Following up from Wikipedia:Requests for comment/2024 Wikipedia blackout

Moving this here because I don't want to have irrelevant discussion on the RfC page.

LilianaUwU, I wasn't aware you were the one being harassed, and I'm very sorry to hear that. I'm still confused as to why the WMF would have needed to get involved though. I got the impression from your previous comment that extended protection worked? (If not, it's my position that the community should have stronger tools, because I'd prefer to not have to defer to the WMF for any matters not related to legal/hosting. I don't tend to trust corporate entities.)

I hope you understand that I'm just asking a question about policy. As a trans person myself I'm staunchly opposed to anything remotely resembling transphobic harassment. /home/gracen/ (yell at me here) 03:55, 15 November 2024 (UTC)

Well, it did work, but there's still random stragglers. This is mostly a concern about LTAs as a whole, and I feel like there aren't enough resources within the community to deal with them... speaking of, that topic is being discussed on AN right now. LilianaUwU (talk / contributions) 04:04, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
I should probably make more edits before I get involved in any AN discussions, but I would completely agree that if extended protection is the only/best option to stop LTA, we need better moderation tools. I'll keep myself posted on this and further discussions. I didn't decide to be an editor just to fix copy :3

Thanks!

1) Thanks for telling me about the Pronouns userboxes, 2) I used your user page to learn a bit more about formatting my page! It is now much more appealing and not so cluttered. Shovel Shenanigans (talk) 22:09, 23 November 2024 (UTC)

@Cooldudeseven7: Thanks for the invitation, but that's one of the first things I did when I decided to start editing Wikipedia! As for my distro, I use Arch, by the way :) /home/gracen/ (they/them) 15:16, 18 December 2024 (UTC)

Help requested: logged in but still rangeblocked

Hello! I've been taking a long wikibreak due to school taking up my time, but I was hoping to return to editing. After logging in today, I found that my IP had been blocked. This is not surprising, considering I'm on a school network right now, but I was under the assumption that these blocks only applied to anonymous users. Is there any way I can get around this so I can edit at school? I don't want to file a formal unblock request yet as I'm not sure I would do it correctly for this specific circumstance. Thanks, Gracen (they/them) 16:20, 5 May 2026 (UTC)

Many schools route their internet traffic through their own VPNs so those IP addresses will be blocked. An unblock request may help, or you could try using a phone hotspot or something like that to not use the school's internet. NumbersGhost (talk) 16:35, 5 May 2026 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice! I would just use the thanks feature, but apparently that doesn't work when you're blocked Gracen (they/them) 16:42, 5 May 2026 (UTC)
@ScottishFinnishRadish: Can you confirm that the block I'm subject to (50.203.38.0/24; when I was last connected to school WiFi I was 50.203.38.116) is actually blocking an open proxy? It's certainly a proxy, as I'm nowhere near Wallingford, but I'm not sure it's publicly accessible. Thanks! Gracen (they/them) 16:53, 5 May 2026 (UTC)
The block is for colocation/webhost and the range is owned and managed by Full Duplex Inc. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 17:02, 5 May 2026 (UTC)
