontario Northland, York Regional Transit etc - on the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) Toronto Rocket trains on Line 1 Yonge-University and Line 4 Sheppard?

I believe these were added in December 2025 when Line 6 Finch West LRT opened for passenger use.

For instance Line 1 trains approaching Highway 407 station now say "Transfer for GO Transit, York Regional Transit and Ontario Northland".

I don't think subway train announcements ever announced connections with other regional transit systems prior to December 2025, they only announced the next station including transfers to other subway lines, and that was it.

The Toronto Rocket trains originally did not come with regional transit connection anmouncers even when they 1st came into passenger service in 2011 until a retrofit was made in December 2025. Alexscarborough (talk) 03:12, 14 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Yes. However, it is best to find a reliable source as my word is not absolute. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 17:49, 14 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
Here is the YouTube video clip that shows it: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/EWDFwzvsD1E Alexscarborough (talk) 03:30, 15 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
YouTube is generally not a reliable source. Let me summon Joeyconnick, Transportfan70, and Turini2 as well for their thoughts on this proposed addition as they are the primary editors for Toronto transit-related articles, while I mainly do minor edits and the occasional small content additions. I just so happen to make very frequent edits. Thanks. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 16:14, 15 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

Temporary account IP viewer granted

edit
The temporary account IP viewer logo, composed of the Wikipedia globe with a bald faceless user and an IP address

Hello, Johnny Au. Per your request, your account has been granted temporary-account-viewer rights. You are now able to reveal the IP addresses of individuals using temporary accounts that are not visible to the general public. This is very sensitive information that is only to be used to aid in anti-abuse workflows. Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Temporary account IP viewer for more information on this user right. It is important to remember:

  • You must not share IP address data with someone who does not have the same access permissions unless disclosure is permissible as per guidelines listed at Foundation:Policy:Wikimedia Access to Temporary Account IP Addresses Policy.
  • Access must not be used for political control, to apply pressure on editors, or as a threat against another editor in a content dispute. There must be a valid reason to investigate a temporary user. Note that using multiple temporary accounts is not forbidden, so long as they are not used in violation of policies (for example, block or ban evasion).

It is also important to note that the following actions are logged for others to see:

  • When a user accepts the preference that enables or disables IP reveal for their account.
  • Revealing an IP address of a temporary account.
  • Listing the temporary accounts that are associated with one or more IP addresses (using the CIDR notation format).

Remember, even if a user is violating policy, avoid revealing personal information if possible. Use temporary account usernames rather than disclosing IP addresses directly, or give information such as same network/not same network or similar. If you do not want the user right anymore, then please ask me or another administrator and it will be removed for you. You may also voluntarily give up access at any time by visiting Special:Preferences. Happy editing!  rsjaffe 🗣️ 20:27, 2 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I will put this privilege that was newly granted to me to great use for anti-vandalism and other anti-abuse purposes as someone known for anti-vandalism as mentioned in a Toronto Star article from October 2015 about myself linked at the top of the page. This privilege will not be abused. What is semi-private stays semi-private as I have no interest in making them public and all edits are publicly viewable. Hello there! You are invited to participate in the Destubathon of the Americas, a contest/editathon which will run from May 1 to May 31. The goal is to destub as many of our 475,000+ stubs for the Americas (from Alaska down to Chile) as possible. A good chance to have fun in expanding many of our old stale stubs and win up to £2000 ($2680) in Amazon vouchers for expanding stub articles. Sign up in the Contestants/participants section on the contest page if interested. Even if not interested in prizes you are still warmly welcome to participate in it as an editathon! Hopefully we can achieve something significant in the month of May together! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:15, 22 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Administrator elections candidacy

Hi Johnny! I see that you added yourself to the list of candidates for the May 2026 election, but haven't submitted your candidate page yet. I presume you are still working on it? Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 03:05, 30 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Adminship

edit

I see you put yourself forward to be an admin. I have always wondered why you weren't originally one. I shall support you in this endeavour. Let me know if I can be of any assistance. Canterbury Tail talk 19:36, 3 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thank you so much! Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:29, 4 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Canterbury Tail: I decided to withdraw from the candidacy as I felt I wasn't ready yet and I admitted to using LLMs to craft my responses. I will promise not to use LLMs for my responses for the October 2026 election. I have also updated the advice for admin candidates page regarding LLM use. I am open to having you coach me on how to improve my chances at being admin. Thanks. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 23:41, 11 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Please don't participate in the October 2026 election if you needed Special:Diff/1353555742 to not do that in the same year. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 09:20, 13 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
(I mean, I'm perhaps more biased than average against AI in Wikipedia discussions, but the way this ended, with someone pointing it out and you noticing that in the moment it became public, it was such an issue that you had to withdraw before even answering the question about it, you should not only have known better, you apparently did. And in a community where sockpuppetry is perceived as a significant sin even in cases that could have been justifiable somehow, this feels worse than noticing that a candidate had an undisclosed second account that edit warred together with the main account a year ago. This isn't, in my personal mind, something you can just throw away as a failed attempt for re-trying in the same year. It's on the level of "why are you not blocked" in my perception.) ~ ToBeFree (talk) 10:03, 13 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
I must apologize. Using AI to write up the candidacy is akin to having someone else ghostwriting my candidacy page. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 17:06, 13 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

May 2026 Administrator Elections – Candidate Instructions

edit

Thank you for choosing to run in the May 2026 administrator elections. This bulletin contains some important information about the next stages of the election process.

As a reminder, the schedule of the election is:

  • May 6–7: Housekeeping phase (we are here)
  • May 8–12: Discussion phase
  • May 13–19: SecurePoll voting phase
  • Scrutineering phase

All times are in UTC. The first date in the range starts at 00:00, and the last date in the range ends at 23:59. So for example, the Discussion phase opens on 8 May 2026 at 00:00 UTC, and ends on 12 May 2026 at 23:59 UTC.

We are currently in the Housekeeping phase. Your candidate subpage will remain closed to questions and discussion. However, this is an excellent opportunity for you to recruit nominators (if you want them) and have them place their nomination statements, and a good time for you to answer the standard three questions, if you have not done so already. We recommend you spend this phase getting your candidate page polished and ready for the next phase.

The discussion phase will take place from May 8–12. Your candidate subpage will open to the public and they will be permitted to discuss you and ask you formal questions, in the same style as a request for adminship (RfA). You are strongly encouraged to be around on those dates to answer the formal questions in a timely manner.

On 13 May, we will start the voting phase. The candidate subpages will close to public questions and discussion, and everyone will have a week to use the SecurePoll software to vote, which uses a secret ballot. Anyone can see who has voted, but not who they voted for. You are permitted and encouraged to vote in the election, including voting for yourself. Please note that the vote totals cannot be made public until after voting has ended and as such, it will not be possible for you to see your vote total during the election.

Once voting concludes, we will begin the scrutineering phase, which does not have an exact end date, but typically takes a few days to a week. Once everything is certified, the results will be posted on the results page (you may want to watchlist this page) and transcluded to the main election page. In order to be granted adminship, you must receive at least 70% support, calculated as support ÷ (support + oppose), and must also have received a minimum of 20 support votes. Because this is a vote and not a consensus, there are no bureaucrat discussions ("'crat chats").

Any questions or issues can be asked on the election talk page. Thank you for your participation as a candidate, and best of luck.

Chaotic Enby (talk · contribs) 00:01, 6 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Withdrew rom candidacy. I will return for the October 2026 election and I will not use LLMs in the candidacy page for that election per WP:NOLLM. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 05:41, 11 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Update: I will not return for the October 2026 election actually. I will need much more time as I found out that I would be a borderline candidate if I were to apply in October than later. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:16, 14 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks and good luck!

edit

I was surprised to see you had withdrawn when I went to vote at AELECT just now, though the explanation above makes sense. Appreciate you running, and I hope it doesn't slow your editing streak or excellent anti-vandalism work. Take care, Rjjiii (talk) 03:01, 13 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I needed more time and had a lapse in judgement. I will return next year and will use the AI writeup from the previous election as an example of what not to do for next year, given WP:LLM. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:15, 14 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yes, having AI chatbots write my nomination implies outsourcing my judgement to AI. Wikipedia admins should use their own judgement and I should use my own judgement too if I wanted to be an admin. After all, chatbots are themselves not admins. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 23:59, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

Splitting discussion for Canada's Wonderland

List of Canada's Wonderland attractions already exists. It can be updated. Yes, even featured lists can be updated and should be updated to ensure they stay featured. Just a friendly heads-up. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 14:01, 3 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
